I didn't get into Mass Effect at first, one of my best friends made me play Eden Prime on 360- at that time I had no hand-eye-controller coordination and nothing took, and when I got a PC copy, I had nothing that could really play it. Years later, I was testing out my new laptop, fired up the game and I was hooked, bought the second game while pre-ordering the third and desperately playing Mass Effect 2 before the third game came out.
It takes playing past Eden Prime. I think I was past the point of no return once I got to Therum. Nowadays, I love the start of the first game but it wasn't what got me invested originally. That was the sense I was in this massive universe and the immersion factor which kicks in.
