This was a valid concern until DAI where 1/4 of companions & advisers are nonwhite. At that point, I think you could have one of the villainous characters also be brown. Yes, Southern Thesosians (except the Chasind) are white, but if they work around that for the protagonists, it's no longer relevant to the other side of the narrative either.

This issue isn't merely about white people being victimized. It's also about giving a fair account of all people and avoiding creating a higher standard that you hold other races to than you hold whites to. Having them all as protagonists means people expect better from them. When those unrealistic expectations are shattered in real life because we're all flawed human beings, that contributes to racism.

The point the OP makes about LGBT, though, is entirely invalid. We have little information about that for most of the villains, but we know both Marjiolaine and Branka were either Lesbian or Bi.

 

I wasn't talking specifically about Dragon Age, just in general as people didn't seem to understand why complaints are often made about only having a single minority figure portrayed badly. 

 

I agree Dragon Age wouldn't have this problem as long as it keeps going the way of Inquisition.

I kept reading this comment and pondering has the person who posted it actually played the Monkey Island games? Or even bothered to read anything Sarkeesian has said? Or why exactly Sarkeesian even brought up here?

 

How exactly is Guybrush cowardly? How is he physically or verbally abused? Why does the poster seem to making the point how MI games are about making the player pity or feel negatively about Guybrush, who is constantly shown beating stronger opponents by his smarts and making strides in life? The whole point the poster makes about Guybrush not looking like a pirate and having to prove his worth was the whole point of the first MI game, as was Eleanor's escape as it flipped those exceptions of what kind of roles different characters play in stories.

 

Besides I am even more utterly baffled why the poster seems to think that people would view the female version of Guybrush as some kind of a negative. In both cases it is a character using their smarts and intellect to overcome odds in a non-violent manner while showing that expected stereotypes don't dictate who we are. As much as I've followed Sarkeesian's argument, isn't that the exactly what she is pushing for more in games?

This would actually be a valid complaint if the vast majority of BW companions to date (all games included) weren't either white or a different species.

The beautiful thing about Bioware forums is that participation is completely voluntary.  You can, if you should so choose, just play your game and avoid all social discussion, thereby confining yourself to semi-make-believe social questions such as mage vs. templar, Elven subjugation and Dalish isolationism, resistance or compliance to Imperial nationalism, ethics associated with all of these subjects, etc. etc.

 

You are free to come and express your discontent with a post also, as you have, and as the originating poster has.

Probably the same reason I picture characters I write as white or Native American, that is my heritage so, it's what I see in my mind's eye unless I make a conscious decision to create a character of a different race. Most of the writers are white, or light skinned at least so, I imagine that's simply how they picture the characters they write. Nothing intentional about it, just how it turns out for the DAI team is all.

Truly? Go 10-15 years back... sure the games were still criticized for being violent, having sexual content and what have you, but they weren't supposed to live up to someone's moral standards about equality and stuff like that. 

 

I remember a computer game based on D&D was released in 2003, buggy as hell, no patches, poor reviews. The most talked about part of the game? A sidequest involving your male PC getting married to a guy. Gamers actually derided the game for that, imagine that, GAMERS (i.e. usually short, fat, socially awkward and likely living in their parent's basement) had the gall to criticize anyone about anything, I nearly facepalmed myself to death. But I digress.

 

The point I was trying to make was, that nobody was forced to add a homosexual character in their game, and the game did not fail because of that said character, it was terrible either way. 

 

You can't force people to change, if the current key demographics are straight white male who likes buffed up male lead and an hour glass figure damsel in distress, then obviously they are gonna cater to them. 

 

The first and foremost priority of the video gaming industry is entertainment .... yeah , lol no , like every other industry, it's profit. And the only obligation they have is to make the highest amount of profit without breaking any laws of the country they operate in. 

 

Not at all saying that I agree with it, but it is what it is. And I applaud Bioware for their 'different but equal' characters .

In fact the game is about us being opressors against minorities. Why the hell can't Darkspawn have their rights? And what about red lyrium people, they aren't worthy of dignity? We are just cruel slaying opressed people.

Because, historically people of their skin color and sexual orientation had been the most privileged and oppressive lot, as compared to all the other races. So, they somehow think that it's their responsibility to "right all the wrongs" done by the evil white men. They may themselves amount to nothing, but will still see members of other races as someone who needs their help even though the said members of other race may be more privileged than them. 

 

In short, morons who either need a new hobby or actually start doing something about equality for everyone instead of just raging on tumblr or whatever other hole they swarm in. 

 

People who are actually discriminated against because of their gender, color or sexuality have better things to do than cry about an entertainment software. For eg. Homosexuals in my country have to worry about discrimination from the society, getting disowned by their family, having the highest legal body in the country declaring that who they are is illegal. I don't think they give a flying fu*k that DA:I wasn't released here.

As a Cis White Male what difficulty I face in my life has nothing to do with the portrayal of my skin and gender type in a video game I play.
