Does it do anything?

From what I've seen all shields have +30% Front Defense. I currently have the following shields:

Orlesian Balanced Shield - 25 Armor Rating: Front

+30% Front Defense

+8% Melee Defense

Darkspawn Alpha Shield - 24 Armor Rating: Front

+30% Front Defense

+6% Magic Defense

+4 Strength

+20% Focus Gain (lolbioware)

Estwatch Guard - 22 Armor Rating: Front

+30% Front Defense

+3% Magic Defense

+3% Melee Defense

+6% Ranged Defense

On Hit: Gain 3 Guard

It seems like even if the Armor Rating has an effect on survivability there isn't enough of a difference between shields for it to be a consideration and we should be choosing our shields based on their perks. Yes? No? Shut up, Meg?

Each successive point of armor rating is more powerful than the last because it is a flat damage reduction. I would always use the highest armor rating shield I have available, with two exceptions in addition to that focus shield:

1. March of the Everlasting which has (5% more damage per enemy in an 8 meter radius) which IMO makes it the best shield in the game.

2. Wintersbreath which has berserk, 20% more damage but 200% more damage taken, which makes it the worst shield in the game.

Dwarven proven shield also has this bonus in addition to a cunning bonus if I'm not mistaken, and 28 armor. Atleast thats how I remember it. It could compete for that title, if you only have that of the two that is... :)

Perks - I dont thinks the difference in armour levels are that significant with the shields you have mentioned

All told its not great, has a heal bonus but its so little (something like +6%) that dwarven proving or marches is better even though the armor rating is lower

about this ability(5% damage per enemy) ive been wondering, does it stack with your weapon if they both have the same skill? i ask because i have the caliban and it also has the same ability as this shield, so does this mean i get 10% for every enemy within 8 meters?

Don't have caliban so can't test it. Considering how buggy the game is I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't stack right.

I have both of them.  If I get around to testing, I will let you know my findings.

sounds good, i would test it myself but i don't use the legionnaire enough to notice the damage difference. i wouldn't know if im just getting low/high damage rolls and dismiss it as working or not.

I've used Estwatch Guard for the longest time on my Legionnaire.  Two days ago I got Shield of the Emperor and the most noticeable difference for me was the missing 3 guard on hit that I used to get from Estwatch guard.  I couldn't feel the heal bonus or the Heal 15% of damage taken over 10 seconds either.  Both work for perilous just fine.  The armor difference is negligible IMO.

Higher armor ratings make guard more useful, since the damage dealt to you is lower. By the by, I just did some testing regarding the armor rating of shields. It seems to add to overall armor value, not just reducing damage from the front but from the back as well, at least to some degree.

A bit of background info: Level 16 Legionnaire, 71 Armor, 18 base Constitution + 16 from gear.

Comparing Shield of the Emperor (33 Armor) with Inquisition shield (5 armor).

Both with and without the temporary 200% armor bonus from upgraded War Cry.

I do have Turn the Blade (20% damage resist from the front). I don't have Bear Mauls the Wolves (immune to flanking).

No armor bonus passives.

For the record, these are rough averages, and the numbers were from the damage dealt by zone 1 melee Red Templars.

Routine

Shield of the Emperor:
1 from front, 15 from back
1 from front, 5 from back (War Cry+)

Inquisition Shield:
3 from front, 24 from back
1 from front, 11 from back (War Cry+)

Threatening

Shield of the Emperor:
25 from front, 115 from back
1 from front, 45 from back (War Cry+)

Inquisition Shield:
38 from front, 130 from back
1 from front, 60 from back (War Cry+)

Perilous

Shield of the Emperor:
76 from front, 303 from back
1 from front, 180 from back (War Cry+)

Inquisition Shield:
91 from front, 338 from back
16 from front, 210 from back (War Cry+)

Also, the duration of War Cry's bonus armor is broken. The buff lasts 10 seconds like the tooltip says, but you start taking regular damage again after 4, the default duration of War Cry. Come on, BioWare. Do they actually test this **** or just write it and hope it works?

This actually makes me think that armor rating on shields is pretty worthless. If that is the difference between an armor rating of 5 and 33 then the difference between 22 and 25 will probably be about 5 damage per hit on Perilous. If that. The advantages of the perks on some of the shields far outweighs that.

Thanks for taking the time to test it though. And for finding yet another bug.

I have Shield of the Anointed, an item level 12 unique:

18 armor

+17 Maximum Health
+9% Melee Defense

And I've been using it because it has a pretty purple name and I think 9% melee defense might be better than a few points of armor. The next highest I've gotten was a common with 21 armor or something.

I don't know anything about the math, though. I'm just guessing. Am I right?

I agree. The damage reduction between those two shields, arguably the best and worst, really wasn't very visible regardless of difficulty. I had to triple my armor rating to see a notable difference, so a shield with a good ability would be the better choice over armor rating, imo.

The argument could be made that armor rating protects against both melee and ranged attacks, so it could be more useful in that regard, but probably not by much. 9% is better than a bit of extra armor, although ranged defense is probably more useful than melee defense, since melee damage is easier to avoid, but it's not like we get to choose the gear we're given.

Either way, a good tank with a bad shield is better than a bad tank with a good shield.
