I've retired my Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 a while back now but found myself missing Mass Effect. The games deserve to last longer then the consoles they were released on, after all. And, so, I purchased Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 on Steam and was looking forward to playing my way through the campaigns again before eventually buying Mass Effect 3 for PC and importing them. I was really excited, especially since my GTX 970 is vastly more powerful than the last generation of consoles.
And I just discovered that the PC versions of the game lack controller support. Hell, it's been years and they still haven't added it in with a patch. Not all PC gamers enjoy using a keyboard and mouse. I know I loath the things and would rather sit back and enjoy a game without having to hunch over a keyboard. I don't want to be reminded of typing up a Facebook post when I'm trying to play a game.
And, so, I'm getting my money back from Steam. I'm extremely disappointed as this means that the first 3 Mass Effect games are basically gone, made obsolete with the last generation of consoles. The PC versions should have provided longevity to the games but, due to Bioware's inexplicable hubris in mandating *how* games must be played, any enjoyment that may have been had is gone. Nobody wants to play a game that is a *chore* to play, and fumbling with a k/m, for me, is worse than a chore.
I doubt Bioware will correct this problem, or it would have been corrected ages ago (do they really value their customers' opinions so poorly?), but the next Mass Effect should at least correct this problem. There are some of us, especially old school gamers who began playing games with Pong and working up through the years to Atari, who prefer to use a controller when playing a game, but who also own powerful and functional PCs (and who use their keyboards for typing, not gaming). You shouldn't gimp your game right off the bat by forcing your customers to give up choices. Mass Effect should have lasted longer than the last generation of consoles and it's too bad it didn't.
Hell, with the demise of the last generation of consoles it stood to reason that there were going to be customers who have only ever experienced your games on console. It is short sighted to not make it as easy as possible for those customers to move up to PC by allowing them to use a controller, as they are used to. PC gaming is the best, by far, and consoles can't come close, but keyboards and mice are just input devices and not integral to that experience, especially when the old 360 controller is basically a part of Windows. I mean, most Indie devs provide controller support, it's just disappointing to realize that Bioware has chosen to remove it.
Bioware, going forward, give your players options instead of taking them away.
