Its the loyalty problem I mentioned earlier. Some people are so threatened by another product being good that they don't want to like it;they'd rather it be subpar so they can run it over.
Its a form of fanboyism.
I don't think it's just about loyalty. Part of it is the flame wars that abound around taste. If you like feature Y that game X has but someone dislikes Y and game X flops you get all these flame wars, becuse somehow people need to be right or wrong about liking a certain kind of game. It's nuts.

I think its more that people just like to take shots at each other. Especially on the internet where the chances of it coming back to bite you are very low.

That too, on point.
God forbid another game has a feature that your favorite game has but does it better or slightly differently. Then it gets biblical levels of ridiculous with holy war in-fighting amongst fanbases on the net.

We called it before DA:I that Witcher 3 would probably blow it out of the water and we'll see. May 19th can't come soon enough, but I'd go out on a limb and say it probably will end up being more praised and perhaps get some GOTY's now that Uncharted 4 is out of the picture (because that universal Naughty Dog bias, yo!)
You forgot that Bloodborne is releasing this year.
No matter how good The Witcher 3 is, I doubt that it will be able to achieve the same level of atmosphere and brilliant gameplay as Bloodborne.
I foresee awards for both, particular Bloodborne which has effectively been a system seller for the PS4 (although admittedly Microsoft screwed themselves over with Xbone anyway).
Just like there is a team vampire and a team werewolf, there has long been a team Dragon Age and a team Witcher. I've always been very much a part of team Dragon Age. There is a lot to enjoy in the first two Witcher games, but they also have a series of really annoying flaws - namely the annoying combat systems and the "autistic" sense of humour.
Having found DAI to be rather underwhelming, I'm starting to get a little worried. The Witcher 3 looks like it could possibly be the best in the series.
Are anyone else worried that their loyalties may shift? I've felt very comfertable in the Dragon Age camp. I don't wanna be a Witcher fan.
The Witcher 1 had terrible humour but I thought the sequel improved upon that. In comparison, later Dragon Age games have developed humour that I'd consider "autistic" rather than The Witcher series which has continually improved in writing and characterization.
I have loyalties to neither series. Well it did belong to Dragon Age at one point but now I realize the series will never go back to what Origins was even though I enjoyed Dragon Age 2 (which I thought was above average) and Inquisition (which I thought was good but not great). The first game in The Witcher series was horrible IMO but the sequel was a massive improvement featuring a great story where your choices mattered (they did in the first game too but I just thought the story was inconsistent so it ruined everything else for me).
I enjoyed The Witcher 2 a lot but I it was lacking elsewhere notably in terms of character customization, influencing Geralt as a character and combat (which while good, wasn't anything innovative). The Witcher 3 looks similar albeit having a more open world and faster combat. Still I think it'll be better than Inquisition if we go by the prior Witcher game where quests were far more interesting than what we got from the last two recent DA games, that and I'm sure the story will be better too.
Unfortunately being weighed down by lore and having to stay true to a character means that CD Projekt has restrictions when it comes to playing as Geralt. Only time will tell if, without these restrictions in Cyberpunk, we'll get a role playing experience from CD Projekt where every little thing is decided by us. I felt The Witcher 2 allowed us to influence Geralt is some way but he never felt like my character and the customization was lite too not just in terms of equipment but in the skill tree.
In any case, if you enjoy the game enough, don't fear becoming a fan. I consider myself a fan of both series now just no longer to the point where I care about the ridiculous fanboy wars that you often see on YouTube where idiots from both sides come up with all sorts of crap.

Dragon Age > Mass Effect x a million!
Mass Effect 3 gameplay > DA:I gameplay
Mass Effect 3 overall < DA:I overall
Well, enough of this I haven't played DA:I the ending mission yet. Also I haven't killed any dragon...

I thought The Witcher 2 was better than any Mass Effect game. I enjoyed the characters more, the gameplay and the story.
Neither later Dragon Age instalments or Witcher games have been able to beat Dragon Age Origins IMO though. When I played it, I knew it would be an instant classic and sure enough, it was (at least for me).

iirc, there was no gameplay shown in this panel, some dude just explained how Geralt's decisions can affect the world - a quest branching trees, ...stuff. i'll add a link later (when/if i find it)
I'd like to see that. Are the differences substantial?

pff - Morrigan will eat her alive:)
Mass effect was...interesting. They tried to make it as cinematic as a game will go and still be not a movie....but in 3 they just started telling who Shepard is and didn't leave enough for the players.
Shepard is a soldier!....oh you selected a class at the start? Irrelevant!

As others have said, relax and enjoy both series with no guilt. ![]()
But, if it helps to salve your conscience, remember that CDProject Red began their development journey with the Witcher using Bioware's Aurora engine (heavily modified) that they licensed from Bioware on (reportedly) very generous terms because Ray and Gregg liked the people running the company and wanted to support them in their desire to start making games rather than only distributing them.
Without that support and technical assistance from Bioware's founders, CDPR may have never been able to bring Witcher1 to fruition, and the rest of their subsequent journey would have been still-born.
So the whole fan-loyalty-defensiveness just seems a bit silly to me. There's at least a kernel of the Bioware-of-old inherent in CDPR's growing legacy IMO, thanks to Ray and Gregg.
That said, I personally now rate CDPR as a developer over EA/Bioware. DAO remains my favorite game, but Witcher 2 is a very close second for me and the subsequent trajectory from Bioware has been disappointing for me personally. But Bioware has done so many incredible games over the years so you could never count them out totally.

As funny as this sounds. I think games sometimes get emotionally invested in a single series. Then. (I know how it sounds but just go with me) they feel like they are cheating or betraying their company by playing a rival company's game and worse yet they might actually like it. (Sounds a little dirty) they shouldn't its just a video game. I'm sure the devs here are fans or other video gaming unless they only play their own.

CDPR and Bioware aren't even rivals. It isn't like they hate each other or are in some kind of competition with one another.

@LeeT:
unfortunately... not really, female char is playable for short periods of time (i'd imagine a quest or two), narrative reasons or something. you cannot chose to RP Ciri instead of annoying Geralt.
yup, i was a sad panda when i learned this
You wrong. You play only as Geral. We may get to control other charters for short time or few missions. Like in Witcher 2 Dandelion for small part of mission or Stennis. This best example of media blowing something out of proportion. Like DA:I have 40 endings.
Geralt is main character.
My bad, and theirs, that would have been interesting. My only beef with the witcher is the one character. I don't mind not chosing my character in JRPGs since there's usually a bunch of them. Just one seems dry (I know it's to repsect the original material but still...).

Don't have to hate someone/thing to be a rival. And CDPR and BioWare are indeed rivals. It's just no where near as serious as the fanbases make it out to be.

Why worry about witcher 3 being better when Witcher 2 is still better than all of DA
A lot of ignorant stereotypes about witcher series
The combat that combines thinking and skill and expects you to be accountable and take agency is a bit of a drag

Yeah, as good as Dragon age series are, even Witcher 2 tops DAI in storytelling, gameplay and epicness.
I mean if you just watch all these trailers below in a row you gotta admit CD Project is capable of presenting its world and setting more interestingly than Bioware ever could. But again as others have pointed out several times why one cant enjoy both series?

you know, i would totally enjoy the Witcher series if they gave us character customization, or at least change the VO, i cant suffer trough 50 hours of Doug Cockle
