Dragon Age Inquisition was named GOTY by SXSW (South by Southwest). Shadows of Mordor was also a big winner. So congratulations to both companies along with the other winners.

dont think it deserved it but
congrats bioware
How many GotY's are there, and why are people still giving them out in the middle of March?
A surprising amount. DAI has got well over two hundred at this point, and I certainly had no idea there were that man organisations and web sites giving them out.
Where do you get the 200 awards figure from? GotY Picks has DAI at 133 awards, but it doesn't have SXSW, so it could be a couple behind.A surprising amount. DAI has got well over two hundred at this point, and I certainly had no idea there were that man organisations and web sites giving them out.
Imagine if more organizations than just the Academy gave Best Picture awards...

Game of the financial year perhaps?

SXSW's biggest convention meets in March of every year. So the awards are given out at that convention.

A well earned reward.
Let the awards come. So too more hate. More rage. Moar. ![]()

Can't tell if you're serious or not.
In case anyone's curious, there's BAFTA (British), Ceaser (French), SAG, the Golden Globes, and the BFCA (now Critic's Choice Award).
Don't understand the hate, it's not like it won best game of all time. How many really good and involving games come out in an average year? Three? Five?
Imagine if more organizations than just the Academy gave Best Picture awards...
Well there is the Golden Globes..... and the Actor's Guild awards. BAFTA awards, the Genie Awards, the AFI Awards, the NSFC Awards...... wel I can go on if you want me to ![]()

They do.
The BAFTA's (the British Film Academy)
MTV movie awards
Nickelodeon Film Awards
The Golden Globes
To name but a few.
If you goggle Film Awards you will find hundreds of different film awards given by different magazines channels or industry organisations.
It's a good thing there were three of you guys and gals ready to correct sarcasm. Maybe I should have worded it differently: The fact that so many different groups hand out so many different "Game of the Year" awards kind of devalues them all.

Sorry my Sarcasm detector doesn't work well on forums. I just keep getting "Not sure if serious..... so just assume yes as that is what everyone else will do".
Well it's not like it had much competition lmao

There were some exceptional indie games in 2014, but for some reason only AAA's are eligible for GotY awards, so they missed out.
The Walking Dead won less than 3 years ago. I'd hardly consider an episodic adventure game developed, and self-published by Telltale a triple A game. Actually, that self-published aspect really makes it hit home.
Divinity: Original Sin should have won the awards. It was better than Inquisition, Shadow of Mordor or the other AAA action games. But I guess winner is where the most money comes from.

Really? The opposite seems more logical. The fact that so many gives them out means a game needs to win a majority of them (as DAI has for 2014) to actually have the bragging rights. I'd also say it makes being the "grand winner" so to speak MUCH more valuable, than having won one or two big awards out of a handful. You can say an Oscar or Grammy win was corrupt/bought/based on inside politics/a mistake and an upset that will be laughed at years later... Much harder to say about a game winning GOTY from 100-400 different companies. Well I'm sure some among us will still maintain that Bioware bribed every single publication who gave DAI top honors + every individual blog and so on, but that's just BSN.
