I started a nightmare PT recently, and I decided that I'll play Iron Bull with sword and shield (pretty much as a tank) and Blackwall with a 2H weapon. I'm also playing Sera as a DW and will give a bow to Cole when I recruit him.

I didn't change Cassandra's original setting, but I don't think I'll use her much anyway, since I'm planning on getting the Templar specialization for my dwarf inquisitor (I never tried it yet).

Did you guys try this yet? Also, did anyone think about how to play the mages the way they are "not meant" to be played? My first thought is not using spirit blade with Vivienne, but I don't know how to do something original with Dorian or Solas.

Yep. Cassandra as 2H dps and I always use Cole as a ranged assassin too :)

There's technically no "wrong" way to play a mage. Their spells are all part of a tool box.

The closest you'll get is Dorian tank by abusing the rebirth passive with healing and never dying.

that's it.

Ah, I might try that. Basically I'm going for original ways of playing the game so I don't get bored.

I always have Cass switch to two-handed fighting, because I think it fits her personality way better. Also because I like having her and Blackwall both around.

Not a fan of DW, so I switch Cole to Archery. However, after having tried Blackwall as 2H, I prefer the S&S version instead.

I don't re tool the companions but my Quizzy is my Tank and, he's a mage. I have Iron Bull set to defend my archer and if I take anyone else, they are on their own. Keeps my warriors away from me in combat, and that's how I want it.

S&S Blackwall rarely dies in my playthrough. I'm playing on Hard right now. He held his own vs. the Fereldan Frostback for several minutes before finally dying.

Imo, black wall is over kill for hard.

I have IB with essential sns passives and actives, vanguard and everything except dragons rage for reaver and he is still unkillable.  (and pumps out the hurt as well)

I figure I'll let him pick up dragons rage when i can out fit him with plus guard weapons.

As IB, Blackwall, and Sera do not see action in my games, I do not have direct observation on their effectiveness in combat. But Cole makes a formidable Archer, as is Varric, and all the Mages can hold their own even with varied spell schools.

I always turn Bull and Blackwall into sword and shield. Then again, Bull is also seen in the cutscenes training with a shield (and Blackwall with a 1h sword), so it's not really "the way they aren't meant to be".

Blackwall is clearly meant to be played as a tank (not only because of his starting weapons and cutscene, but also because champion is the best specialization for a tank). Iron Bull, on the contrary, starts with a 2H weapon, ans since he's a reaver it's fair to assume he's meant to be played as a high DPS warrior with 2H.

The thing is, I already finished the game in nightmare with every character using the weapon(s) they started with, so now I'm trying different things. Anyway, I figured out what to do with the mages. I normally gave skills from at least 2 elements to each of them. Now I'm turning them into "pure" specialists in one element only. Let's see how it works.

S&S Blackwall should NEVER die after he gets the champion specialization, even in nightmare. If that's not the case in your game, consider changing his build.

I found Blackwell makes an outstanding 2H - especially so at lower levels.  I'll usually "sneak" into the Fallow Mire early and pick up the schematic for the Masterwork 2 handed sword that is right outside the camp there - if you stay out of the water and don't light any beacons you only have to fight 2 undead and I think one of the wisp thingys so even at 5th or 6th level you can usually make it to the camp and pickup the schematic, then head back out again.

I will usually do the same after getting to skyhold, take a quick jaunt out to the Hissing Wastes, avoid all the fade rifts and baddies and head for the canyon, I only have to fight  a couple of spiders that way and I grab the even better two handed sword schematic from the tomb there and head back out again, then come back when I'm higher level and can actually start taking on some of the tougher denziens found there.
