Games Should Last Beyond a Console's Lifespan

I've retired my Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 a while back now but found myself missing Mass Effect. The games deserve to last longer then the consoles they were released on, after all. And, so, I purchased Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 on Steam and was looking forward to playing my way through the campaigns again before eventually buying Mass Effect 3 for PC and importing them. I was really excited, especially since my GTX 970 is vastly more powerful than the last generation of consoles.

And I just discovered that the PC versions of the game lack controller support. Hell, it's been years and they still haven't added it in with a patch. Not all PC gamers enjoy using a keyboard and mouse. I know I loath the things and would rather sit back and enjoy a game without having to hunch over a keyboard. I don't want to be reminded of typing up a Facebook post when I'm trying to play a game.

And, so, I'm getting my money back from Steam. I'm extremely disappointed as this means that the first 3 Mass Effect games are basically gone, made obsolete with the last generation of consoles. The PC versions should have provided longevity to the games but, due to Bioware's inexplicable hubris in mandating *how* games must be played, any enjoyment that may have been had is gone. Nobody wants to play a game that is a *chore* to play, and fumbling with a k/m, for me, is worse than a chore.

I doubt Bioware will correct this problem, or it would have been corrected ages ago (do they really value their customers' opinions so poorly?), but the next Mass Effect should at least correct this problem. There are some of us, especially old school gamers who began playing games with Pong and working up through the years to Atari, who prefer to use a controller when playing a game, but who also own powerful and functional PCs (and who use their keyboards for typing, not gaming). You shouldn't gimp your game right off the bat by forcing your customers to give up choices. Mass Effect should have lasted longer than the last generation of consoles and it's too bad it didn't.

Hell, with the demise of the last generation of consoles it stood to reason that there were going to be customers who have only ever experienced your games on console. It is short sighted to not make it as easy as possible for those customers to move up to PC by allowing them to use a controller, as they are used to. PC gaming is the best, by far, and consoles can't come close, but keyboards and mice are just input devices and not integral to that experience, especially when the old 360 controller is basically a part of Windows. I mean, most Indie devs provide controller support, it's just disappointing to realize that Bioware has chosen to remove it.

Bioware, going forward, give your players options instead of taking them away.

Perhaps if Mass Effect was a Nintendo IP. I have a feeling that once the new IP launches it's either the final nail in the coffin for Bioware on my part or it will bring back that same awe I had when I first played the first two Mass Effect games and how awesome "Next gen" really was.

Chances are I'll look back at Mass Effect and DA once the new IP is out and go "wow, they are so oldschool now" in almost every aspect or I will sigh at the realization that the new IP is just more of the same kind of stuff or it's a failure and Bioware no longer gives me that breath of fresh air they used to in gaming in general.

I agree they should allow you to play the game on PC minus one of the biggest improvements that the system provides.

Still if people can largely adjust to to DAI's crap mouse and keyboard controls you can adjust to Mass Effect's mostly good ones.  Omni button aside of course.

Excuse me but why is your dislike of Pc controls Bioware's problem? You could have kept your last gen consoles if it was important to you but i am sure you have legitimate reasons to get rid of it. But remember it was YOUR choice to do so. The consequence of your choices are not for Bioware to mitigate they are yours to bare alone. Suck it up.

I am one of those that went from 360 to PC... AND I am a southpaw keyboard user... (using direction arrows and num pad) I will say that if I had to go back to the xbox, I would have problems.... I played through single player on xbox several times, but when I switched to PC, the game simply felt better... Combat became smoother and I didn't have to open a menu every time I wanted to do something.... A controller gamer wouldn't be able to compete with a keyboard/mouse simply because controller isn't as fluid, and mouse is more precise... Now, it DOES take getting used to and I would advise you to go through a single player playthrough on easier difficulties before hardcore and multiplayer...

ALSO... DON'T be afraid to completely redo your keybindings, I had to several times before I got to a set I liked.
