For instance Wolf Creek features violent depictions of Hitchhikers getting raped, tortured and murdered by a psychopath, Human Centipede features a crazy scientist who likes to surgically attach people's mouths to other people's sphincters, however Stick of Truth gets censored because of an anal probe? Despite the introduction of an R18 rating it would seem another game has fallen victim to the Australian classification board, Hotline Miami 2 was banned because it featured a scene in which a pixelated man bends over a downed woman with his pants pulled down in what is revealed to be a film shoot for a movie.

While this probably isn't such a big deal for those not in Australia I would not say the world is immune to the bias between movies and video games as many time video games have come under scrutiny for things movies and television shows would have no problem getting away with, as such it is very rare to see a video game tackle the complex issues and themes shown in movies.

So why do games come under such harsh scrutiny while movies do not?

Games are more of an interactive medium. My best guess is that they may think gamers will act out those violent acts in real life because they could do it in a video game.

Besides video games are pretty young and not treated as seriously than movies.

To my knowledge I'd say it is because the majority of lawmakers (with the power to effect what is okay and not okay to be in movies and video games) watch movies and therefore understand that they are entertainment, they wouldn't want the entertainment to be watered down or lackluster. I'd also claim that the majority of those aforementioned lawmakers do not play video games and therefore do not understand what they are nor care to learn because it doesn't effect them.

Since they have no experience with video games, they've come to see them as immoral, killing simulators that are training us to kill and glorified children toys. When the old guard end up on their way out, we'll probably start to see some changes to where more things are acceptable for video games to do. I say this because comic books used to be restricted in what they could do back in the day compared to what novels could get away with and had identical claims levied against them.

Lots of video game players project themselves into the character they are playing as. If they added something in like rape in a game and allowed the character to do that, then it would be like allowing the player to do that too. But who knows. I wouldn't care about anything they added in a video game though.

Because old stigmas die hard(Games are for kids and nerds who live with their parents), even when the true answer is staring them in the face.

That's not exactly true. Do you seriously contend that big screen movies today (Transformers, Clash of Titans etc) are for old farts?

I don't really understand who they are for, I must confess that, but I have kinda been living in an understanding that the producers assume there's lots of money to be made from teenagers.

While the big market for video games is over 30. I do have to agree that it seems the top bosses in game industry seem to think games are exclusively for 14y and younger. And media thinks the same of course.

And there might lie part of the problem. The other is the rightwing gospel that violence is good, healthy fun for kids, but that any depiction touching sex damages them severely, so they immediately becomes unruly murderers and drug addicts.

I jested.

Also it seems true that current below age 14 are corrupted with tablet android games. It doesn't seem they will be attracted to any serious game soon. They will find DA:I too long and will skip its dialogues. That's why dumbing downing trend exist.

BTW I don't have time or interest to read the codex myself!

I think you wanted the CERO rating system for these obvious Japanese shenanigans.

It's because movies have been around longer. Society has blamed a lot of different things for "corrupting our kids and making them violent killers".

Before games it was comic books and rap or rock music. Once video games have been around long enough, we'll move on to blaming something else. Many of the people who couldn't figure out why a bunch of people thought video games caused violence will be a part of blaming the new thing, and the cycle will continue.

Its because video games cause a rise in violent crime, and in other perverse behaviors, while movies do not.

This is scientifically proven.

I think there are two factors at play here:

One is the fact that movies are recognized as being "art" while video games are still considered by many to be "toys", and thus fit only for children. It's utter bull, but plenty of people think that way.

The other is that games are more interactive, and some people believe that if people do something in a game, they'll want to do it in real life.
