One thing I realized after starting gold, is that you can no longer stick with a single character for every mission. The reason being that the variables of team compliment, location, and enemy type really begin to weigh down on you. My early times I stuck to only human vanguard, but once I started going for gold, that method became a joke, especially when banshees suddenly attacked in threes and a group without a primer made me rather weak. Nowadays, even though I use a variety of characters, I mainly go between three....
Asari Huntress Infiltrator: This character is completely set up for 'Boss Nuking Biotic Artillery'... and one that is as squishy as moon sand. I generally do well with her as she primes her own biotic explosions, and she only really has a problem with her softness if she takes a wrong turn into a dead end or gets flanked. She can single-handedly down a pair of banshees IF she doesn't get flanked by marauders or cannibals. I use this character mainly if there is a tank around, or if it is a rather wide open map and/or against reapers.
Asari Valkyrie Sentinel: I know most would not see this as much of a sentinel, as compared to most tanks, she is mush, but she is surprisingly resilient on gold... usually lasting long enough for biotic artillery to nuke the enemies I prime with annihilation field (plus I detonate some myself). Generally, I use her for when there are vanguards and/or adepts and/or asari anything around, as she is able to 'paint' bosses by running around them, while keeping the boss from attacking the biotics. Also, with the constantly changing nature of biotic heavy fights, she can easily switch to detonating primed targets from a distance (like if you have a swarm of abominations).
N7 Slayer Vanguard: This is the one I have the most fun with, HOWEVER, his uses are rather limited... Fighting reapers really limits him to the most minor of enemies (husks, cannibals, and marauders) with any significant efficiency... Fighting collectors pretty much puts him only in a position to fight captains... Now, geth and cerberus, the slayer is scary (as long as the embarrassing move of getting near turrets and pyros doesn't happen too often). With cerberus, he can decapitate almost everyone through walls in 1 heavy melee, with the exception of phantoms (who can still easily be taken down by leading with a charge before heavy melee), dragoons (melee flurry follow up tends to finish them off), and obviously atlas mechs. The slayer works best in small maps or maps with a lot of rooms and walls in between (such as firebase glacier and firebase reactor). Geth scanner is a MUST.
