Ever since Crusty started doing his LP featuring BSN members, I've been wanting to do one of my own. I thought of my main gaming obsession at the time, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but for various reasons I never got around to doing it.

However, the recent release of Xenonauts gave me an excuse to return to the idea. Xenonauts aims to effectively recreate the original X-COM: UFO Defense as faithfully as possible while adding some new features, like a cover system and a significantly overhauled and more robust air combat system, as well transposing the timeline from the then-near future of 1998 to 1979, in the heart of the Cold War. I also imagine it will be more to the tastes of certain crusty old grognards here on this very forum.  :P

For more information, visit the Xenonauts wiki at http://xenonauts.wik...Xenonauts_Wiki.

The 1958 Iceland Incident was our first contact with extraterrestrial life. An alien craft entered our atmosphere above the Atlantic in what we now believe was a scouting mission. It was detected and intercepted by NATO jets operating under the assumption it was an experimental Soviet aircraft.

Visual sighting of the UFO rapidly dispelled that myth - the craft was far larger than its radar signature suggested, more akin to an airborne warship than an aircraft. Attempts to communicate elicited a barrage of energy weapon fire that disintegrated half of the squadron and left the remaining jets limping back to base with severe damage. Several subsequent attempts were made by NATO fighter squadrons to intercept the alien vessel, costing them a number of aircraft but inflicting no appreciable damage on the target. When the UFO abruptly changed course and began heading for the eastern coast of the United States, the decision was made to deploy nuclear weapons.

Twenty minutes later, half a dozen nuclear-tipped ICBM ignited the sky above an uninhabited part of Iceland.  Astonishingly, the UFO survived the blast - but it crash-landed, almost intact, shortly afterwards. At this point, the NATO forces made the decision to inform their Soviet counterparts about the alien vessel and seek their assistance in securing the vessel and the technology within. This decision was seemingly motivated more by self-preservation rather than altruism; the Soviets were furious at the large unexplained nuclear detonations and were apparently close to launching missiles of their own.

A joint ground operation was launched to capture the alien craft, but numerous extraterrestrials had survived the crash and put up stiff resistance. Human forces took significant losses during the operation, but slowly secured the area around the craft. What happened next is uncertain - all we know is that the alien craft was destroyed in an enormous explosion, almost certainly caused by the craft's power source. This explosion annihilated the UFO itself and wiped out all ground forces within a ten mile radius (the only survivors were those at the distant command post). There was nothing left; the UFO was gone and only a handful of those who had sighted an extraterrestrial were left alive.

The aftermath of the Incident involved a large scale cover-up. The official explanation was that of a Soviet invasion of Iceland thwarted by nuclear weapons, with heavy losses on both sides. But behind closed doors, the two superpowers were collaborating - a joint black ops organisation was formed, drawing from the resources of both. Unofficially dubbed the ""Xenonauts"", it was tasked with defending the planet against alien invasion. The absence of an obvious alien threat has made us look rather irrelevant for the past twenty years, Commander - but we had little doubt we would be needed some day. It seems that day has come.

And without further ado ...

CHAPTER ONE: SEPTEMBER 1ST, 1979

9duhxG3.jpg

Prior to the events of September 1979, nobody in the world paid much attention to the thought of extraterrestrial life. The Iranian Revolution had occurred months before, and the eyes of the intelligence world were fixated on the nation. A secret Soviet biological weapons factory was under heavy suspicion due to an accidental anthrax leak months before. In America, the 1979 NFL season kicked off, which would see the Dallas Cowboys complete one of the most improbably comebacks in NFL history and the Pittsburgh Steelers win a record fourth Super Bowl over the Los Angeles Rams. Fox Mulder was a month away from turning 18 years old. But Pioneer 11, planned to be the first probe to visit Saturn with a flyby scheduled for the first of the month, abruptly ceased transmitting.

On the 1st September 1979, an alien fleet abruptly arrived in orbit and began to destroy the planet’s satellite network. Within a few hours, unidentified craft were scouting the upper atmosphere, none responding to any communication methods. Several nations made intercept attempts as the UFOs entered their airspace, but none were successful and most resulted in heavy losses. Surviving pilots told of beam weapons disintegrating whole squadrons in moments, of disrupted flight systems and an inability to acquire missile lock with any form of air-to-air missile. The only victory of the day occurred over the Bering Sea, where multiple radar stations tracked a single interceptor flying under classified call signs successfully engaging and destroying a high-flying scout craft.

As the burning wreckage sank into the depths of the Bering and the damaged aircraft limped back to base, governments across the world began to receive telephone calls from an organization that had spent the last twenty years hidden from view. The deal was simple – a monthly funding grant and authority to operate in a nation’s airspace and territory, in exchange for protection against extraterrestrial activity. Reluctantly, all the major powers agreed. The entire planet’s hour of need had come, its fate resting on the shoulders of the few dozen Xenonauts.

God help us all.

