"Man, that test kicked my ***" does not literally mean that the test came to life and assaulted you. Likewise, a metaphor like "the curtain of night" is not literally saying that night is a curtain.

Don't think so. Saying that a test "kicked your ass" does not mean that the test beat you up, but of course, the expression is not implying any such thing, so there's no contradiction. For a thing to 'not be what it is,' it would have to be the case that the test both actually did kick your butt, and that simultaneously, it also did not do so. Needless to say, this isn't possible, so unfortunately, I don't think I can give you that million dollars that I don't have.

That has a little story to go with it:
There's a story about flag desecration that has been in the news lately. I came across one particular story on Facebook, and was scrolling through the comments when I found one fellow attempting to claim that flag desecration was a federal crime, and cited a section of federal law. I pointed out as nicely as possible that the Supreme Court had already struck down that section as unconstitutional and protected flag desecration as symbolic speech, and when he refused to believe that I cited two Supreme Court cases proving my argument. At which point he descended into a long tirade of insults and blocked me.

Aren't people just wonderful?!

Mine is more of an old hate really. As a long term drug addict, I hated seeing drug related posts when I signed in to BSN, because of my shame I guess and the fact no healing had taken place. After an almost four year period of healing, drug talk doesn't hurt anymore, thus not keeping me away from my favorite forums. My fave saying: What you gunna do now addict? Start all over again. If it pops up again, Ill cross that bridge when I come to it.
