Batarian, even if the notion of an Elcor squaddie might be hilariously fun in small doses.

I think the batarian would be the most likely, but now I got fond of the idea of a having a vorcha squadmate  Volus and Yahg also would be cool

I would not like a Keeper teammate. They'd make him talk and fully sentient and take away everything that sets the Keepers apart and makes them mysterious. Just like Legion. In itself a good character but he never made sense as a Geth.

I want a pet Vorcha

Also, a Batarian squadmate could be interesting.

An entirely new alien race would be preferable so i'd probably pick Raloi from that list but have reservations about introducing another reportedly Avian-type species when we already have the Turians who fill that role. A Batarian squadmate will happen eventually, I just hope they aren't a total cliche when it happens.

I wish the poll allowed multiple options. Batarian, vorcha and rachni would've been my picks :)

My sentiments exactly.

I think a batarian could be interesting. I don't really care about the yahg. A race that is both strong and smart and militaristic is a bit boring (IMO). Elcor, volus, vorcha and hanar were relegated to semi-joke races, I am not sure if I could take such a squadmate seriously...and we don't really know much about the other races.

Which is why we need to see those races in a serious light/companion role (IMO). Everyone of the species BioWare created for Mass Effect is extremely interesting and has lots of interesting and deep lore about them, but sadly all anyone can see when they look at these races is the "I am a Biotic God!" or "Blasto" memes.

As for my preferred companion out of that list of species, I would go with a Rachni; either a young queen, or a Brood Warrior/Scout with a greater degree of autonomy outside of the hive. Despite their monstrous appearance, the Rachni actually have some interesting things to say about the history of the galaxy, and they bring a unique perspective to the setting.

It would be cool to get a companion that offered a more 'alien' take on the galaxy; like ME 2 Legion; despite their alien appearance, companions like Garrus, Wrex or Mordin had very human personalities, and motivations. The Rachni's hive mentality would color how they view individuals, and I would wager that their song-like connection to their queen would color their dialogue in interesting ways.

A nice break from the human-centric companions could also come in the way that the Rachni could communicate to the PC through another species; like the Asari in ME 2. Instead of the narrative trying to 'fix' alien elements or customs to be more human, the Rachni's interaction with their 'spokesperson' and the player could show how things can be completely different from us and our customs, but not portrayed as evil.

Yeah people would stop making fun of the way the Elcor talk real quick once they realized that they can go toe to toe with a tank and win.

Also don't forget an Elcor's immense strength. Evolving on a planet with 5 times the Earth's gravity means that an Elcor can easily rip a man in half with its bare hands, or pull a Bane on a Krogan. B)

This is not a squad mate, but a character who helps you out in non combat situations.

This is a holographic sphere generated by the protagonist's omnitool.

The voice would be a cross between Stephen Merchant and Paul Bettany.

Please note that the scenario below is entirely the fault of the player character for making poor dialogue choices in negotiations.

[A warning triangle with an exclamation mark appears on the holographic sphere]

Protagonist: So what seems to be the problem?

Sphere: Oh dear. This is a most troubling situation.

Protagonist: Why? What's wrong.

Sphere: Well. We have an influx of Baterians in the left corridor and a group of angry vorcha in the left.

Protagonist: Well. I kinda messed up the negotiations a little. Sorry.

Sphere: Don't apologise to me. Apologise to them. I doubt they were pleased when you said "You look like a bunch of mercenaries."

Protagonist: Yeah. I clearly didn't think this through. To be fair they do look like mercenaries.

Sphere: Well. I'll try and slow them down by activating force fields. However I doubt it will slow them down for long.

[Some time later]

Protagonist: Thanks buddy. I owe you one.

Sphere: Just one?

Protagonist: I lost count after one.

Sphere: I lost count after thirty. I'd ask you for a beer, but as you can see, I don't drink.

Protagonist: Well. Surely there is some way I can repay you.

Sphere: How about next time, I handle the negotiations? Hah "mercenaries". You are a fool. A foolish fool.

Protagonist: Okay. Okay. I said I was sorry.

Sphere: And they say "sorry" is the hardest word. Pfft. Hardly.

[Later on the ship]

Sphere: I do hope you're not considering going back to The Citadel.

Protagonist: Why? Don't you like The Citadel?

Sphere: We always go The Citadel. Lets go some place new.

Protagonist: What do you have in mind?

Sphere: There is a lovely new space station in the Attican Traverse. Let's go there.

Protagonist: That space station is filled with Rachni.

Sphere: All the more reason to go there I say.

[Some time later]

Protagonist: How come you don't do much in combat?

Sphere: Because I'm not a combat drone.

Protagonist: Well I suppose you could be more helpful.

Sphere: Would you prefer it if I yelled "Hey Listen!", "Watch Out!" repeatedly?

Protagonist: No. That would get tiring and annoying.

Sphere: You see. I like to think of myself as the brains and you as the brawn. You handle the grisly combat and I'll handle everything else.

If the hanar is a biotic that equips their guns with telekinesis that would be awesome!

I think a Volus could be interesting as well.

People tend to think of them as weak, but people also said the same about the Salarians before we got Mordin as a squadmate. It is interesting how one companion character can change perceptions of an entire faction.

So much for that poll.

Since the last time I updated the results, the Volus jumped from 9 votes to 40. In that same time frame the Batarians only gained 4 votes, the Rachi 1, and the Hanar 1. Out of a a total of 37 votes cast since the last update, the Volus received 31 votes...83.7% of the total votes during that period.

Someone was voting multiple times for the Volus. Barla Von, maybe?

None of the above please lol; A list of joke, and one dimensional villain fodder races.. I'd rather have squadmates from 1 or both of the new races being designed for NME. In addition to Turian and Asari of course.

I would have to disagree.

All the races in the setting have a great deal of nuance and depth, it's just that most of them are underutilized. Also, adding new species to the setting just because we want to have more aliens is the wrong way to go about it (IMO). I would want Mass Effect to not go the Star Trek route and have hundreds of alien species; the great majority of which have less than three sentences worth of backstory and general lore; or aliens that are introduced for one episode and then immediately forgotten about.

There are only so many troupes and concepts to go around before we start having an overlap; New Species X being nothing more than a re-skinned Krogan, or Quarian, for example. I prefer that we explore more with the aliens we have, species with their own firmly established backgrounds and lore instead of getting twenty new aliens 10 of which are Not-Krogan, 5 are Not-Geth, 3 have absolutely no backstory whatsoever, and 2 are one dimensional Not-Reapers villain races.

Tbh elcor would be more situation since their speed and anatomy would make them liability in certain areas/terrain and situations were speed is of the essence. That being said I agree that species such as elcor and hanar should have a more serious role but in the form of a diplomat or adviser rather than a combatant.

Realistically we'd probably never see an elcor squad mate in the series, just because they'd have to function completely different in combat than every other squad mate. It's a lot more work for the dev team, which also means it probably would never happen. It's just a lot easier to create humanoid alien squad mates that share all the same animations and such as the main character.

But I can't deny that this would be awesome:
