I don't know if this is new with the latest patch but pretty much like the title says my party members (currently iron bull and vivienne) stop using their skills automatically after playing a while. I didn't even respec them or anything. I put some new gear on them and did travel to different zones and stuff, I don't really know when it occurs. I'll suddenly realize it's happening when Vivienne stops using her spells and Bull goes down fast for some reason... Restarting the game seems to cure the issue though.

I've only had this happen when:

1) someone was set to follow self. Never set someone to follow self.
2) someone was carrying a veilfire.

Your problem sounds different though.

Do you have their mana/stamina reserve set too high and, they are running out of what they can use too soon? It should be at or just above what the highest cost ability you want them to use requires. Early game that is quite low 10 or 20%, by late game that is usually around 80%.

They will use abilities when they have more than the mana/stamina you set. Yes setting it to 0% means they use the lowest cost ability as soon as they have enough mana/stamina to do so but, that also means they use it often and, never get to the higher cost abilities.

1) I disagree. Setting someone to follow self insures that they do their own thing. This may glitch them out eventually but I have success with this tactic on the AI tank and he does use his skills upon first starting a game no problem. Just checked.

2) I did carry veilfire! That must be it! What a ridiculous bug if that's what causes it.

Opposite. I set reserves to 0%. I understand how this tactic works and remember, this bug is cured when I restart the game.

I believe it could be the veilfire that is causing it as mentioned by Psychevore

I will have to remain mindful of this when in an area that requires veilfire and combat...

EDIT: Bug still happened and I didn't use any Veilfire...

Setting someone to follow self translates to:

Will only do something if attacked, personally attacked. Most of the time they'll do nothing in battle until someone literally smacks them in the face.

Your party setup should be (unless you're DW rogue):

Tank: follow PC
Ranged companions/non tank melee: defend tank.

For DW rogue to work you're going to have to take control of the tank (and probably set behaviour to follow self and pray for the best), then manually target.

I use Defend (self) rather than Follow (self) on Cassandra. Does exactly what I want it to do. I set up Cassandra to prefer Challenge and Horn of Valor, with Shield Wall and Shield Bash enabled and she tanks aggro like a champ.

Defend self will also mean she'll wait until she gets attacks.

Follow PC means she will attack the instant you hit an enemy.

All commands, whether it be follow or defend, are triggered upon an attack hitting. This is why both follow and defend self are, in my opinion, utterly worthless. For your party to work correctly at least one of your companions is going to have to have follow pc as command, just so everyone can get triggered.

I've noticed defend self they will just sit there...but when warrior is on follow self, he will initiate skills as soon as i attack.

That's not true at all. I always have my followers set on follow themselves and they certainly fight during battles.

[And, to be more specific, they do so even if not attacked personally. They are actively fighting from the moment the battle starts.]

Yep I get this occasionally as well.  Cassandra will not use warcry or challenge.  Then when I check her the abilities are off cooldown and stamina is full.  Restarting fixes this for me as well.

The times I set Sera or Varric to follow self they'd mostly look at the flowers until something hit them. I swear on my mom, lol. They would fight soemtimes, sure, but not as actively as they should.

Last time I tried was with patch 2 though, I think.

Still, I'd set your ranged to defend your tank. This ensures they start attacking after the tank has drawn aggro, and not before.

Alright, I can confirm that the bug just happened to me and I didn't use any Veilfire. It's something unrelated....?

If all enemies are panicked and are just running around not attacking anybody, my team stops fighting. Clicking on attack my target cures this.

Not a new thing, just rare so devs have ignored/and or cant find problem in the fubar engine they call Frostbite.

iv had it happen on multiple playthroughs, sometimes it fixed itself after 30 min or 2 hrs and on a couple playthroughs it was never resolved over hours and hours of playtime

I have been seeing this lately on my DW rogue playthrough.  I have been using "attack my target" on my opener and periodically during battle which helps a lot.

Could there be an issue with having too many abilities set to preferred?  I usually set just one offensive and one defensive ability preferred.   (DAI tactics?...yuck)
