Every character has some paragon and some renegade to them. Even the Illusive Man, Saren, etc.

 

It is less black or white, and more different shades of grey. Just like everyone.

 

I would argue that Tali has more paragon to her than Liara, although both have their darker patches.

 

Tali can get rather annoyed and stressed sometimes (especially when you reveal the evidence during her trial, and she tells Shepard not to talk to her)... But Liara is always faithful, in effect. I rather think that... Okay, this is going to sound really odd, and complicated.

Liara's 'renegade' patches are by FAR more bad than Tali's.

But her 'renegade' patches have more 'good' parts than Tali's.

 

It is a bit like comparing Kick-Ass to Kick-Ass 2. Overall, Kick-Ass is the better film. But Kick-Ass 2 has better good parts, but worse bad parts.

The fact that you're debating subjective "moral upright" and conflating it with similarly subjective "rainbows and butterflies" does nothing to counter the fact that the character takes several positions that are objectively renegade according to how the game assigns value to them, nor does the whitewashing of the character's behavior to fit your notions of what the character should be. Further, your conclusions are based upon a specific outcome in a narrative with mutliple paths and eventualities for the same character. Your intial assessment based on what "makes more sense" is an opinion.

Liara has schizoid personality disorder, I'm not even going to try and make arguments about that character, but I could do exactly the same whitewashing of her behavior with supposed paragon motivations as you've done with Tali to make points contrary to yours. 

Either way, we have different interpretations of multiple characters and won't agree so it's pointless, and I'd go to the character threads if I wanted to do this crap. I'd rather get back to bashing lesser life forms.

 

Fair enough. We can't agree on Tali's characterization but we can agree that Liara's writing is, by comparison, downright terrible. Works for me.

It isn't an appropriate description. I conflated some aspects of SPD with DID because I'm derp and not a psychologist, but felt like taking the class anyway. DID is more accurate. She seemingly displays multiple personalities. Does that make sense?

Well, that's just inconsistent writing over the course of three games. If you include the comic happening over the two years when Shephard was dead her development makes -some- sense. She doesn't go from cuddly to psycho immediately and most of the "psycho" is just an act.

That was my read on it. I enjoyed the Liara romance stuff in ME3 more than I expected to, even if she wasn't my favorite.

 

I have an instinctive empathy for characters who can and do (because they feel forced to) shift on a dime between radically different worldviews. At any rate, I like Liara as a character and as a romance option because I feel like I understand what living in her mind is like.
