Ok, I just have to get this out of my system. And also tell Bioware how their games can affect some people when they get lucky and hit the spot.
I guess it is a bunch of roses just as an outburst of bewilderness and confusion. To some it might seem childish. Maybe it is. Or maybe it isn't?

Let me first tell you that I am a grown man. I had my 50th birthday last summer.

Tonight I decided to end the game. That means go further than I ever did in nine playthroughs. I never finished the story because I was waiting for a fix for the cutscenen crashes.
But never mind that now.

As I said I went on and gathered the team for The Arbor Wilds. The Temple Of Mythal was on the menu. I was exited.
I've read some spoilers and more or less knew what was going to happen.

The choice to either let Morrigan drink of the well or do it my self suddenly made my head spin. I was lucky the game crashed just in that particular moment.

This is a post I made in another thread just after the game crashed. It explains how I felt in this particular point of the game:

"Help - I have a problem!

I need help.

I am put to the test as nowhere else in the game. I gave in and took the team to The Temple Of Mythal for the first time to finish the map and get on with the story.

Yes, yes, I know. I crashed a couple of times, but I think I got the idea. Even without the dialogues.
Actually I'm quite happy I crashed exactly at the point where I had to decide if Morrigan or I should drink of the well.

I just discovered how much Morrigan means to me. It's utterly ridiculous, right? It's something I didn't see coming. It hit me like a hammer.
I can't leave Morrigan to be bound by Flemeth! Not in a million years! Not after her struggle to get out of her claws. I helped her fight Flemeth, the wicked witch! And I had a child with her.

Then this woman turns up after the Winter Palace and wants to help. Ok, fine by me! ("I'm not talking to you before we get home!")

I didn't think that much about it. Not until we were standing there at the edge of the well - and I had to decide weather I should deny her what she wanted the most, or if I should protect her from evil.
Suddenly the old feelings from DOA came brushing in like a tsunami. You know the drill, right?

CURSE YOU, BIOWARE!

You really know how to play with people's feelings!
It just ain't fair to bring an old love interest into the game like this! Morrigan is so vulnerable. And she doesn't even know it!
Aw, maaan....! I'm completely out of control with this one. Damn!

So, my question to you all is: What do I do. And why?

My insticts tells me to protect Morrigan - again.

But what did you decide?

Please help! Time stands still until I am able to make my decision.

- I learned something important by this: Fictive characters can often be more real than real people.

Especially if they are made well.

And game developers like Bioware are close to a point where reality and fiction can get mixed up. You can really get deep into a game without noticing it.

I was completely an utterly in love with Morrigan again in this moment. So deeply. Maybe even more than in Dragon Age Origins.

Well say you drink from it, she then finds out the cost to you and says she's glad, so there's that.  Really who knows the ultimate consequences but knowing how Morrigan feels about Mommy Dearest, probably kinder for you to take the plunge.  OTOH you could just play it through both ways at that juncture, making two different saves, and see how you feel coming away about both outcomes?

Make Morrigan drink from the Well.  She deserves it.

If I am playing an Elven Inquisitor, I drink form the well, it's Elven knowledge and, any Dalish would want that, no matter the price. If not then Morrigan drinks, she knows more about ancient elves than my Inquisitor so, will make better use of the knowledge and, she made it clear that she doesn't mind paying a price for ancient elven things. (Eluvian) so, I let her have it.

Sometimes protecting the person, in this case Morrigan, means letting her deal with the problem in depth. Also by the outcome of letting her drink I think soon she will understand things better, she will have more knowledge and the truth may make her stronger than her dellusions. Let her drink, it will be important for her growth.

You're probably right. I have a feeling this is the direction my decision will take. At least there's an excuse and an argument in it.

The point with my post was not weather Morrigan should drink from the well or not. Merely how intense a fictive game figure can be without you being aware of it.

The feelings I had for Morrigan suddenly bursted out in flames in a moment. That was what knocked me out. Completely. I was simply not able to make a decision. I only cared for Morrigan. Nothing else mattered.

Completely idiotic, right? A non-existing video game figure...

Or does she exist? That is the question. Bioware made a character that has made a huge impression

This is what I am puzzled about.

I always have my elf drink from it, if any other race, Morrigan. If you think about the ending with Solas, a romanced Solas makes it even more interesting!

I never understood why so many people were eager to drink from the Well of Sorrows. Do they expect that it was named that way ironically or what?

After you, Morrigan. I have more than enough sorrows in my life without bathing in a concentrated pool of the stuff.

I did it because Yoloquisitor.

You and your character are different beings. You may want to help Morrigan but your character not only may not but will not know they are harming her. So.....Do what your character will do is in ignorance...

Also, the crash issue maybe on your side....And there 50 year olds on this board....and playing this game?

Wow.

Here I thought this would another rant against the game....

Edit:

I have to ask, are you planning to marry Morrigan like those guys in Korea or China or whatever marrying their videogame characters?

LOL I love this op. Crazy, I know. While I've only had 2 play-throughs reach the Well of Sorrows (btw, romanced warden, OGB Kieran, went through the eluvian) I despise her willingness to sacrifice herself for the possibilities.... that said, while, up to this point, I have denied her the WoS, given what may(or may not) have occurred during the post credits scene... it may not mean all that much to Morrigan outside the scope of DAI.

Morrigan I've saved your ass enough times. This time, I let her have it. She's a character who is very interesting. I feel with my warden I had to look out for her because she was young and naive. She's grown up now, more mature. I let her drink every single time. Not because I care for my Inquisitor, I'm more attached to Morrigan than my pc. I feel she's reached a stage in her life where I'm done holding her hand. Let her go through with it and suffer the consequences.
This is a testament to the fantastic character writing in bioware, we grow with these characters and eventually we set them free.

I think one of the reasons DA and ME characters make such an impression is that the games are long enough for you to get attached to them (whether you like or dislike said characters).

It's a game for adults! Not so surprising that adults want to play it. Unless you're planning on forcing yourself to give up gaming in 10... 20...30 years time?

Can I add something weird to this:

Playing Wicked Eyes & Wicked Hearts for the second time last night ("only", I know), I noticed that Morrigan has uniquely different conversational poses & gestures. I can't believe it, after ten years of BioWare, almost all of her movements whilst talking I hadn't seen a billion times before!

(Looking at you "raises hand to order drink, threateningly leans on bar, swipes mug off bar with unnecessary force, drinks and shakes head whilst pushing off bar again with both hands". You've been in 4 games of two franchises and counting. You know it, and I know it.)

When I played Origins for the first time, Morrigan was my warden's LI. It was the only time I played a Morrigan-romanced warden through to the end, because every warden I played after that (but two) were spellbound by a certain redheaded bard from Orlais. Anyway, I never thought much about Morrigan after that first game, except that she always disapproved of every decision I made :P

I loaded up that first game again when Witch Hunt came out, and I felt some closure as regards the Witch of the Wilds, when my warden followed her through the Eluvian. It was all good. I was happy. Time to turn my attention to DA2 and sarcastic femHawke, who became the best protagonist I'd ever played in an RPG. Even better than commander Shepard... and that's saying something.

Then inquisition came out, and I was re-introduced to an older, wiser, softer, more maternal Morrigan, and I fell in love with her all over again. I love what they did with her for Inquisition, and I look forward to what the future holds for her. I know how you feel, OP. When Bio does write good characters, they make them memorable for sure.
