I'll be that person! Since real football is apparently a wuss sport, I'll say American Football is a wuss sport, especially compared to both codes of rugby, boxing, MMA, hockey etc. I watched a few games now and never have I seen the referee come down so harshly whenever someone actually makes a good tackle that is deemed "dangerous". Even referees in real football let dangerous tackles go from time to time...

 

The whole without pads arguement is one of the stupidest in sports

 

Which brings me to this point. Those poor, multi-millionaires can't take a little headache...   Rugby players get injured all the time, but you know what, they go on with their lives. Rugby players often retire with a plethora of injuries, including injuries like cauliflower ears, broken noses amongst others that make their face almost unrecognisable from when they started playing. All this and they get paid a lot less than American football players do.

 

The only reason football players are so protected is because they are so high paid, forget thinking it's for "player safety"... Rugby players have been playing without pads for a hundred years and there has never been any real issue. Why? Because rugby players are real men that accept playing the game comes with the threat of major injuries and even brain damage. Nowadays, our football players are no more wussier than your football players...

You can't compare real football with American Football or rugby. Football is a sport explicitly without body contact. Being tackled or falling down are the exception, while contact with other players is the norm for American Football and rugby.

That also means that the forces involved are different. A footballer usually only has to deal with his own energy and will probably be okay if he can avoid hurting himself on the ground. A rugby player has to deal not only with his own energy but also with that of the opposing player(s). Vastly different situations.
