Anyway when you break it down the two franchises(DA and The Witcher) are hardly comparable.

In one its a party-based RPG with a create-your-own-hero system in place.

In another its an RPG with an established protagonist who's journey you help dictate along the way.

They don't aim to look similar, they don't aim to sound similar, they don't aim to be similar in any way, shape, or form.

And yet people argue over them like its Coke vs Pepsi. At least one of them has to be Dr. Pepper.

They both were originally marketed as dark fantasy however. One went all the way while the other was more of a PG version. Otherwise I agree gameplay is completely different.

DAO marketed itself as "dark heroic fantasy" whatever that means and beyond being gory it was pretty light and soft the entire way through. Seriously the only dark bit about it is Hespith and a lot of that is presentation since DAI has the same plot point.

Remember back before DAO was released, they were talking about the romance scene between The Warden and Morrigan and they were like, "we're not gonna show it in this presentation because y'know, we didn't pull any punches"

I love DAO, but yeeeeeaaaah

When it comes to love scenes, c'mon now

Can confirm. I'm playing through DAO right now and I finished that particular segment last night.

Everybody was going crazy on the forums over how awesome the Hespith section was back when DAO was new.

So cool

It's probably my favorite lone segment in DAO and is a contender for the darkest moment in the series, but it alone doesn't make DAO any darker than DA2 or Inquisition. DA2 has a number of moments that come close to matching it (if not meeting it outright), and DAI has a handful as well (though DAI's darkest bits come from the codex and aren't seen in-game).

DAIs dark stuff is either only alluded to (e.g. the tranquil talking to Mother Giselle who was clearly abused in some horrific ways) or shown but not really shown well (e.g. how red lyrium is "grown").

In fact red lyrium is (for good lore reasons) pretty much identical in its function to the darkspawn taint except with less body horror.

I suppose that's what makes the darkspawn so dark for some - it's a lot of visceral body horror (for a Bioware game) - and that's uncommon.

I hope the next Dragon Age can stay bright and vibrant while also integrating some of dark fantasy elements in a suitably Dragon Age way.

I'm mostly worried that TW3 will be so huge that it'll take me forever to play it.

But if it does have meaningful choices and major differences in resulting content, what's the chance you'll ever get to see all of it if it takes 100+ hours just to get through it once? A game like DA:I or Fallout 3/NV takes me at least two months to finish a single playthrough unless I'm rushing through and ignoring sidequests, and TW3 sounds like it will be a similar size.

Oh damn, well if it takes you that long, yikes. I power through games like that. Same game time as everyone else, but I dedicate more time to them.

I still have faith in DW3. After DAI I'm not pre-ordering though...probably unfair since it is a different company but I will not have my first game totally spoiled by bugs and crashes like in DAI.

I think the idea of "team DA" vs. "team Witcher" makes much sense. At least not to me. I am glad that both series exist and I play them both.

I may think that the Witcher may be slightly ahead but that is mostly because I like their combat system more (and that is a matter of taste) and because of CD Project RED's awesome business model, which is quite unique in the industry's AAA sector. In terms of story telling, characters and world building, I think both series do a fantastic job. Both also have flaws but in general, I don't think one will overshadow the other any time soon. Also, these series are not like Assassins Creed or CoD where we see a new iteration at the same time every year. They do give each other enough room to coexist.

I do hope that W3 will be the best in the series yet and from what it looks like I am optimistic. Will it be better than DA:I? I think there is a good chance that it will (IMO of course) but that would be great. We do want to see evolution in games, not devolution, right?

Only "loyalties" that matter are PC master race vs console peasants and Intel vs AMD :|

Game "loyalties" are just silly, they are mostly opinion based which can change. Play what you enjoy and keep the "teams" out of it and stop sounding so dramatic :P

My big bet this year is The Witcher 3 and I think it will not disappoint me ... per hour.

The art design appears to be so well done; love to see shots of the vistas and skylines. But without pause and the included profanity, nudity, and pixilated sexual content, will pass and watch for screenshots.
