I want to talk to my people whenever. I want to be On The Road.

That was only in DAO, DA2 you had to go to their home base to talk with them, though they all had different homes except Varric and Isabella. It would be nice to be able to initiate conversation in camp at least though.

I also prefer talking with my companions in the field.
It feels rather stupid when you get the meassage "Return to Skyhold and talk to Vivienne" when she's standing right next to you. Doesn't it?
In this moment I feel i'm being dragged around for no reason, just to lengthen the the game. I'm surprised that Bioware didn't add another 'lengthener' to this by demanding you to wait 48 hours.
That's one of the things that makes Skyrim great. You can talk to everyone everywhere at any time.

But Vivienne may want to talk in private and not just in the wilderness somewhere with the other companions around. She wouldn't talk about Duke Bastien and their past together where others can hear.
I do see your point though, it would be good for certain conversations.

.
Yes, I see your point.
But it would be easy to get around this. They could just let the conversation be located in a private atmosphere where the other team members wait in a polite distance?

That's problematic depending on the conversation style. For DA:I's non-cinematic conversations, that could definitely work. It wouldn't be so easy for the more involved/in-depth cinematics though.

But you're completely right about the non-cinematic conversations. We should be able to question Varric about red lyrium pretty much anywhere.

It'd would be fun to at least see a little more interaction between the Inquisitor and the companions outside of Skyhold. It wouldn't necessarily have to be every time I clicked them, but even just specific landmarks that are of interest to companions triggering a mini conversation or cutscene could be nice.
In Awakenings, you couldn't drop in and talk to your character whenever, but since they were all in one place, it was easy enough to run around the room and check for new content. Outside of Vigil's Keep, landmarks were interactable and triggered a conversation with your companions. This was a nice feature to me, and (when the game wasn't being too buggy) gave me reason to revisit a couple of places when I acquired new people, just to see if they had anything to say.
I wouldn't necessarily want that 'click some random object in the world to trigger a conversation' mechanic added exactly like that in future titles, but I think having various trigger points in the world could be a lot of fun (and would make it seem like time actually....flows. (this might just be me but only speaking with people in Skyhold made me forget often that time was passing, and that, no, it wasn't strange that you were receiving some of the more personal ones so 'soon' XD))

I think it's a gameplay issue. Unlike DAO the world doesn't freeze if you talk. Conversations might get bugged if you interrupt by combat. In fact they'd need to be reactive to it I think to not look ridiculous. And bioware would have to test them quite rigorously to avoid dialogue bugging out.

I like the cinematic conversations, so I'm fine with them taking place at a "base". You couldn't have Cassandra chase Varric around a table, or the chess/card games, or other scenes like that if they had to take place in any kind of environment.

But there are places in the world where we can have conversations, like at camps (talking to the requisition officer) or at merchants or at a wide variety of quest locations (like keeps, or the hinyerlands crossroads). So perhaps we should be able to talk to our companions there, even if only for the non-cinematic conversations.
