I am in the Forbidden Oasis and collected all of the shards I could find. Yet when I try to complete quests I still need more shards to open doors.
Do I have to go to a different area to collect the shards and then come back? Or am I just missing some in this area.
In order to open every door, you have to collect every shard across every area.
Yeah, there are 100+ shards in the game, and you need to get them all if you want to complete the Oasis temple.
Just to add, you don't HAVE to do it. The rewards are not worth it if collecting shards is not your thing.

I usually just collect enough to get the first set of elemental resistances. Occasionally, I'll collect enough to get the second set, but there's no way I'm going after all those darned shards! Not when I can defeat the last boss without them.
I rarely if ever even bother to unlock the oasis. Don't like the layout, got enough of the you can't get there from here silliness in other areas to deal with already, and frankly I can't imagine any loot worth running all over Thedas looking for those dang shards. Icl. Not a big fan of the bottles of thedas thing either, just annoys me to no end when I get near one and it screws up my search feature until I find it. I wouldn't bother picking them up otherwise.
I only collected them all to obtain the achievement. I would say it is only necessary/worthwhile if A: you're maybe not the best player, and B: you want the nightmare achievement. You get 20% defense against each of the elements plus a superb belt of resistance for each (30%). Depending on how you craft your armor you can literally stand hands on hips in front of a dragon breathing on you and laugh like an anime superhero.
