Well, my coworker solemnly believes (or maybe now she does not I haven't seen her in 2 years) that gender is relative to a lot of really shallow things like hair, colors you gravitate to, dolls, etc. THAT is gender to her.  It would have sent Gloria Steinem into a fit of apoplexy.

I am one of those who pleads guilty then to having no gender if that's how you define it.  I don't feel female.  I feel like me.  I don't feel male, either.  I don't know how you feel gender.

That's why I am like the most open person to everything because I don't fit into any group in a way that I feel comfortable, but that's a whole nother topic and I'm doing that thing again where I ruin a thread by musing...

Yes, romance options...Cassandra is the best one in the game.

No fan of pixie cuts. I have yet to see one women sporting it that I find beautiful. But while I think Cass would look a lot better with longer hair I don't mind that she doesn't have it. She sure as hell isn't there to look pwetty.

I'm disappointed with the m/m options, but I don't make hundred of threads about it.

How many threads has the thread originator made on it?  I am personally disgruntled enough about the hair styles, if you can call them that, and the bear spawning to make multiple threads.

I don't want to make this an "us" versus "them" because I want it to be just an "us".  People should be happy with the product they buy, gay and straight.

That was the idea I desperately tried to convey, my friend. o/

Enough with this subtle heterosexual male discriminatory campaign going on in the fandom.

Bioware fans form a diverse group. People can't start ganging up and acting in a disrespectful manner just because one group has a different morality from another. Learn to coexist in harmony.

The only romance option I ever really liked was Leliana in Origins. Josie is ok too but I don't like how the romance makes me lose control of my character. All of a sudden my Dalish elf inquisitor starts acting like he's in a 1940s romantic comedy.

Do they only choose people with extremely small heads and large breasts as secret police?

My problem was the characters were all cliche.

I would have really liked Cullen to have........... handed me a shovel and told me to go dig a latrine.  I would have respected him more.  He's a military commander.  Plus he should have ditched the dead cat around his neck by the time I started the battle for Haven.

That would have given him a personality.

Basically, he should not have been interested or respected my character until my character had proven themselves.

I miss the days of romancing evil companions.

In fact, I miss the days of having evil companions in the first place.

I didn't realise until I started talking to her, but you can flirt with Harding - not sure if you can as a female - wonder if she was a planned romance option then pulled before games release? There aren't any romanceable dwarves in the game - nor was there in DAI or II... It would make sense for there to be, however. I might make a dwarf and see what happens

You can flirt with her with female character as well. She's not really LI though, you can just flirt with her and I heard that ends with her invinting you to tavern, but that never happens at least on-screen.

Evil companions only make sense in a game with a karma scale. Like Dark & Light in KoTOR, open & close palm in Jade Empire or Good, Evil & Neutral Karma in Fallout 3.

In games without a karma scale like in DA, there is nothing to indicate that a companion or protagonist is evil or good.

Besides 'evil' & 'good' aren't really definable terms and a persons actions don't necessarily indicate whether they are evil or good.

For example, spoiling the Sacred Urn could be seen as an evil act, but depending on your point of view, it could also been seen as a step towards lessening the stranglehold that the Chantry has on the people of Thedas, which could be a good thing.

Harding can be flirted with by a character of any race or gender, but alas, you can never actually go on that tavern date. Still as close as we've ever been to a romanceable dwarf, though.

(The statistics, which I cite whenever someone brings this up: BioWare have written full romances with forty humans, eleven aliens, eight elves, two half-elves, a Tiefling and a one-eyed Qunari. And zero dwarves.)

But that would mean I had to separate Aerie and Nathyra out as well! Although I guess 'three elves, two drow and one avariel' doesn't take that much longer to type.

...

In relative terms, if we go by Bioware's own statistics telling us 68% of the inquisitors created are men (assuming that number is representative for the gender balance), the under-representation gets worse. Female gamers get twice as many LIs as their numbers entitle them to, assuming an "equal playing field" is a goal. If we compare to the probable number of gay players, the relative under-representation of straight male LIs is much, much worse. To compound matters, the two LIs for straight males are seen as either masculine (Cassandra) or not especially physically attractive (both). And only one LI is a companion.

That said, I realize straight males are likely to be less interested in that aspect of the game than any other gender/sexual orientation. But the simple fact that these threads keep popping up, means that it is a commonly held perception than straight men gets shafted. Excuse the pun. As shown above, that sentiment clearly is warranted and the militant parts of this community should try to respect that fact.

...

The thing that annoys me most about these discussions is this premise (bolded by me in your post). I'm going to state the obvious now. A larger group of people needs more resources than a smaller group because, well, there are more of them. And in real life there are more straight men than gay men so if every straight man is going to find a partner there have to be more straight women than gay men.

But, and this is the part that strangely seems to escape some people, you do not play DAI as a group, you play it as an individual. Therefore your straight male character needs exactly the same number of LIs as a character of any other orientation. Every straight guy who plays DAI has the same number of LIs for his straight guy PC as the gay guy's gay guy PC. While I really don't like using the word fair (as it's often abused and very imprecise) this seems perfectly fair.

If you want more LIs because you happen to be in a majority group its like saying that you should be paid more than a gay man because there are more straight men, which, if true, would make you a horrible person.

I was gonna make the same post, but I'll just add my thoughts to this one. I agree with OP. Jospehine and cass seem to have this odd masculinity to their faces that isn't appealing.

I'm not buying Bioware products anymore.  I'll cherish mass effect one, two and dragon age origins though.

All the more reason to make it playersexual because individuals spend $60 on a game where they are told of the 8-9 possible romances you, the individual, are allowed only 2.  That means that you don't get the full value for the game you just bought like you would if it were playersexual like they did with DA2.

They have the ability to put time into romance coding if they remove all the bear coding, fetch quest coding, and stupid shard coding.

They already have the ability to change the pronoun because they do it with the bisexual characters, so let's not pretend this is hard work on their part.  It also doesn't ruin the story for you to know that a gay guy also gets Cullen or a Lesbian also gets Morrigan because they don't exist in your game.  In your game you are _______________ and your romance option is whatever you are.

If we are "all just people" and as Macklemore says, it's the "same love" then it shouldn't frickin' matter if they wrote the character specifically for _____________ or not because the romance should be the same--if we are all truly the same (which I believe).

(to Zobert) Wait, you still get the full value of your game. The player is not denied the content, they simply have to play the game a certain way to unlock. It is still avaliable to every player who purchased a copy of the game.

The player gets access to all eight romances, if they're willing to make a character that meets the requirements for them. I know many players like to play characters that share their sexuality, but not everybody does.
