Nintendo has long resisted the call of mobile gaming, but today it entered the space in a big way. The company has announced that it will team up with DeNA, a major Japanese mobile gaming company, to make smartphone games featuring Nintendo characters. The two companies "intend to jointly operate new gaming applications featuring Nintendo IP, which they will develop specifically for smart devices," Nintendo said in a statement.

Nintendo and DeNA will also develop a cross-platform service that runs across smartphones, tablets, PCs, and Nintendo's own devices; this is set to launch in fall of this year. Nintendo is taking a 10 percent stake in DeNA, while DeNA is buying 1.24 percent of Nintendo.

Well given the failure of the WiiU and the contracting handheld market they had to do something to get more revenue streams.

What's the matter? For the low price of five dollars Mr. Iwata can provide you with that last Pokeball you so need!

Well all I know is that they better not abandon the Wii-U before they finish Shin Megemi Tensei x Fire Emblem.

I'm curious as to what their new system (The NX) is going to be. I wonder if they are going to abandon the Wii-U or if they are making a new handheld or tablet like device for games? They need to stop this gimmick nonsense and get back to making great games like they did with the Gamecube. Maybe NX stands for Nintendo 10? Doesn't really make sense, but then neither did Xbox 360 or One.

I expect the NeXt (if that's the actual name i would not be suprised) to not come out for a few years. I feel like they only announced it so people wouldn't get too scared by all the mobile talk.

In retrospect, Nintendo are the only ones who are still making great games -- I mean, they were they only ones willing to fund Platinum for an awesome game like Bayonetta 2. There's a lot of good games on the 3DS as well, while Sony & Microsoft are basically doing what Nintendo did with the Wii -- Faffing about with stupid gimmicks and irritating social media mechanics as opposed to a strong third party support like the days of the PS2. Nintendo might have been busy releasing basically the same Zelda or Mario games lately, but they know where their priorities should be. At the games. That much I can give them at least.

I disagree that Nintendo are the only ones still making great games, but I might just be picky. I've got 3 games on the Wii that I enjoy: Super Paper Mario, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Star Wars: The Clone Wars Lightsaber duels, out of all those I own, I think it was 8. I had played a bit of Super Mario Galaxies with a friend, but I didn't care for it too much. Simcity Wii (don't remember exact title), Super Mario Super Strikers, Pokemon Battle Revolution and some others that I own that I can't even remember were just let downs.

In retrospect the Xbox 360 had Condemned, Fable, Halo, Left 4 Dead, The Witcher 2, and Saint's Row.

While the Playstation 3 had things like Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn, Dynasty Warriors 7: Empires, Heavy Rain, Uncharted, and The Last of Us.

Both the 360 and Playstation 3 contained many third party games that I love and couldn't get on the Wii: Fallout, Fallout: New Vegas, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Grand Theft Auto V, and The Batman Arkham games just to name a few (I've over a hundred games on the 360, I'm not exaggerating, last inventory I believe I was at 118. The Wii cannot hold a candle to that).

As for the 3DS only four games have caught my interest and I own all of them: Pokemon X, Pokemon Y, Pokemon Omega Ruby, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire (I enjoy all of them).

I have played the new Super Smash Bros. on the Wii-U at a friends house, if I owned a Wii-U it, Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2 are the only games that spring to mind as games I'd want, with the possible inclusion of the upcoming Zelda and upcoming Star Fox game.

The Xbox One has Dead Rising, Titanfall, and Forza Motorsport 5.

The Playstation 4 has Killzone: Shadow Fall.

The both of them have Shadows of Mordor, Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires and Destiny.

To be fair, current generation sucks all around so far, at least in my opinion. I know there are more exclusives out there, but I am just going by what I've played and enjoyed, and I don't like to consider games that are to be released because anything could happen. I just consider the Wii-U to be the weakest investment for those reasons, but you might find it to be the best investment because it has more games that interests you.

Wii U isn't failure. They're still making a profit off of it, correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe it's doing bad in comparison to the other consoles, but the 3DS is making a killing, so there's that.

Anyway, this was a good move on Nintendo's part.