Nice job, Baron! I enjoy your amount of detail. It's funny that you mention XCOM cause I was actually thinking of doing an LP of that in like 2 months cause reasons.

I also like how you had a "trailer" for the next episode tbh.

And lol

Currently leading Strike-One is Sgt. Inquisitor Recon, a skilled sniper with quick reflexes, all the better to deny accusations about his queer moon-based religion.

I'm just glad SimfamSP is not in it tbh. He'd get everyone killed (including me - again).

I did a LP of Xenonauts once.

I believe I even put a thread here on BSN, Ahh...good times.

The LP actually ended as a great success with ONLY 12 deaths.

That sad, there are some great balance and additional content mods out there (hint: try mine. There's gattling guns to be had. There's also one that has breaching charages and allows you to make your own entrance into a UFO)

Dunno if you played Xenonauts before or not, so I'll give you a few tips in the spoilered:

I know Fast Jimmy is ready to start dropping bombs over Baghdad.

I know that doesn't make any sense.

Evidently the aliens too had heard of the wonders of cocaine

Thanks for the comments everyone.  :) I daresay this may eventually include a very large chunk of the subforum, due to Xeno-COM's ravenous appetite for pilots and fresh meat to replace the inevitable losses.

This first mission will be fairly heavily detailed. Future missions won't be quite so blow-by-blow, since there will be a lot of them.

If I may offer a few more suggestions:

1) Smoke is more effective the more tiles with smoke there are between you and the enemy. For each smoke tile the bullet has to travel trough, accuracy suffers a penalty.

2) You can edit the config file to set the ratio of male/female recruits. It affect future recruits (list is refreshed daily or when you hire a recruit) and will not mess with your saved game or LP. Perfectly safe. The default is 0.4 with gives you a rather high number of female soldiers for that time period. Personally, I play with a value of 0.1

3) You can download an extra portrait pack with more and prettier faces. It should also be fully compatible with a running game.

4) C4 is your friend.

5) Stun gas missile is a great way to force aliens out of the UFO and into your guns.

6) Since you can make custom loadouts or roles, consider making a grenadeer (shield and grenades. LOTS of grenades) and tactical (missile launcher and rifle)

7) You can also edit a lot of other stuff in the config file, like the time it takes for your aircraft to rearm or refuel. I do suggest tweaking that bit, since rearming taking half a day is redicolous.

Ah, I've been wondering exactly how the smoke mechanics worked. Thanks, Lotion.

What is your opinion of the Hunter armored cars? In my other games I've found the rocket equipped ones to be a huge boon on night missions (headlights), and are otherwise good at offering squad firepower a shot in the arm in the early stages and providing an emergency OSH*T button. I wouldn't take them every mission, but they have their role.

They are fine. Personally I almost never, ever use them since squad members get XP.

But they are good in a pinch (low on manpower) and for scouting.

The better dropship with greater troop capacity comes (IMHO) far too late in the game (unless you are very lucky and get the necessary prequisites earlier), and cars become more useful then.

Generally I use a shield+grenades guys for scouting (+ pistol or stun batton in the backpack. You want to keep a grenade in hand and on the belt. Reduces throwing cost).

Once you get Buzzard armor then those make ideal scouts. Just jetpack to the roof and snipe.

Keep in mind that LOS and obstructions are important in this game, you want as little things between you and the enemy as possible and you want to use cover as much as possible. Even starting alien weapons can easily 1-shot kill your troops and the first armor you get is not very effective.

Flashbangs are your friend when breaching. A surpressed enemy loses it's ability to reaction-fire, meaning your assaults can charge in and shotgun the alien from point-blank in the face. Or beat the living snot out of it with stun batons.

Sadly, the stock game does not support making your own breeches into the ufo (the out walls are indestructable) and some UFO's are deathtraps. The only advice I can give you is patience and LOTS of explosives/gas.

Also, avoid night missions if possible. Time your dropship arrival to happen during the day. Aliens see farther than you at night and IIRC, only one stock armor has a night vision bonus

P.S.

There's a mod that vastly improves the usefulness of armored cars, but I don't think it will work if you already researched armored cars.

Heheh. I was worried about that line - thought it was potentially very funny or very corny.

Might be a mini-update later today, I have others things going on tonight. I will also probably downsize the pictures to 720p for posting, to make load times easier on some people. Hopefully that won't reduce the detail and readability of them too much.

A mini update for now - Chapter Three will once again be split into two parts, which will come either in the wee hours of the morning tonight or tomorrow.

CHAPTER THREE: GLOBAL WARMING IS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

A note for the audience.

When you shoot down a UFO, it's crew is randomly killed or injured. That's why the 1st missions was so easy.

You will see later, when the alien land or do a terror mission. More aliens. Tougher aliens (say goodbye to easy kills).

Then the casualties will start piling up

Good suggestion, I like that better than having to manually downsize all the pictures to 720p (or else just play the game at 720p, but who wants to be a peasant?).
