Even more strangely, the 360 is made to be used with both SD and HD televisions. This means there is a reasonable expectation that people would be using their 360 with an SD TV.

Bioware has not said that it is an SD vs HD issue. The Xbox 360 supports SD, so there's no reason an Xbox 360 game should not be properly viewable on an SDTV.

The text was perfect for me in ME1. Why change?

Tried to summarize the last posts. Even I don't know why :D

I, too, have to get up from the chair and go near the screen everytime i have to read something. I have an RGB Advanced Scart cable (the official Microsoft one) and I'm very careful with the settings of my consoles and my TV.  I'm a gamer from the 16-bit era, I think I know how to set a TV, what cable to use, how to set my console.

Still, the text is painfully small. That's the problem. I can read it if I play very near to the TV, but i don't want to destroy my eyes just for this game.

They should use a bigger text. I'll be happy. You'll be happy. HDTV owners would see no difference, many of them are already happy and the rest (the ones who have the same "small text issue") will be happy too.
Everyone is happy, everyone plays with the game they've payed.

Is this so difficult?

If Bioware wanted to get some sweet funding from Microsoft, they could probably agree to use Natal to make it so that you can interact with the codex entries like the Illusive Man does with his layout. :-)

It wouldn't make me buy Natal, but it represents a better use of the technology than anything MS has promoted so far.

Why buy a game that you know is made for a HD TV? I have a 42inch Sharp 720 and the game is beautiful and the text is just fine. HDTVs are very inexpensive these days. Skip buying a $60 game a month habit for 6 months, save that money and you can afford a very nice set for gaming.

Oh yeah, one more thing. If you are playing this game on a SDTV then you are really missing out. I've seen this gaem on both and it's night and day.  Once you play this game on a HDTV you will cry if you had to play it again on a SDTV. But complaining about the text being too small on your SDTV is like complaning about the graphics not being great on a SDTV. That's a you issue. If you want to play next gen, get with it. If not, get a Wii and your tv will be just fine.

Text is too small compared to a lot of other games. As ME2 is a game with a lot of codex to read (what i think is really great!!!), it's really hard to read.

Pls fix this. (i know it's not possible to fix it anymore)... so pls fix it for ME3

ps: In ME1 it was perfect.

Again, this is no HD vs. SD war.

The simple fact is that the text is too small. In ME1 was perfectly readable (planet description was already small, but still readable), they've changed it in ME2 for no reason at all.

You can read it? Good for you. You have a 42'' Sharp? Again, good for you.

But Xbox 360 support SDTVs, too, and there's no warning on the game cover that it would be unreadable on SDTVs. Look at Halo 3/ODST, or Ninja Gaiden, or Bioshock (just writing the ones I have here near me), they're all perfectly playable and readable on SDTV, and they still look beautiful if I can say it.

No one here is arguing about graphics, of course. But being able to read a menu... am I asking too much??

Is this that difficult to understand?

Everyone,

I would like to apologize. I was rude and unseemly in my last post. I may have been tired, but that is no excuse.

Though I may not stand by the execution of the post, I still stand by its meaning.

This is a real problem for me, on both of my televisions, no matter how much messing with settings I have done. That's why I posted here. This is why I keep posting here (squeaky wheels and all that). I am having a problem that is really impacting my enjoyment and playability of the game.

If anyone who has this problem is able to fix it on their televisions by changing their settings, please post what you changed. It may help someone, which is why this forum is here. As I stated earlier, changing the xbox setting to widescreen, even though my television is not a widescreen, did help a bit, but not much. If you are not having a problem, I am happy for you, though I am confused as to why you would post. Oh well. So it goes...

I again apologize for my rudeness. The best and the worst thing about the tubes is that it allows people to behave however they feel like, which is far too often in ways they never would in public, and I succumbed to that.

Not sure how many posts are here regarding the poor choice in text size but I can tell you that it is too many. I have a 55" 1080p and I can't read the text unless I sit so close that I have to pan my head to see the whole screen, about 5 feet. Bioware, I love all of your games but I need to be able to read the in game text!!

I've gotten a number of PMs about this. Messaging me more will not speed up the process. We are looking at the threads, but unless we necessarily have traction on it - we can't post information we dont have.

I'll have to talk to Casey about this (as any way to address it would have far reaching changes in the game), but please don't expect any decisions or a fix in the near future (as we are supporting a number of issues at this time). This was a design choice, not a bug.

Having said that, when I find out more, I will update this thread. I appreciate everyones patience. You guys are awesome.

While I realize you asked if there was any new word, please re-read what was already said about it. (Bolded & underlined certain parts for emphasis). It has only been four days since we've heard from Bioware/EA. You're just going to have to keep checking back over time. It could be days, it could be weeks, and it could be months. Sadly, what you do while waiting, and how long you are going to wait is up to you.