Note that the Wii-U is counted as current gen and that was generally what my statement was directed towards. Current gen anyway. It's not even a secret that Microsoft and Sony has been busy faffing about with gimmicks and social media bullocks, judging from the fairly weak line up so far in comparison to Nintendo, and each E3 lately has essentially been a dick-waving competition between both parts. Microsoft declaring the Boner an always online machine at first on E3 back in 2013, then Sony enters the stage to declare the opposite to win some easy points instead of winning people over with actual good exclusives.. What have they got to show for it so far? The Order 1886? Dead Rising 3 is Capcom's attempt at catching the Call of Duty crowd by attempting to make the silly nonsense that is Dead Rising into some sort of gritty realism parade with Dead Rising 3, unlike the previous games that essentially embraced the whackiness. Destiny, as far as I recall, is regarded as a let-down in regards to what it was promised to be and so was Titanfall. Mind you, that's just speaking generally, not to say that one can't have derived some sort of enjoyment from either titles but it was relevant to mention in regards to this particular discussion at least.

As for the PS3 and X360 -- Admittedly, I don't recall many games from that generation that made me gasp in awe. None that were quite as grand as that of the PS2 or the Gamecube era. Were I to mention my favorite games of all time they'd mostly be from the PS2-era, a bit earlier than the release of the 360. Although a lot of games i love were released in 7th(?) generation of consoles sure but I can't say it was particularly awe-inspiring as the previous one, as I find myself playing a lot of older games lately, mostly on the PC. To be fair though -- I'd have to sit down and do a lot of thinking to name my favorite titles.

As for Nintendo -- They have Persona Q, Fire Emblem Awakening, Monster Hunter 3 & 4, Bayonetta 2, Bravely Default, Smash Bros is always good and few other great titles, though admittedly, mostly on the 3DS.

But, basically, the assessment I was trying to reach is that by comparison, Nintendo are still the only ones who seem to care about making games. One could simply also take a look at how they've handled their latest E3 conferences, they've basically skipped all the self-congratulary nonsense and went into the game presentations, with their "Nintendo Direct". That is something I feel they should be applauded for at least.

While the Wii U isn't doing as badly as others say, you gotta feel bad for the console.

The Wii-U lacked titles like Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, unique third-party titles that would bring in the crowd, essentially their equivalent of Shadow of the Colossus from the PS2 era. Although, it did actually have most of the things that people wanted from Sony and Microsoft but even that wasn't enough as mentioned by Mr. Obvious above. The Gamecube also had the unique take on Mario in the form of Paper Mario, Resident Evil 4, a Metal Gear Solid remake, plus it had the best controller in existence. They are going strong with the 3DS though, something which Sony could learn from them, so perhaps they can realize that they actually have a pretty neat little console called the Vita with backwards compatibility for PSONE games that severely lack unique titles beyond Persona 4 Golden to make it a best seller.

"Backwards compatibility" Okay we can play Skyward Sword on the Wii U but why would we ever want to replay Skyward Sword to begin with?

"no DRM" Just like the PS4 and post-180 Xbone, great!

"free online" In this case you get what you pay for and Nintendo's infrastructure is abysmal.

"can play used games" As can the PS4 and Xbone, so what?

"support for Indie devs" The PS4 has much better indie support.

"cheap" It's only 100 dollars less than a PS4, a far more powerful console with a competent online network and which is guaranteed every AAA multiplat for the rest of this generation, great indie support, core-friendly heavy hitters from Naughty Dog and the rest of Sony's stable, and the juggernaut sports titles.

"great first party lineup" Not in the launch year.

"still ignored" Well yeah. It's a 300 dollar Xbox 360 with a Fisher Price tablet gimmick no one wants, terrible online, minimal to non-existent third party support, and massive game droughts.

Ah, I gotcha, I agree with this. The whole self-ego stroking that Sony and Microsoft have been doing at E3 does get on my nerves, I've actually considered not tuning into this years E3 (been watching since 08), with the Bethesda press conference being the possible exception. I got so bored watching last years and 2013's E3.

I chalk up our differing opinions as to us having different tastes, so I don't think one of us will really end up agreeing with the other. I don't consider it a bad thing though, more variety is always good. When it comes to brass tacks: I just don't find the Wii-U appealing, at least at this current time, because its catalog doesn't have enough games that interest me thus does not warrant a purchase in my eyes. That's why I made the statement about wishing they'd go back to how things were with the Gamecube, because it was the last console that they made that I found appealing, its catalog of games were impressive to me.

Yeah, I know that the Wii-U is current generation and consider it as such. In my last post I divided things off by starting out with last gen and then moving into current gen by starting with the 3DS, I should have stated it in my post.  :) I just listed off all of those games in an attempt to illustrate my feelings as to why I didn't view the Wii or the Wii-U as a good investment for me. It frustrates me because I want Nintendo to grab my interest, the first console I ever bought was a Nintendo 64 for $137, so that makes them special to me.

You can pre-order the NX now (even though we don't know what it is or the price):

Ah mobile gaming, the present "state of the industry" that is also a sign of the approaching end times.
