The characters and interactions. Modded and otherwise.

ME was the only series to actually make me care about virtual characters. I mean, my first play though, when Ashley killed Wrex.. i was furious. For days! And after many play-throughs, I still leave her on the planet every time. The death of various characters, having to choose (until I learned how to play a perfect game) who lives and dies - it all hit me. Hard.

After 8 play-thoughs I'm sort of done. I was hoping DAI (DAO did but DAI failed terribly) would fill the void. But no.

Anyone know another game where the characters make up so much of the experience? I need something to ******  over with me officemates.

Witcher and Witcher 2, while you cant really customise the main char, you can still choose what he does and what he says. Plus they are actually really good games.

And I know what you mean, the first time I got back to Normandy after Virmire, seeing that empty place where Kaidan was... even after 7 years I still remember how sad it felt. Or the triumph at the end of the game.

ME1 had a lot of scenes like that for me.  Kaidan's station empty, talking to Kaidan and Ash on the Citadel leaning over the railing, fighting on the Citadel with Sovereign in the background, talking to Vigil and seeing Ilos....

ME1 had a lot of those moments, and it set the bar pretty high for ME2 and 3.

Might want to give Alpha Protocol a bash.  It's a bit like if ME was a pulpy spy movie but the characters are pretty great.

Yeah, and seeing two suns. one red and one blue for the first time when exploring. Or a dozen different moments. ME2 still had them but ME1 was just the first.

Yeah, you can say what you like about the ME3 ending, but I thought the character interactions in the last game of the trilogy were just superb. The characters had just developed so much personality and connection to you over the 3 games and there was so much raw emotion in the last one. Unfortunately I don't think there is any other game that gets close to matching ME1-3 for character interaction, there has certainly never been an entire cast I cared for so much. There are one or two characters in DAO and DA2 but doesn't have the same amount or depth of character content.

I miss the days of ME1. ME2 was okay, but it's sad to look back and remember how hopeful and eager I was for 3, how I thought it'd be the best thing ever. Counted down the days until its release, and then... Well, you know how it was.

True but the characters that we feel most deeply about are those we have seen in at least 2 games, and Mordin, Grunt, Kasumi, Zaeed, were all great just from ME2, all in all considering how many squaddies we had in ME2 we did have more interaction with them. But ME3 has the Citadel dlc, and for that I have forgiven them for nearly everything.

Eight play-through's? Please... I am aiming for fifteen. I love them all. I replay one and two most of the time. I do play the third one, just not as much as the first two.

It is understandable that you would feel something for them. Most of us do. They are as close to self-aware as you can get. The only thing missing is that approval system from Dragon Age. They all have their own emotions, they all face the possibility of death, they all can be abused and hurt. I can already remember a few examples while I type this: watching Miranda cry when you breakup with her, arguing with Ashley in the hospital. Anyway, the first of the next three should be available in 2016.

Plus the first three might be re-released on next gen with updated graphics, patches, and other stuff. Nothing but win.

I dont even know how many playthroughs I have had, I stopped counting. I think ME3 has the least, only 3 so far.

I would've enjoyed those much more if I felt immersed in my Shepard which I didn't, and I started getting pissed everytime I talked to someone and the conversation wasn't cinematic and Bioware still had the balls to let Shepard autodialogue out of cinematics on the Normandy.

IMO Mass Effect 2 takes the cake for best squadmate conversations. I know they don't move around or interact with each other. Whatever. All their dialogue was cinematic and interactive. That's what I buy the games for.

And DA:I in this regard was amazing, because even when dialogues weren't cinematic I'd still get tons of dialogue options and they still let the companions interact with one another from time to time.

I'll add my vote for Alpha Protocol. Great characters and veyr interesting way to branch the story.

Just keep in mind that it's a RPG, not a shooter, not a stealth game. Until you have the right stat or ability, don't try to do the kind of stuff you can pull in a call of duty or splinter cell, you will die.

Mass Effect 1 suffered from the same problem with all the people that bought the game thinking it would be a squad shooter.

I suggest giving a try to the 2013 Tomb Raider game. Also Spec Ops: The Line.

Tomb Raider is good, just play it with a controller, the damn quick time events are extremely awkward on pc with mouse and keyboard.

And I know exactly what you mean ZipZap, there really are not that many games which have all the ingredients of ME blended at least half as well.

Seconded (or perhaps thirded?) on Alpha Protocol.

If you don't mind point and click adventure games, i'd suggest some of Telltale's more recent titles:  The Walking Dead or A Wolf Among Us.

Also Planescape:  Torment is one of the most character-driven RPGs out there today.  It, along with Baldur's Gate 2, are held up as examples of such stories despite being fifteen years old.

One way that I found of filling the appetite for ME stuff and get back into game was reading humorous ME themed comics and art on deviantart, reading fanfics.

I feel like the deeper pepole read into it the more of them say Tomb Raider 2013 is a load of crap. I haven't played it, but I'd just say, I wouldn't purchase it for its storytelling based on what I have heard.

I suggest you play KOTOR or KOTOR 2 in case you haven't played any of those. Sure, they're old and your protagonist doesn't have a voice but trust me, I played KOTOR 2 for the first time last year and I got sucked right into it. It was deeply immersive and it has some of the best characters I have ever seen in a game.

I'm pretty sure that can be said about a lot of games, including Mass Effect. The story was engaging enough to keep me glued to a screen until the end and I looked forward to see what's next every day. There were very few games that have that effect on me. That counts for something in my book.

Tomb Raider's plot is hokey but well-paced, defined by Lara's interactions with her comrades. Good mix of climbing and combat mechanics, too. I liked it, but I do think it gets a little too much praise, since there really isn't much innovation there.

Same goes for Shadow of Mordor, sans the Nemesis mechanic.

Alpha Protocol and Fallout: New Vegas should both be at the top of a to-play list. Great cast of characters and choice variation in both, though the combat in AP makes Mass Effect's gameplay look good (stick to stealth).

It's not a terrible game though I did bail on it when I hit the ship graveyard section and got sick of the plot feeling strung along.

But it's not really a helpful choice as an ME substitute.  I mean I love the Devil May Cry games but I'd never have suggested them here as they're way outside the parameters at play.

Someone's suggestion of some of he Telltale games seems way more on the mark.  Damn The Wolf Among Us was good.

If you are not afraid of old games you might try The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. They might not be rpg's or action but damn the story is one of the best I have ever seen.

I don't think there is any game that can count as ME substitute. The trilogy is unique in you building attachment to the characters throughout three consecutive games. No other game features that kind of save import. Witcher comes close but it does not carry over nearly as much as Mass Effect does.

I suggested Tomb Raider because it was one of the few games (along with Mass Effect) that I was invested emotionally. I can't say the same for Fallout New Vegas or Skyrim, for example, despite playing them A LOT.
