Hi, this is just a list of a few ideas for some side quests which Mac tweeted about for the up coming mass effect 4. These are just outlines and don't go into any real depth.

* Have a side mission involving a rouge planet. Could have the rouge planet already in deep space with a lost civilization on it. Could also have a few survivors on that planet deep under ground close to the planets core so as to stay warm. Mission could involve detection of a signal and subsequent landing on the planet to investigate.

*Have an enemy, criminal or the like hide away on a comet to avoid detection in a particular star system. Maybe have smugglers put something on a comet to get it out of a system (or in) undetected or have a race use the comet as a platform to launch a sneak attack. Mission could involve landing on the comet and destroying/capturing what ever is on it.

*Rescuing of a crew from a damaged ship which is on the verge of being sucked into a black hole. Mission could involve an emergency repair or just a docking and evacuation of the crew.

*Have a star threaten to go super nova at some point during the game. A number of missions could stem from this such as  trying to convince particular races of the seriousness of the situation as they may think its just a ruse by some of the other races. Other mission could be that it really was a ruse by a particular race and once the other race starts to panic and lets their guard down they launch a sneak attack on them.

*A grey goo with rogue AI scenario involving robots (maybe geth) being created with 3d or maybe even 4d printing. Mission would obviously involve landing at the location and stopping it before the problem gets out of control.

*A mission involving first contact with a primitive civilisation. Could be a stone age civ or even one at a similar level of tech as we are today. This one may not need any shooting in it but instead have some interesting interactions with the alien race. You could maybe get a new squad mate here or they may even have something of use such as a tech or mineral not found any where else in the galaxy.

*Have a scenario involving the changing of the elements in a planets atmosphere. This could be done by one civ to another to try and cause a mass extinction via stealth so as to take the planet themselves. It could be 2 advanced civ's or an advanced civ doing it to a primitive civ with moral and ethical ideas stemming from this.

*Have a planet with a rare type of giant fauna on it. Have members of an alien race hunt these animals for sport or for medicine used in their own type of quackery. Mission could involve stopping the hunters (and avoid being killed yourself by these giant animals) as they have been protected by edict from the citadel council.

*Have an Event Horizon (the movie) like scenario with a ship long thought lost, returning out of the blue. Mission would involve investigation of the ghost ship.

* Visit a gas giant with a mining colony on it which hovers in a band between layers of different types of gases. Have flora and fauna in this band that never land but just fly and glide. If they get too low they are pushed back up by strong up drafts as their body structure which has evolved on this planet is specially designed for this.

* One of your squad mates betrays you. Mission could involve them leading you into an ambush on a planet. Or have them kidnap you on the citadel and then smuggle you off it. After which you need to escape which could involve breaking out of jail and hijacking a ship to get back to the citadel.

* Have a dozen or so "open case" scenarios which can be investigated at any time during the game. These are strange happenings in the galaxy which have never been resolved.

*While investigating one of these open cases you could land on a remote planet to find an old couple living there happily together all alone. You find out later in the game that they have been kidnapped or murdered and you have to find out why. Another idea could be a ship crashed on a remote planet many years ago and the people on board the ship gave up the hope of ever being rescued. They may have built a small habitat around the crashed ship or are living amongst the natives of the planet.

Anybody else got some ideas for side quests for the up coming game?

Nice ideas - especially the Event Horizon one - that would be freaky.

I like these how you can mix it up with having missions about diplomatic/hostile relationships to other species. Especially if you get to interact with different levels of the species that could be less or more advanced than what we're used to.

Good ideas. I really like the betrayal. Not all squadmates need to be completely friendly and loyal.

And I always love a good mystery.

Mac probably won't be writing any though. He's the director, not the writer.

I might be able to cook up a few thematic ideas as well:

- a side quest involving an abandoned space facility and the only one remaining is a person who has become a cyborg clone because of physical trauma that threatened his life, but because everyone was gone when he woke up he doesn't realize he's no longer organic.

- a quest involving an Ardat Yakshi who's in love but you need to make sure her relationship can work without sexual intercourse, or she will be killed if renegade or sent to an ardat yakshi monestary if you're paragon. Renegade intimidate ends the quest with her staying with her lover and possibly killing him/her and charm makes her realize the relationship can be maintained peacefully if she avoids sexual intercourse.

Creative director, his job is to ensure the look and feel of the game makes you think Mass Effect. The actual keys have been given to other people, part new, part from the ME3 MP staff (http://blog.bioware....xt-mass-effect/).

He has the same job as Mike Laidlaw, who is the Creative Director on Dragon Age. Pretty much, on the creative side of things, he has the final say. If Mac wants us to fight a big red blob at the end of the game, it'll happen.

Chris Schlerf writes the most emotionally satisfying death scene, Mac can now say "I think it needs more ninja swords, that would be cooler!"

Although this will be the ultimate test to prove or disprove my condemnations about Mac. I keep telling myself that out of Casey and Mac in ME3 it was Mac who screwed up the most in terms of decision-making in planning out the story and that Casey was mostly trying to downplay Mac's bad ideas by cutting them out... I'm just excited to see where Mac will go as Creative Dir. 's all!

I'm an optimist. I hope he ends up taking advantage of the job, and make something good.

But I'm also a realist. I'm not gonna pretend he doesn't have the power he has. I'm also the same realist that doesn't blame him for all the issues with ME3.

I just feel like, with every interview I've seen, Mac seems very singleminded and he also said something like "Some of the others were enthusiastic about the whole minutia -- I wasn't one of 'em... it's not my strength, I should say." (source: An interview from 09 at PAX) and yet here he stands at the top of everything and he has to keep "minutia" in check.

On the flipside I suppose being a director also allows you to see everything from a wider perspective and you're not forced to go into all the little finnicky details -- the writers, artists and programmers are and you're just supposed to guide and give thumbs up when the bigger picture seems to be in place.

I can't really make myself an expert on this but that would be my guess... so whether it is one way or the other means everything when we're talking about Mac being in that position.

I have no doubt Mac really loves Mass Effect, though, and I have no doubt his passion is only gonna make it "better" but in the past his approach was always kind of misguided I think: "Have the biggest moments, but make it mean something" -- (my comment ->) yeah, sure... but meaning or substance is more important than style and spectacle.

Hmmm, maybe leave Mac out of this discussion and just talk about ideas for the next ME.

Some cool ideas here but I find it difficult to get too much into this before we know the basics of the setting. If the game is in a different galaxy side missions will be very different than if it was set in the milky way rebuilding from the Reaper war. Set in the milky way allows you to do missions set in cities populated with known species and opens up all sorts political themes. In a different galaxy everything will have to be new and based on the unknown or colonial settings.

Some ideas either way...

Come across an unknown planet populated by pre-spaceflight civilisations at war. Must decide whether, and if so how, to get involved to stop one destroying the other.

An entire unexplored star system vanishes from sight or a massive solar explosion is witnessed. Get sent on a long journey to investigate what might have happened although because it is thousands of light years away, whatever happened happened thousands of years ago.

After investigating an alien planet/ship some of the crew were infected with a dangerous mutating disease and must be tracked down and destroyed or contained.

An exceedingly violent, warlike and destructive civilization is on the verge of developing ftl technology. Must decide how to deal with them and whether it is morally acceptable to sabotage their technology, destroy their resources or try to change their philosophy.

To setup a colony on a new garden world must explore the planet and tame the primitive but very large wildlife in a variety of ways
