What do I have to do to be sure to get Dorian's father quest? I only got that quest the first time I played and never since. Do I have to exhaust all the investigate stuff with Mother Giselle? I gave up hitting all the investigate stuff with her after the first playthrough. (These NPCs tend to recite novels worth of info, an even using the skip forward button still takes forever to exhaust their dialogue!)

Don't talk to him too much (once or twice is fine) in Haven. Once you get to Skyhold, talk to him after every major quest and, any time you return to Skyhold in between. When he gets a letter about Felix, as soon as that scene ends, head for the Great Hall and speak with Mother Giselle. That should do it - works every time for me.

To get Dorian's father quest you need to socialize with him when you reach skyhold as much as you can. He will give you operations if you keep socializing with him. Some of his stuff can only be done on the WAR TABLE like "A FAVOR FOR DORIAN" for an example while others like "killing venetori agents" do require you to go somewhere and kill stuff. Also these killing missions MUST be done with DORIAN IN YOUR GROUP. Also one thing I picked up on which I find dumb is you need to talk to Mother Gizzelle and clear all of her topics. After doing all of Dorian's travelling missions, WAR TABLE missions, and talking to Mother Gizzelle eventually Mother Gizzelle will show up at the entrance way of the main chamber in Skyhold and tell you that she has gotten a letter from Dorian's father.

I think the above poster got confused with "how do you get Dorian" i think.

No, the quest is based on approval so, once you have enough, Dorian gets the letter, then you meet Giselle in the main hall, she gives you the letter telling you to take Dorian to Redcliffe Tavern.

I never talk to Giselle except to get the quest, she is in the main hall right after Dorian gets the letter about Felix and, that can happen any time. If your approval is low, you might need to do a little of his other personal quest but I have never had to do that to get the one to take him to meet his father.

The big thing is to avoid talking to Dorian too often in Haven, if you do In Hushed Whispers. If you allied with the mages, his approval is already almost high enough to start the quest, so all it takes is a moderate approval gain to activate the quest... which can't happen in Haven. Simple work-around: only talk to him in Haven once. Go ahead and get all that approval, just don't talk with him again until you get to Skyhold. Then, when you reach Skyhold, you should get the quest immediately.

It was a well-known bug, but now it's fixed (it was mentioned in patch notes), so if you're still in Haven, you can gain as much approval as you want and you'll receive his quest anyway.
