Someone pointed out that Flemeth tells Hawke not to be afraid of the Abyss and not hesitate to 'leap' in DA2 while  the quest with Hawke in DAI is called 'here lies the abyss'. Could be just a cool coincidence, but what if that hints that Hawke will survive?

I like that theory, it'd be a nice little callback to her advice in DA2.

Or perhaps Flemeth could have gotten them (or the Warden-ally) out of the Fade safely, in exchange for yet another favour she needs them to perform, since we've seen many times before that those kind of rescues and subsequent deals, tend to be her thing? We also know that she can enter the Fade freely, since she's able to go there to meet Kieran if he's the OGB?

And if Alistair was left behind in the Fade, don't you think that Flemeth would want to rescue him in order to convince him to finally go through with Yavana's plan in the Silent Grove to awaken the sleeping dragons? Yavana probably was acting under her orders, after all, so that might still be one of Flemeth's goals?

It's a stretch and would be a major handwave, sure, but so was Space Magic?

It's an interesting theory...Anything is possible in BioWare land, after all. :) I've always firmly believed Morrigan is one of the good guys deep down. Flemeth I'm really not sure - it would certainly be cool if she was a Snape-like figure who was actually protecting various heroes along the way. Whether it's likely or not...I don't know.

Personally I couldn't leave Hawke behind. I love my Hawke - even if that so called "default" Hawke was barely recognised as such... :P It wasn't really a choice for me - sorry Stroud, you're cool and all, but bye bye. I must try a world state where I make Alistair stay with the Wardens - now THAT would have been heartbreaking!

Whatever stayed in the fade will become a vessel for the Nightmare.

I think that either Hawke or the warden contact likely survived, but I'm afraid their fate will be an terrible one. I wouldn't be surprised that if at some point we return to the fade only find Hawke or their warden friend captured and corrupted by the nightmare.

Yeah, I couldn't really do it :( Even if Hawke was an abomination, I couldn't kill him... Y_Y it was enough to kill the whole party off in DAO Darkspawn Chronicles...

Like you, I loved my Hawke. It was difficult to leave him behind, but my Inquisitor is the sort who thinks ahead and he needed the wardens on their side and a warden to lead them - aka Loghain-  thus a hard decision was made Y_Y sorry, Hawke...

Anyway, it's good to see other people coming up with the idea of a nightmare-possessed Hawke... I'm actually working on a fanfic where the Inquisitor returns to Fade to search for Hawke... the problem is, can a Fade Rift be opened from the Fade itself?

I've never seen the Herald actually doing it. There was already a rift opened (Adamant) or he opened it himself, but it was always from Thedas side, never the other way around...

Or am I missing something? :)

A more horrible twist would have been Corypheus being able to choose whether or not he morphs into his default form, (explaining how he's able to do so now when he couldn't in Legacy), so we'd discover that between Hawke leaving to find us and our meetup in Crestwood, Alistair/Loghain/Stroud were taken over and the person helping us has been actually our nemesis the entire time?

Would have made Corypheus seem even more cunning. As the Warden-Ally, he'd reveal the plan about the Wardens being under control, as part of a massive gambit to get us to Adamant, discover the plan to unleash Nightmare, where he'd then convince us to go into the Fade to try and kill the demon... and boom, he's back in the Fade, all thanks to us?

Just on this topic: The choice wheel says "likely to die", or similar. Have BW confirmed that the one left behind definitely did? It seems an odd way to kill off a former PC - or a perfect one, depending how you look at it. Personally I couldn't kill my Hawke, but if they survived, I like the story potential there.

Not just Hawke, anyone you choose to leave behind in the Fade. The button says the person "may die," so anything is possible.

Having only Hawke survive would necessitate a reason for why they survive when the others don't, which leads us back to branching storylines, which is something BW is pointedly stepping away from. They learned their lesson about irreconcilable world states with the Old God Baby, I doubt they'll be repeating the same mistake with Hawke here.

Did you actually play Inquisition?  There are, what, eight different resolutions to the Chantry/Templars/Mages story arc alone, and that's only if you ignore any detail greater than  'picked mages or templars'.  If you get into conscripted or not, and still on lyrium or not, that number gets up to, I think, twenty-four different possible resolutions.  The fate of Orlais has five possible outcomes, six if you include Gaspard's relationship with Ferelden.  The Wardens are pretty much the only ones that, regardless of your choices, all go to one end (Weisshaupt goes silent).

That sounds plausible, but pretty anticlimatic.

Given what we know about Fade entities its very possible that a benevolent spirit (maybe the same one to help us) brought Hawke from the brink of death.

Even if Hawke (or whoever gets left behind) survives, what will happen next? Will they live their in the Fade? Will they somehow get out someway?

Whether or not Bioware wishes to persue this is up to them.

I hope they're dead, tbh. I don't want my [Hug Varric] feels to be for nothing.

Varric would...

My Hawke decided that whacking the giant spider demon with his stick was the best course of action.

I'm gonna hazard a guess and say survival wasn't his goal. So with that, I think he's probably dead. And that's fine, he did a noble and brave thing. I mean, the fact that he even managed to distract it for that long with such a basic tactic is amazing in and of itself.

The fact that the mission was called "Here lies the Abyss" had me convinced that my Hawke was going to sacrifice herself (don't hesitate to leap!) and I was so upset about her dying that I put off doing the mission for a long time. I loved playing as Hawke, had a fanboy squee moment when my Inquisitor met her, and really wanted her to have some happiness with Isabella after the near unrelenting horror show her life went through in Kirkwall. So when it came time to choose who stays behind it was a no brainer, sorry Stroud.
That being said it would be great seeing whoever gets left behind return as either a servant of the Nightmare or as another piece in Flemeth's game. She's done with Thedas just yet imho.

I think Hawke could have been much better in this game. I left mage Hawke in the Fade because as a Mage I felt he could handle it. Any other time I leave Stroud in.

The fact that is said "hawke will likely die to cover your escape" made me choose Hawke.

I know what she (in my case) is able to do.. so i thought she would survive.

I imagine whomever getting left behind becoming inextricably part of the Fade, never able to separate themselves. They're, in essence, the opposite of Cole.
