To those thinking that by spending money on an HDTV will fix the problem, it won't. I am playing on a large HDTV and while the game looks great, the text is still too small to be readable, the text is nice and crisp mind you, but still too small. Just throwing that out there so people don't go throwing the grocery money at an HDTV only to be disappointed again.

Yeah I hate that crap. I have an HDTV and when I visit my gf on the weekends I have to use her SDTV. The text is so ridiculously small. I seriously think it is just a ploy to get ppl to buy more HDTVs.

Ditto with everyone else.

Bought the game today. Overjoyed when I put it in my 360 then felt like crying when I realised I couldn't play the game at all.

This is a MASSIVE flaw Bioware!

You guys are absolutely great, so please fix this quick so I can start playing!

I have the same issue, text UNREADABLE on my 32" SD TV.

Te text is too tiny, and many times th background color just make things worse.
I'm really disappointed with the poor threatment that Bioware reserved to us SDTV owners, especially since Mass Effect 1 was readable on standard TVs.

MASS EFFECT 2 REALLY NEEDS A PATCH FOR SDTV TEXT, as this I can't play the game and I'm thinking to sell it if Bioware will not fix this.
Next time think to ALL customers or just write on the cover "text unreadable on SDTV" so people without HDTV will not waste their money.

But since now we are here and our money is gone, correct this CRITICAL ISSUE as soon as you can, is the least you can do Bioware.

Thank you

I can only play on our huge family tv. I have a standard tv in my room that has only been played on once because I can't read anything. It's ridiculous. Fix this please.

I knew it!

What's the point in making texts so small?! I'm talking about other games too, not just ME2 (Star Ocean, Ninja Blade, Infinite Undiscovery, Dead Space...). What's the point? Please tell me, I just can't understand.

Add my name to the list of people who are extremely frustrated with this issue. I absolutely loved ME1 and pre-ordered the Collector's Edition of ME2. I brought it home today and felt like a kid on Christmas as I unboxed all the goodies and basked in their MassEffectyness. Imagine my surprise and disappointment when popped the disc into my 360 and realized that the majority of the game's text was too small to read. It's like my Christmas was canceled.

BioWare, I am a huge fan of what you do. I think that the stories you tell and the way you tell them are helping shape the next generation of narrative-based games. That's why I have such a hard time believing that a company so well known for quality would ship a game with such a fundamental flaw. I don't think that legible text on a 36" SD TV is too much to ask.

Please make this right. I want to play your game badly. In fact, I can't think of a game that I've looked forward to this much. Ever. And I've been a gamer since the Atari 2600. Sadly, this text issue renders the game unplayable for me.

I'm going to shelve the game for now and play something else, with the highest hope that a fix is coming soon.

I'm with this guy.
I, too, have buyed the game yesterday (in Europe it comes out today, but they have broken the day-one:O) with my collector's edition and all.

Seriously:

1) You (Bioware devs) have responded to our complains, and that's good. Thank you for that.

2) You must fix it ASAP! No way you're saying "don't expect anything in the near future", because we-can't-play. That's a major issue! A critical one.
I have payed 60 bucks for the game like everyone else, but we're left wandering and maybe.... maybe... in a distant future we'll be able to enjoy what we've payed for.
You must be kidding.
I want a patch ASAP or my money back from Bioware/EA. I'm good with either.

Came here to post this.
This is critical, not some "hmm yeah we're aware" issue.

Also, how on earth is this a design choice???  One of the most terrible decisions I've seen regarding a game in a looong time.

Thanks for the quote

Yeah, a terrible decision indeed. I think that they didn't even think about sdtv owners, but I could be wrong.

But... a design choice?

It's like if Ubisoft about Far Cry 2 would have said "save game bugs? Oh, them! It's a choice! To let you play more and more!"
Please.

I'm not quite going to go so far as to call it "unplayable" but gawd yes....this is frustrating. Glad I'm not the last person on Earth playing on a SDTV....

This is my biggest problem too. DAO and ME2 all have ridiculously small text on my HDTV. I can't afford to upgrade the tvs in my home right now. The codex entries and logs that pop up in the boxes on the right of the screen are light text on light backgrounds. I can sit with my nose pressed against the tv and still not read them. I missed instructions on the mini games because again they were too small to read. If the text was as big as ME1 then there would be no problems. please bioware fix this for your adoring rabid fans. :)

Glad BioWare is aware of this.

