After adding my voice to Alpha Protocol, I'll add another vote for the Deus Ex series (with an emphasis on Human Revolution As the charcter are more developped in this one) and The last of us. I wasn't expecting much and that game sucker punched me.
The telltales are also very good, less AAA, more intimist and contained, but finely crafted with attention to details. I enjoyed every hours I spent on Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead (with a preference for he zombie one even if I'm not a fan of the comics and the show). Since I'm not a fan of the episodic format I'll wait For Tales of Borderlands and Game of Thrones to be completed before trying them.
In defense of Tomb Raider, while the story isn't fantastic the scenery and it's integration into the level design is something to be seen. Some sequences could put a block buster to shame. So so story, top notch directing, great atmosphere, it was worth my time. For a better immersion i would recommend using the possibility to "dress" Lara to get rid of the tank top and have her sport the mountain gear, way more believable considering the climate.
Funny story (or ironic one) some friends of mine did lend me Tomb Raider, The Last of Us and the Telltale games just after I bought DAI. Today I have finished Tomb Raider, finished The Last of Us (and bought my own copy), finished the two seasons of Walking Dead and the Wolf Among Us and I still have a hard time continuing with DAI.
Streamlined for the better, in my opinion. Oblivion is a fine game but can be rather clunky and the skill leveling was boring and arbitrary (how many times do I need to jump off Cloud Ruler Temple to get my Acrobatics up?). But it goes well beyond the gameplay: the lore was rich, it was good, it was mostly consistent. The plot was simple, but there was relatively little ambiguity for ambiguity's sake.
As much as I love Oblivion, I do prefer Skyrim. I too think it was streamlined and not dumbed down. There was some serious flaws in Oblivion's RPG innards including the fact that you could torpedo your character if you didn't know how the leveling mechanics worked. Even with the skill simplification you still have 18 skill tree containing 251 perks, that's a lot more than many games today.
