- What exactly are the vows taken by initiates? Are they forbidden from pursuing a relationship other than the Maker?
- What is the role of a chancellor? I read that "Brother" is the only rank for men in the Andrastian Chantry.
- What about the Templars, which group do they fall in?
- Since Alistair (and possibly Cassandra and Lelianna?) have not taken vows then are they considered Affirmed?

The Templars are their own group. They are allowed to marry, with permission. Alistair never completed his training, while Leliana never took vows. Cassandra is a Seeker, so she probably took vows, but as with the Templars the Seekers are their own group, separate from the Chantry's priesthood.

the Templars are technically a separate order, they chose to work under the chantry's authority way back when, hence them deciding to leave again directly before Inquisition.

Thanks for clarifying ![]()
Another question: How is one recruited to the Templar Order, does one have to be associated to the Chantry?
Only those folk who take vows become initiates. These are men and women in training, whether in academic knowledge or the martial skills of a warrior. All initiates receive an academic education, although only those who seek to become templars learn how to fight in addition.
Also the Codex states that an initiate who can opt to become a Templar, and are given combat training.
Since Templars do not take chastity vows, does this mean Initiates who become Templars are exempted?

Being associated with the Chantry would certainly help, but really it sounds like anyone can apply to become a Templar. Cullen for example kept trying to join when he was just a random villager.
Templars can take vows of chastity.

There could be different sets of "standard" vows depending on location, order and perhaps other considerations too.
Either way, Templars are initiates - and clerics seem to be either a subset of initiates or a step (small one) above them. And all of them are brothers and sisters of the Chantry, though I don't think I've heard Templars referred to as such much.
Templars, while being a distinct order, were not separate from the Chantry - not until the Mage-Templar war. They did split from the Chantry but before that they were considered part of the Chantry rather than just its allies.

Ahh my bad totally forgot Cullen's background,
Yes, a vow of chastity isn't mandatory. But what I meant was if an initiate who have taken chastity vows becomes a Templar, are they still bound to it?
EDIT:
I'm focusing more on the Chantry in Ferelden, before/during the Fifth blight, reason I'm asking is because I'm working on a small mod project, and am looking through references and feedback.

Well, it's a vow. A person can break it anytime they want. But they usually make that vow for a reason, so aren't likely to choose to break it.

I don't think they ever touch it in series but im not sure if in that case person can become templar as it seem 2 separate paths.

If it's a formal vow then as it's optional it can probably be lifted by a Revered Mother. If it's a personal one then who's going to really care.
