But why????

Your genes are more succesful if you make 2 children than if you make one. Its even better if you get your genes to spread with different women.

Now, anyone who justifies his cheating behaviour by mentioning this is a royal *bleep* who should be punched repeatedly in the face, or anywhere else you want.

I'm not justifying the behaviour, I'm explaining it. And we can rise above it, as we've done with other things (like the normal, ancestral response to kill any stranger you weren't in someway related to)

Oh... I didn't know that. That's very interesting actually and yeah of course it doesn't justify cheating, I would kill him if he tried to pull that one on me haha but it's an interesting fact.

Thanks for explaining it to me.

You only have that luxury because you live in a society that wouldn't be on the verge of collapse if a few men and women refuse to have children.

For most of human history such a mindset simply wasn't an option (and you wouldn't even begin to feel like it)

my history knowledge might not be that good but i dont remember society ever being "on the verge of collapse", especially not because of a lack of children

Going to the Liberty Science Center on a Saturday was a lesson on why the family experience can suck. The place is packed with families, and I noticed they make the place dirty and chaotic.

You would lose that bet. Just about everyone said that up to about fifty years ago. It's in almost every religious text of every major religion. Pres. Teddy Roosevelt was on record for being in favour of large families. And on and on.

Even if that were true, I fail to see the point you're trying to make. Are you trying to argue that a few hundred thousands years ago, or hell, even 10 thousand years ago there were men and women who refused to have children? Seriously?

And it isn't true. It's like you never heard of the bible or something, lol.

The advantage of having children well into the Industrial Revolution was that they were your retirement plan. Especially on a farm, more labourers meant that more of the harvest stayed with the family and then the children would support their parents in their old age. More children meant that the hurden would be spread around and increase the odds of one of the children making good.

A childless couple in such a situation was doomed to a shorter, less comfortable life.

Sure. Lets ignore a few hundred thousand years of history so you can feel good about not wanting children. Lol.

Which you can feel good about regardless, we live in towns and cities with millions of inhabitants. You not wanting children, or even millions of people not wanting children really isn't going to matter.

Yes, lets ignore evolution and DNA and everything too while we're at it. Already ignoring a few hundred thousand years of history, what's it matter?

World populations increased because of better medical practices that reached poorer populations. Before, rural societies tend toward creating large families, but children died due to poor prenatal care, malnutrition, disease, etc. Even when infant mortality rates lowered, rural families still kept the practice of having large families because they were generally uneducated and had little access to contraception or refused it due to cultural/religious practices.

im not ignoring evolution, im ignoring "spreading your genes" as a reason to have children, i mean other than being a ego boost whats the point?

For the love of G...

I'm speaking of the underlying biological reasons. It's why I stressed quite a few times that it was not a justification for the behaviours I was explaining.

And the fundamental biological reasons for having children are to propagate your genes into the next generation.

They're smart.

In this day and time. 50.000 years ago that would be a bad idea.
