The games are by no means necessary, but they do put a lot forward into setting up the world and Lore, as well as introducing you to arc characters such as Flemeth. The DLC for DA2 is also relevant to DAI.
I think DAO is still on pretty heavy sale on Origin. Don't know about Xbox Live though. To be honest I'd recommend PC for DAO if you can, mods can help makes some of it less sloggy by removing annoying animations or rescaling different schools.

None of them after Origins are direct sequels, so what does it matter?
Because Origins was the best, in my opinion.
And my opinion is right.

I think it is worthy to play the prior games, but I am biased because I like them a lot.
Sometimes, when one plays a franchise "backwards", there could be some degree of disappointment due to the high expectation generated by the first game you played in contrast to how different the other games are.

That's not really how that works, but okay.

Just want to start by saying that this is my first Dragon Age game. I grabbed it off Xbox Live honestly because it was on sale. I wanted something new to play so I decided to give this a try. Man, I am so glad I did. This game has honestly sucked me in right from the start. The story, the lore, the characters, I can't get enough. My one question is, is it necessary to play the first and second games? I found out about Dragon Age Keep and set up the stories to import into my game, but I still have my Xbox 360 so I wouldn't be opposed to playing those games. Thanks in advance for your input and to Bioware, thanks for a great game!!
Are they necessary? Not truly. Should you play them both? Absolutely.
I could sit here and tell you that one game is better than the other, which one I enjoyed, which one I didn't, etc etc but that would be a waste.
You should form your own opinion. Pick up both Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2. Let yourself into the universe of DA and come back to us with your thoughts and opinions.
Quote me when you do, I want to know how you feel. And welcome to the club, bud.

Welcome to the fandom and the forum. It isn't necessary to play the first two but it is fun, the dialogue in the first one is brilliant, then there is all of the lore to discover. Enjoy ![]()

I'm about half way done with dao again and I really thought after having voice acted protags, I'd hate my silent warden, but I hardly notice or care because the other characters and the story are just so good and make up for features we now take for granted.
So in short, yes! Highly recommended

Thank you so much to everyone for the responses. I thought I would be overwhelmed with the open world and having so much to do but I'm loving it. Everyone had great input and ideas. I appreciate it. There is really no other games I'm interested in now so after I finish my first play through, I may try as a different character. I had a feeling starting at this game was a bad move since the first two were "older" so it would feel like going backwards, but I love story driven games and the story is the main thing for me. All in all, thanks again for all the responses. I look forward to discussing more with all of you on this great franchise
Best of luck, and enjoy! We'd love to hear your thoughts.

I think you should NOT play them or you may change your opinion of Inquisition.
Tell me, how do you feel about bears...?

Not always. Many times, the first impression is what counts. Anyway, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and taste.

Both games before Inquisition are fun in my opinion, but they each have their issues.
Origins, for example, has a really slow combat system as it was designed with the tactical camera as the default mode. You don't have to use it, especially on the console which can't use it effectively, but you are essentially using Baldur's Gate combat in that game. But it does have slightly better writing and absolutely awesome characters, and in my opinion, the best romance in the series (Morrigan! strictly my opinion of course.)
It's named Origins because you get to choose one of six origin stories to play through before you get to where all stories merge and the main story progresses. Human Noble, Human Mage, Dalish Elf, City Elf, Elven Mage, Dwarven Noble and finally Dwarven Casteless. Each with their own story, and each ties into the main story in some way, with an hour or two of gameplay to help you set up your character, his/her motivations and how they became a Grey Warden.
But it has a silent protagonist with written out sentences as your responses. It doesn't hurt the game at all in my opinion, but it threw some people off, and made others demand to have it back when DA2 came out. Graphics aren't the best, but it's a nonissue if you sit back and enjoy the story, characters and such.
DA2 changed the graphic engine and is not the epic story that Origins and Inquisition is. It's a personal story. Rags to Riches where a refugee becomes a champion and you play as Hawke, the Champion of Kirkwall. Human only, but you can still choose your gender and class. It's a more intimate, personal story where Hawke isn't out to save the world, (s)he's trying to survive the madness of it and live their life in a world that is changing, and is right at the heart of the change. From dealing with Qunari hanging out in a city with growing hostilities to being right at the heart of the spark that starts the mage/templar war, seeing the absolute worst of both sides.
But the dialogue wheel is a lot of fun. Essentially three personalities are your responses that you can use to approach Hawke's dialogue, and the one you use most affects his/her auto-dialogue. A diplomatic Hawke, for instance, will be more sympathetic and understanding in party banter or what have you, and sarcastic and aggressive each add their own flavor to the game. For instance, a Hawke who is largely diplomatic can have a quest resolution that ends more peacefully, but a Hawke who is sarcastic or aggressive don't even get that dialogue option, whereas the aggressive Hawke can actually spur a tal-vashoth to fight his former comrades while sarcastic and diplomatic cannot.
It also has some great characters, and each romanceable character is bisexual, except for Sebastian who is straight, so pretty much out of four romance options, all four are available.
Its downsides are the repeated environment and highly rushed ending due to a short development period. But it does do an excellent job setting up the world state of Inquisition and is worth playing at least once.