Some are putting the game away, others are selling it. Others still are going to suffer through and squint to th end. Then, there are those who are biting the bullet and getting HD-TVs. (I only reccomend this if you have the means to do so and are willing to upgrade for not just only this game, but all HD Content as well.)

Keeping the post on the main page helps keep it visible though (pun intended), and lets everyone else having the problem see they are not alone.

I have a 40" Sony Bravia Full HD LCD and the small texts are still annoying. This is not an issue exclusive to SDTV owners.

It has to do with game devs sitting right on front of their monitors while designing a game failing to acknowledge that most of us console gamers are not sitting in front of a monitor.

for people saying to upgrade SD TVs and such well i dont know your consuming habbits but for me a perfectly fine working  27" Sony Trinitron Wega with SRS and BBE that was bought 2-3 years ago dont need to be tossed aside or upgraded , when i bought it HD TVs were really expensive and i still payed 500$ for that thing , even if i have all the colors ports on the back of the tv (blue, green, whites, reds etc) i still cant make my xbox to work in HDTV and yes the text is too small , a fix would be nice

Great, now i'm hearing that even HD TVs won't guarantee a decent game experience. Bioware, what were you thinking??? Deliberately designing a good game with a major persistent flaw damages your reputation and good faith with customers than designing a bad game. Now everyone knows about the problem and interprets the lack of response as "We don't care".

Agreed.

And Madapaca, I didn't ask for you to quote that, just curious if there was any "NEW" news about this, as it's a fairly important problem. This isn't a sdtv vs. hdtv debate either.

DeeLite808, you are naieve to assume it wasn't caught during development. More likely than not, they were aware and made the choice to go with the way the game is now.

As for you not caring about it having been only four days, all I can say is you're the reason I hope it takes them months to even get to this request. They said to you not to expect any thing in the near future, yet you obviously are choosing to ignore that fact while pouting and not watching your temper.

Kelrek, you obviously didn't read what I wrote. I said I understood you were asking for 'NEW" news, and that is why I asked you to re-read what they posted. When someone tells you not to expect anything in the near future, that means longer than four days, weeks, or even months.

They could at least tell us WHY they've used a font so thin and so little, since "it was a design choice, not a bug".

They've done it on purpose, and that's a bad thing.

I'll never buy any more Bioware or EA games on day-one thanks to that. No way I'll put more than 30 euros for a new Bioware/EA game. I'll wait at least months or even years, like I already do with a lot of games. I still have to buy the first Assassin's Creed, I'll do the same with Mass Effect and all EA games from now on.

Again, thank you very much for your wise "design choice", Bioware. Thank you for your explanation, thank you for the patch, thank you for the consideration. You guys are awesome <_<

There is a good question! "Why was this small text a design choice?" Epic fail!!!!!! Now we can argue with each other all day long and point fingers at other peoples questions and opinions or we could simply raise the decibels til Bioware can't hear anything else.

And to Michael Gamble I appreciate the fact that you guys and gals at Bioware have many other issues to deal with and are working to fix them but this issue is affecting everyone (unless they are fortunate enough to have a 80" super expensive TV).

As I stated before I am big supporter of Bioware games as is everyone else in this thread or we just would not care and sold the game already. I want to continue enjoying the epic sci fi story of mass effect. I just don't want to get neck and eye strain in the process. I will be upgrading my computer video card so I can at least enjoy it on my computer monitor and be able to see the whole screen at the same time.

Love the game, love boiware, HATE the text.

exactly. I for one understand it will be a at least a few weeks, more likely months before patch is made to fix this issue,(if at all) but at this point what we are asking for is infomation. infomation that they should have. My only question is why? Why did they choose this? what was their reasoning. if it was a "design choice" then why don't they explain their choice?

"This was a design choice, not a bug."

What is this bull****? Seriously, Bioware? The text in ME1 was borderline. The text in ME2 is criminal. I should not have to sit two feet from my TV while squinting just to read my conversation choices. Nor should I have to deal with the fact that even that isn't enough when the wheel is over something white. Come ON. My enjoyment of this game is greatly diminished by the fact that I can't read a damn thing. Thank you, Bioware. THANK. YOU.

Rant done. While I know that it won't be fixed immediately, it should be high up on their list to do. Tiny text affects everybody, while fail redemption codes and dlc issues only affect some. Thanks for making me regret buying this so soon. Should have done what I usually do and wait until the price goes down and most of the more crippling bugs are patched. But no, I wanted super special awesome sci-fi action fun. >(

*Sigh* I waited a week for this game. And now I can hardly read it... I lived on ME1 for the week...maybe I'll just run through it and get a Renegade toon up in the levels. Then run ME2 all of spring break while I have access to a high def TV. I did the widescreen trick and it makes the text...sufferable at least, so I might be able to play this run without losing my vision.

to be fair some people are fine with the size of the text, so it's not everyone.

although if this thread is any indication, alot of people have a problem with it.
