Not necessary, exactly, but it certainly doesn't hurt. Then again I'd probably say that for any series, so? XD

I would recommend you play Dragon Age 2. Inquisition follows it a fair bit, and several characters from that game return. Origins isn't necessary to fully enjoy Inquisition, but Inquisition makes some nice references to Origins (and 2 major characters in Origins return in Inquisition in big roles).

I really enjoyed both previous games, but they're both very different from this one (and from each other for that matter).
At the very least, I think you should watch youtube videos from the previous two games. If you can buy them for an affordable price, consider it. If you can borrow them, go for it and just give them a try! They might really help deepen your understanding of the lore. That way if it turns out you don't like them, you can always just stop playing them.
But definitely watch content on Youtube, definitely.
Edit: Welcome, and don't let people scare you away. There's some extremism and grouchiness here, and because of the potentially radical different perceptions regarding the lore, the fan base is very splintered, but there's also some really fun people and discussions if you look for them.

Not necessary but recommended. At least to some extent. If you wan to appreciate the lore and get the subtleties you really do want to actually play the games. But then just reading about it on the Wiki could make you understand it enough.

Hrm, I personally would definitely recommend the first two, especially Origins. Origins might have aged a bit, bit it has aged well IMO. It gives a wealth of lore background, as well as background to two of the biggest NPCs in Inquisition. If you like fantasy RPGs, you'll love it. DA2, while not as popular, sets the scene for the opening events of Inquisition. Including some of its DLC. It's flawed, but the protagonist is interesting and endearing, and the companions are all good in their own ways to varying degrees. Overall story was good, too.
While BioWare intended Inquisition to be friendly to newcomers (tbh it's very hard for a long time player like myself to say if it is or isn't), I personally think you would be more connected to the world and characters if you do. Love of Origins is what allows many of us to bear with some of the series's flaws...

If it's the story/lore/characters that attracts you, definitely try the other ones. They are radically different in scope/gameplay/mechanics, but Bioware's characters and stories are consistently decent, imo, so you will probably enjoy them.

This. DAO is my second fave title of this century, and DA2 has a great story and characters.

It might enhance your enjoyment of the characters to be familiar with them though. I have a link in my signature for each of my main DA protagonists. The YouTube videos linked are pretty thorough if you'd rather not spend the money.

It would give you a fuller understanding but no I wouldn't say it's necessary to play the the previous games.

Both the previous two games are great, and if you liked the characters and story, you'll probably really enjoy the previous two games. They're both pretty cheap to get, and Origins is considered one of the best RPGs ever.

I would say it is not necessary to play the previous two games. In fact, the gameplay mechanics (especially Origins) are quite clunky and slow paced. You can always watch youtube videos to see if you really do like them or you can read up the wiki instead.

You're starting with the third installment of the series?
None of them after Origins are direct sequels, so what does it matter?

Origins got me hooked. I was very new to the video game world and started playing this game that had such a fantastic story....bought all the DLC, bought DA:II. I was disappointed at first, but...DA:II grew on me, and now Kirkwall is like my home town because I know it's streets so well. Bought all the DLC for it too, don't regret it at all. And now Inquisition....can't wait for the DLCs.
Look the combat is clunky in Origins (just like the first ME was) but the story is so fantastic! And Origins and DA:II both have fantastic controversies that will keep you arguing with friends and foes for months. I say play both games. In Origins at least play each origin up to the point where the storylines converge on Ostagar. Good luck, have fun!

Except it really doesn't. If anything needs to be played, it's DA2 - Legacy. The vanilla game of DA2 would be a nice bit of background as well, but it's not necessary to understand what's going on.

I would advise playing the older games. However, if your used to more action like games, DAO might be a bit difficult for you. It is the most worshipped game of the three, and it has the most story content out of them all. DA2 is my favorite, and if u play DA2 save yourself the pain of Diplomatic Hawke, and play humerous.
Ohl, and a few tips about the forum.
Watch out for the SJW, and The warden is god-tier.

Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2 are both good games that you should be able to get in quite cheap now so I recommend them if you are intrested. However some things in them are quite different than in DAI, I'd say how the story is and how the characters are is similar. Battle in all games is quite different, you still control 4 characters though. DAI is only one with semi-open world. I'd say that DAO and DA2 have better side-quests though, less fetch quests at least.
You aren't required to play previous DA games to get into story of DAI, but if you are intrested in bigger story, DA's world and characters, they help out since DAI is continuation from previous games just with different main character. For example in DAI there is main quest where you meet Hawke and Hawke is main character of DA2. Many of the characters also appear in other games like Leliana was one of main characters in DAO and DAI both and appeared shortly in DA2.

I completely agree with what Lady Artifice says. You don't need to play the first two games to enjoy Dragon Age. But if you really enjoy the whole lore behind Dragon age then you'd have to do more then just play the games.
I'd say play the first two games to see if you enjoy the lore and if you find that you love it then try reading one or two of the books. The 3 part comic will be confusing if you don't play the first two games though. Since the three main characters are people from the first two games.
But overall just enjoy DA I, see if you like it and then decide if you wand to know more about DA and its lore.
P.S. welcome to the Dragon Age forum and feel free to message or post to any of the topics. We do have a few people who like to troll others but its kept to a minimum for the most part. So don't be afraid to ask a question just because your confused or don't understand something. People here are nice for the most part.
