Does it matter which one I do first?

Not really.

Indeed it doesn't matter much, it's mostly an RP decision but you have no way of knowing what you'd prefer during the first playthrough. Some (RP/flavour) elements in the exalted plains area change depending on whether or not you've completed wicked eyes, so it might be worth experimenting with that.

There isn't a whole lot of combat in Wicked Eyes, so I suppose from that standpoint it might be slightly easier to do it before the Warden quest.

The narrative isn't much different with either order, you have to do both to get to Act III anyway.

AFAIK, the big difference is the Palace yields weapons, armor, and schematics, while the Abyss yields buffs to your stats. So, buff your weapons/armor, or buff your stats.

Doesn't really matter but I like doing both before the Exalted Plains. There is a snip of dialog in WEWH that you won't get if you haven't done HLTA but, that's about it. As was posted WEWH gets gear, HLTA gets stats so, whichever you want to do first.

Do Abyss first.  Put off Wicked for a long as you can.  You'll see what I mean when you eventually have to play it.

By the way,  I highly recommend making a untouchable save before you start Wicked.  And then make a few a key points during the run so you can reload if you need to..and you will.  And buy some aspirin.

If the warden that helps you is either Loghain or Alistair, and he is the father or Morrigan's son, I recommend you do Wicked ways first, because...

Spoiler

If Morrigan didn't have a son or the warden that helps you is the one that didn't appear in previous games (can't remember the name, I never pick that option), I don't think it matters.
