Given the degree to which our dedicated character threads are currently crammed full of off-topic - thoroughly uninteresting - chatter, I thought I'd start a thread to consolidate the posting of all such shite for the benefit of those of us who would rather talk and read about the characters in question.

You're welcome.

I was once complained this, but you can jump in anytime and mention the characters themselves.. and things will get flowing. People will still welcome you.

Otherwise, take it easy.. have fun.

The chatter makes those threads impenetrable to me StreetMagic. In all seriousness, can people not limit the posting of off topic content to our dedicated off topic threads and sub-forums?

It's not so much that they're going off topic because they don't care. The dedicated threads are like little communities in themselves and people built up friendships in them. So there's a lot of banter.

So we should beat a dead horse that died foaming at the mouth, since all available theories are discussed to death or there no new info to add to said discussion?

Character threads appear more of fandom threads to me meaning fans of characters are there. There is often lot of on-topic talk as well though and if you want to discuss some point of the character, people usually are happy to do so.

Bring up what you want to talk about and you'll have people discuss it with you nine times out of ten. The off topic banter-y stuff usually come up when no one has had any interesting thoughts lately, and as other people have said, you tend to have regulars who hang out in the character threads and they'll continue to talk to each other til the next subject comes up.

And why is this an issue, exactly?

At least the people (regulars) on these threads are civil and respectful toward each other, unlike some of the ridiculous troll and flame threads I've seen, and admittedly, engaged in (especially the ones that turn into political debates under the guise of DA).

It's not harming anybody. Besides, as people above my post have already stated -- I'm sure if you make a post about a character, people will engage you and be very happy to talk about them with you.

You can always post a separate thread if you've got something real to discuss.

I'm looking for a Bailey's cupcake recipe for St. Pat's, so if you find one, please let me know. <3

It's an issue because it makes our dedicated character threads the personal property of small cliques who would rather use them as an IRC chat room than a place to talk about the game. Given that the BSN has 'Social Group' and 'Off-Topic' sub-forums, it's super-frustrating to see our dedicated character threads derailed so.

Why is that an issue exactly?

How are they cliques? Cliques implies they're unwelcoming of new members, and in all the boards I've visited, with one exception, that hasn't been the case.

No idea. I'm failing to see why it's important. ;)

Like the old saying goes, though... "Live and let live."

These character threads have been going on for ages.. people go in there, talk to like-minded individuals and have fun. As I stated earlier, there is no harm done.

You can go in there, and discuss the character you want.. as these people in their "cliques" have been fans for quite some time now, I'm sure they'd be happy to oblige in whatever questions or point of discussion you may have.

The problem is that after a while all the character threads will atrophy and eventually become dead threads if they aren't kept up by banter and other discussions.

It's been months since the game was released, there just aren't that many theories left to discuss, and as someone mentioned the character threads have really evolved into fandom threads. Groups of people who love that character and have become close because of the game.

But if you've got a theory or a comment about a character, simply pop into the thread, write your post and you'll get people talking to you about it.

It's your own issue if you're too nervous to post in a thread when off topic discussions are going on.

Seems like the OP is complaining for the sake of complaining and nothing more.

Again, the BSN has 'Social Group' and 'Off-Topic' sub-forums. Moreover, bumping character threads with off-topic chatter actually bumps active on-topic threads from 'Story, Campaign & Characters'. It's just super-inconsiderate is all.

It's always the people who aren't very friendly who complain about the threads not being very friendly. You ever tried being nice? Joining in? Gently guiding the thread in the direction of whatever you want to talk about?

Also, derailed? I'm sorry, but what is there possibly left to talk about? We are at a stand still. You want 20 dead threads so you're not bothered by off topic chatter?

Yeah I understand that but my point is.

Who cares!?

In the grand scheme of things... does it really matter?

If it bothers you so much that people want to discuss something other than what's "on-topic", don't go into the threads. Make a separate thread about a character, if you so badly want to discuss said character... Let people have their fun and talk peacefully. What are you.. the BSN tyrant?

It really doesn't warrant making a thread complaining about threads being off-topic... I cannot for the life of me, see why this matters.

Can somebody help me?

Again, its complaining for the sake of complaining. The OP was given plenty of options on how to approach the subject of a character, but choose to ignore these and continue to complain about the entire thing. If it was honestly a major issue it would have been corrected by mods months ago. Given the fact that each character thread is over 3k pages and all of them work the same way, it isn't a real issue. Also, as much as the OP is going to hate admitting this, NO ONE answers to him, period.

If you have nothing to discuss, why bump a dedicated character thread in a forum dedicated to 'Story, Campaign & Characters'? Why is that more friendly and reasonable than say moving your off-topic chatter to the relevant sub-forum? Serious question.

Because you'd lose a huge chunk of the core regulars group who talk in the character thread (it always happens whenever you move a group to a new environment) and the character thread would atrophy and people basically would stop talking about the character and all you'd have left would be newbies and a husk of a once magnificent thread.

I'm sorry but do you realise how trivial and petty this is?

If this was such an issue, every single character thread would have been locked down a hell of a long time ago.

If you feel intimidated by or fear the so-called "cliques" on said threads, then I genuinely feel sorry for you, mate.

Now I feel like I'm flogging a dead horse here, but I'll ask anyway, one last time:

Why does it matter?

If you want to talk about a particular character, go into whatever thread you want, and talk away. Who cares if people are "off topic"?

There's much more important things to worry about in life, don't you think?

Actually, I have a question for the OP.

I'm a regular of the Sera thread and we've often compared it to a tavern.

If the title of the thread were changed from being the Sera Discussion Thread to something like the... Sera's Tavern Thread - Come in and Chat About Sera and Other Pointless Topics would you be less irritated?
