Is there a lack of Zibber Zabber for NPCs?

No.

There's certainly a lack of powerful dialogue, though.

Lack of... Lack of... Lacking. Yup. Probably. Or not. Hahahahahahaha. Maybe you should stand still more. Ambient **** ya no?

There's a lack of everything. The worlds supposedly ending and people stand still for their entire lives. They don't move, talk, have jobs or do anything. Thedas is made up of cardboard cutouts.

I know this doesn't involve party banter, but I love this image.

I think NPC chatter is great. The only place I found it really repetitive was in haven with the folks quoting the canticle and chantry stuff - always the same few lines.

Hmm In my game most NPCs don't have text and the ones that do have only one line. There isn't a conversation.  I'm not talking about followers.

Skyhold has quite a bit of dialogue. And I like the conversations you can listen in on around the stables.

Exactly the same as every other game ever made, you mean? Either standing still or repeating a few basic animations for all eternity?

I seem to remember exclamation points above some characters in DAO.  I don't remember why they are there but I think it's for quest givers.  It would be nice if they had an old fashion question mark above the characters head.  I think that's what they do in World of Warcraft.  That might screw up the games look but I think it's useful.

The vast majority of NPCs are non-interactive and those that are just say something like "dear me, I've lost these herbs" which starts a quest for you to go get the herbs. Once in a while there will be short, ambient dialogues from NPCs as you walk by. There are no memorable characters outside the inquisition itself. You can bet there wont be anyone saying "Judith for DA4!" or "do we ever get to know what happens to Elven Widow?" or "Frustrated Hunter was awesome, do you think we'll get to see more of his backstory in the novels or comics?"

I guess there wouldn't be much fan excitement for a rousing discussion of dialogue trees.  Ha, ha.

I thought Judith was pretty cool.

Varric: Seriously, why does anyone live around here?

Judith: Oh, you know. The fishing's grand.

You guys should spend more time in Crestwood. The NPCs there have different lines of dialogue for when you first arrive, when you defeat the bandits at Caer Bronach and when you finally close the rift under the lake.

There's also quite a lot of varied ambient dialogue in Val Royeaux. The NPCs get a bit more repetitive in Redcliffe and the Exalted Plains, though. Gaspard's troops tend to repeat themselves a lot.

Every other game ever made? Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout NV, Yakuza 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, Assassin's Creed 1, 2, Brotherhood, Revelations, 3, Black Flag, Rogue and Unity. Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, San Andreas, IV and V. Bully, Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire. Sleeping Dogs, Ni No Kuni. Kingdoms of Amalur, The Witcher 2. Want more?

Pretty much every game set in a semi-open world has the npcs actually do something. From moving around a little bit to having a full daily routine, but none of them stay stationary through the entire game. If you're going to set the game in a vast environment, you have to make sure it feels alive. The simplest way to do that is fill it with people that actually do something. Bioware games have always had static npcs, it didn't matter before so much because they were in smaller, enclosed environments. It stands out now because they have a large semi open world, and it's one of the reasons that world feels so barren and lifeless.

I wasn't a fan of GW2, but watching NPC's coming over and rezzing someone's dead ass kinda blew my mind.

And by someone, I mean players, not other NPCs.

Doesn't this game has like what, 5 hours of party banter .. I know you get to hear around 5 % of it, but it's still there.

I think there is definitely a lack. Sure, there's ambient dialogue like the few interesting/funny conversations that can be overheard in Skyhold and Val Royeaux, but as for actual NPC interaction? Disappointing IMO :/

I miss being able to talk to random NPCs whenever I want. The ones in DAO might not have been the most imaginative (Lothering - lord lol) but they all had almost 3-4 different lines that could be triggered just by clicking on them. It adds to the immersion.

There's none of that here. You can't have a conversation with anyone unless they are tied directly to a fetch quest, and "conversation" is pushing it. I want to *join* in those ambient banters I mentioned. I want to actually affect the people I see or have them affect me. It gets pretty old bumping into groups of robotic villagers just standing around blocking your way when you can't even click on them to hear at least a unique one-sentence reaction.

I'm not looking for cinematics and boundless trees of dialogue (though more cinematic scenes for the side-quests would be welcome), but a little more life in the living would be great.

Plenty. YMMV on how interesting you find them but I've grown quite fond of Charter and Scout Pellane, of Ansburg and his Fereldan, of the two Chantry sisters trying to keep up with a changing landscape, of the other Chantry sister (at least I think it's a separate pair) who was so 'thankful' to IB, of the gossiping nobles, of the two discussing faith, of the dramatically fainting thespians and etc.

There's quite a bit, you just have to listen.

I have to say I do love the fainting nobles and the dysfunctional marriage of those two chanters in VA.

Yep, the problem is it doesn't fire unless you do some blood magic rituals...

How did they do dialogue in DA2.  I seem to remember cutscenes or text. Can someone refresh my memory?

The ones that keep begging to be released from the locked carts in Emprise du Lion grate on my nerves! Same voice, same lines over and over. I wanted to have an option to tell Cole (my main rogue when I play a mage) to not unlock them and push them off a cliff instead!