But I do question the design choice. Was there really complaints about how big the text size was in past games?

I find the design choice logic difficult to swallow as well. What makes something a defect is whether it works as intended, if it doesn't, it's a defect. Saying it was a design choice makes it sound as though Bioware intended for people to not be able to read the text. Saying it is a design choice also sounds like Bioware doesn't think this is an issue despite that this is has been one of most popular threads concerning issues with ME2 (and yes, I realize I have been helping the post numbers by being on here so much, but this is really bugging me and I want it addressed). Despite this having garnered so much interest, it took people sending messages to Bioware to get a response, and that response was that having unreadable text was a design choice. I would say that anything that affects the user interface so severely is a big issue as the UI is what people use to play the game, especially a game that is so very text heavy. The fact that it has taken so much to get a response and that response amounts to that this was a design and choice and may or may not be fixed is disappointing and dismaying.

Of course i agree Disassemble in everything he says.

I was thinking... the Bioware Dev posted here because of the MPs he received.

NICE! Let's bother them to death!!

I'm joking (am I?) but I agree this makes no sense at all. The more I think of it, the more I can't find just ONE reason to put an UI so unreradable.*

I've just tried the first ME again to see the difference. I think I'm going to cry.

Thanks again, bioware. You just lost a DAO buyer, now that I know it suffers for the same issue. You guys are geniouses.

*unless they want all users to buy a new TV just to play with a console. Mission accomplished, then.<_<
Never gonna buy Bioware games again, that's for sure.

While I still believe in BioWare (that may be because I live in Edmonton mind you) and that they care about a top grade product for their fans, the design choice comment isn't sitting well for me. When I create apps for businesses the first thing I have to consider is how will it look and various machines, and will people be able to read it.

Maybe they could tell us how this design choice was the better option, because the word choice mean they had to make a decision. So why was the small text chosen? Performance? Space? I mean if they are willing to tell us it was a design choice, maybe they could tell us why small text won out.

It severely hurts my eyes trying to read whatever is written.

Perhaps this game is optimized for 120 inch screens and most people don't have that.

I was planning on picking up DAO this weekend but from reading the comments that the text is about the same size as in ME2, I will withdraw from that decision.

While I agree completely with what everyone is saying about the "design choice" issue, the above in particular, he might have meant that it was their intention to make the text small as to be less intrusive to the imagery. I've noticed that a lot of games over the years have been shifting their focus from providing quality storylines/characters/gameplay to providing prettier graphics with less substance. And I'm not just talking about lately, but for the past several leaps in computing/console technology.

Bioware, among a handful of other companies, have been resisting this change in the competitive market, prefering to place focus on story first, then character dynamics, gameplay, and then finally graphical considerations. I'm not saying their stuff looked bad, which it looked fabulous, just saying it wasn't the primary or even secondary focus of the games they produced. It just may be, as these "design choice" suggests, that their focus has shifted. But I can't say for sure, seeing as how I am completely unable to play ME2.

DA:O was good, though, and the text wasn't near as small, and was easy to read. Story was great, characters well-developed, and the graphics, while not the best, worked well, tying everything together. I totally wouldn't have minded if they did an almost kind of copy-paste thing and made ME2 from that engine, turning into DA:O in space. At least I would have been able to read it and understand what was going on.

Yeah I actually got that one for Christmas and returned it (put the $$$ down on pre-order ME2).  The text is way too small there as well.  I had absolutely no idea how to strategize or use the sh*t I got.  I never really felt like I was getting it.
Plus the game itself just isn't my thing.  I loved Fable II, but DAO was just... felt sorta unpolished and small (really? The Dalish army that will back you up is a camp the size of my backyard?)

I don't believe the text in DAO is as small. I didn't have nearly as much trouble playing it.

Also most of the smallest text in ME2 is in the codex and mission complete screens etc. I think the dialogue wheel is a little bigger, so the text interferes with graphics arguement doesn't really work.

Agreed. its a BAD design choice. This isn't the year 2020 .  People still own set top tv sets that are analog, not HDTV and unless a 52-60" HDTV 1080p set goes on sale for less than $300 , I wont be picking up a set till well into the future.

I jsut got the game today. Im peed off because I've waited 2 years, played ME 1 with over 100 hours of game play and was hoping that I could play this game without hurting myself.

I guess that is not an option now, huh?
