Okay so last night I decided to play one of my characters rather than beeyatch about them on here and was doing the Darkspawn quest on the Storm Coast.  I passed one bear who mauled us, then walked (in game) probably 15 feet to fight a Hurlock outside the cave whereupon we were beset by TWO bears from behind that whuppued up on us and potions were drank.  Then we go inside the cave fight more Darkspawn and I let my companions talk after the fight because it was a good dialogue when out of nowhere ANOTHER frickin' bear that we had to fight.  Then we leave the cave and guess what?  Two more bears!!!!!

Bioware, WAT?

Seriously, I love bears.  They are cute, cuddley-looking and adorable from a distance.  They are not pack animals like wolves, they are capable of being killed IRL with a single shot from a rifle.  However, in DA lands a single bear cannot be killed with 20 arrows (if not more) from Varric, 4-5 fireballs, a giant, small-headed bull wacking at it with a giant axe, and Dorian shooting electricity at the thing. They are almost immortal or something.

AND they respawn like elfroot.

Corphy should have gotten an all bear army because then he could not only take over all of Ferelden and Orlais but destroy the Qun because obviously they can destroy a Qunari warrior in short order.

Bears....really.

Bears....really.

This sums up the entire game for me.

I like bears irl, but in Thedas they must be the avatar of EVIL. Screw spiders, if Nightmare had chosen to spew bears, my Inky would've died of terror right there. Wasted opportunity.

It's the frickin' respawning...there are spots in the game where you will be attacked by 3-4 bears within a minute.  It's crazy.

Seeing that GIF... just another show what kind of huge morons humans can be. Bears are not freaking dogs or pets or some show clowns for our amusement and shouldn't be treated that way. That guy was just begging for it. I feel so bad for that bear... :(

But back on topic... I've never had any real problems with bears in DAI.

There is an area on the Storm Coast (i think), south east part of the map, that I like to call Bear Valley.  You fight one and it's almost guaranteed you will end up fighting his entire clan.

You probably mean the river area. It's a good place to get ram meat. I just keep my distance to bears, wait them to kill a ram and then go collect the carcass. Then just rinse and repeat. Sometimes they can be quite faraway and the carcass just drops onto your feet. I've completed the ram meat quest that way in every single playthrough. :)

For me it's the northwestern Hinterlands. It's like with cockroaches there really, for every one you squish you'll get a dozen more. Just less squishing and more desperately fighting for your life.

Say cheese!

Spoiler

I so want this in Skyhold.

Just think if the bears scaled to the level of the party!

Seriously, if Grey Wardens recruited the bears, darkspawn would be scared shitless and wouldn't even think of invading the surface ever again.

But yeah, during the early game in Hinterlands it was pretty horrible :D Not only were templars respawning right in your face when you were looting a group that stood on the same place before them, but those god damn bears... I was planning to set up a camp, when suddenly a wild bear appeared. I killed him and immediately I was in combat with a 2nd one. When I almost defeated that one, a group of lyrium smugglers casually walking by decided to join in. Then a pack of mabari hounds. And then a 3rd bloody bear :D Who came up with this worse-than-any-mmo respawn system should be slapped across the face.

I donno I found the bears pretty weak and easy to kill. Even when you get rushed by those three great bears in the hinterlands (and sometimes get even more bears rushing you).

Honestly the only enemies I've ever found difficult were spellbinders pre-specialisation.

Are you serious?  What are you playing on?  I could kill 50 spellbinders, rape and pillage their village, and come out drinking fewer potions than tangling with a single forest camp bear.

Nightmare. Keeping a melee character from suicidally running into the AOE cone is a difficult task. The only thing that causes me to lose potions.

Pre-level 7 I find them to be the only thing that actually forces me to lose potions.

It's also why I find the mage in your heart shall burn challenging whereas I think the templar one is an almost laughable joke.

Well they DID say they were looking hard at Skyrim and where bears in Skyrim are OP, BioWare wanted to outdo them and make DA:I bears into nature's superheros.

You don't know true terror until you're looting your enemies corpses in triumph glee and then, behind the loot pop up, in the near distance, you barely see it...a brown blur heading towards you at a rapid fire pace....

The bear. He's found you. And you're not quick enough at backing out.

Why, oh why, do they always spawn at the end of battles and right next to me?!

Well, the few occasions a bear has managed to surprise my team and I haven't felt the need to fight it (or been low on health), I've just clicked 'disengage' and made them run back to the nearest camp. You can easily outrun a bear and it won't do anything to the rest of the party because it will focus on you. When you reach a camp, the bear gives up instantly and wanders away. It's actually pretty hilarious how annoyed the bear sounds while you're running away from it. ^_^

I save a lot in these areas. When this daisy chain of bears, bandits, mabaris and wolves starts, I just reload and go a different direction. It's a great experience to survive it once, but not worth the bother overall.

I save very often, past BW games tought me that :D But sometimes reloading a game made the spawning even worse, because it triggered a spawn of a group that wasn't there before reload. Sometimes even at the very place you were standing. Boggles my mind.

Oh I particularly enjoyed going looking for the Great Bears, finding all three of them at once - and then being ambushed by another four of their slightly smaller brown brethren...... >_<

Still, I will admit that once I'm  leveled and armoured to the point of knocking down a dragon in less than two minutes, I like to take a jaunt over to the Hinterlands and exact a little revenge by commiting bearicide.

I agree with this 100%.

Honestly, who cares about darkspawn, spiders and demons? They're just a distraction for the real threat and main antagonists of the DA series: The Bears!
