Well, I'm unhealthily obsessed with names and so I'm curious, what did you name your Inquisitors (and/or Wardens and Hawkes if you like)? How did and do you choose their names? Do they have a meaning?

My Lavellan is named Sulahna. Sulahn means sing in elvish, and I imagined that maybe her mother was the Hahren of the clan and enjoyed singing tales of old or something, and thus named her daughter so.

My Trevelyan is called Robin because Robin Hood was my main source of inspirtation for him.

My Cousland is Guinevere because I liked the Alistair+Warden/Morrigan+child relationship and it reminded me a lot of the Arthurian legend.

My lady Hawke is Valerie because I thought Valerie Hawke sounded incredibly badass and the name fit with those of her siblings and dude Hawke remained Garrett because Garrett is sexy.

I have tons more but that shall be it for now.

So, anyone out there who wants to share their characters' names (and maybe the story behind them)?

Owyn Trevelyan.. I was just saying in another thread that I've kind of warmed up to the default though.

Raina Lavellan... but I've barely played her.

Hawke is just Marian/default. I've got too many Wardens to list.

Erm...
Dude Lavellan: Default name, Mahanon, because I forgot to change it to Bruce. I always name the first character I create for DA games Bruce.
Dude Trevelyan: Eric - first name to pop into my head
Lady Lavellan 1: Artemis - first name to pop into my head
Lady Trevelyan: Brengronzola, but lovingly referred to as "CullenWife". I asked my friends what I should name her and I was given three different names: Brenda, Gronkowski, and Gorgonzola (that friend was hungry), so I smashed them all together.
Lady Adaar: Bruiser (I think, I don't remember) because she likes to hit people.
Lady Lavellan 2: Aislann - It was the second word that word prediction gave me after I typed 'A'.

Hmm I don't know why but every single Human female characters I have get a 50% chance of being named Elena. I just love that name... my Elena(s) so far:

Warden Elena Cousland

Champion Elena Hawke

Inquisitor Elena Trevelyan

and no they're not on the same worldstate... even if I'm very tempted to make an "Elena" worldstate...

Beside that I also have characters with these names;

- Celeste Amell (warden). I love the name Celeste since I love the sky

- Gareth Hawke (standard male hawke name, but with my preferred spelling)

- Luthiel Lavellan (Inquisitor). I just love a Tolkien-style name for elfs

- Anaïr Mahariel (Warden). Another Tolkien-style name for Dalish elfs

All my characters are male, so far

In DAO:

Ithil (Moon - Sindarin, Tolkien Elvish), Dalish Warrior (in process, just starting out)

Jade (Named after his eyes ::Shrugs::) City Elf Rogue  (completed)

Lyrian (made-up based off of lyrical) Mage (completed)

Angus (sounded good with Fergus), Human Warrior (in process - at the Landsmeet)

DA2

Fallon (diplomatic)(made-up, phonetically based off of ... yes, I was being silly and didn't think I would stick with him, so there it is) Mage (completed)

Donovan Rogue (sarcastic)  (I like the name for a rogue) (completed)

Justin  Warrior (aggressive) (Justin was a very volatile, black and white kind of person, demanding justice, so I thought it fit.  He also ended up having to kill his lover, because it was right, in his opinion, and became Viscount of Kirkwall) (completed)

DAI

Kiri Dalish Mage (from my anime influence) (completed)

Fen Dalish Rogue, bow (nearing final battle, from the DA Elvish dictionary, meaning wolf)

A'tisha Sulahn male Dalish Mage (begining, from the DA Elvish dictionary, meaning Song of Peace or Peaceful Song)

Laurent Human Rogue, dual wield, sounded suitably noble with a hint of Orlais, later found out there was a character in DAI: Duke Laurent de Ghislain,

Kaaras - Qunari, 2h (near the middle)

I have dozens of other characters, but these are the ones that have made or will make it through end game in the near future.  :)

I usually design the character first and then i start looking for names that 'feel' right for the head canon I have for my character. I'll use my Japanese or Tolkien dictionaries, the DA Elven Dictionary online, and sometimes just sift through naming conventions used throughout history.

Most times I probably spend way too much time deciding on a name.  I blame my writing background.  :)

I have eight Heroes of Ferelden, two Orlesian Wardens, eight Hawkes and three Inquisitors so far. So let's just stick to the Inquisitors, or this will get crazy long.

Kathlin Cadash: Made up name that I thought it sounded nice with Cadash.

Talan Adaar: Talan means 'truth' in Qunlat. I like to think his parents named him Adaar, and Talan is the name he chose for himself.

Eunice Trevelyan:  I wanted Trevelyan to have an old-fashioned English name to reflect her noble roots.

Future Inquisitors I currently have planned: Vaderyn Lavellan, Angrimm Cadash, Ataashi Adaar, Norah Trevelyan and Carathir Lavellan. Following the formula of 'invented names for elves and dwarves, words in Qunlat for qunari and English names for humans.'

My canon character names are in my signature.

I was looking through a list of welsh names when I was naming my Mahariel. I found one whose sound and meaning I liked (Emrys, evidently part of the welsh name for Ambrosius Aurelianus, a Romano-British military leader that fought the Saxons when they invaded. I like my early British history, and I felt there was a degree of parallel with the Dales. Ambrosius in turn means "immortal", which is part of what the Dalish Hope to restore, isn't it?), changed the ending to something a little more Elven sounding and that's how he got the name Emrien.

Alys is a medieval form of Alice, which apparently means "of noble sort". It seemed appropriate for my Hawke, being a disenfranchised noble to start with. I'm also a fan of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and American McGee's Alice, so take that for what it's worth.

Riona was the result of my perusing a list of Irish names in search of something that sounded pleasing to my ears but unlike something the Andrastian humans would come up with. It apparently comes from Irish Gaelic Rionach, which means "queenly".

Wardens:

Shannon Tabris - because I like that name.
Vraïwen Mahariel - I wanted a Tolkien elf style name and I made it up.
Helena Cousland - I like it and it's the name of one of my cousins.

Hawkes:

Marian Hawke: I never pick up the default name, but this one I like.
Claudia: because I love that name.
Eileen: I wanted and Irish sounding name and I could only remember that one :D

Inquisitors:

Laure Trevelyan: the name of another of my cousins. Ah, Mediterranean extended family.
Gwynn Lavellan: I wanted a Welsh name that wasn't too long but I didn't feel like looking for one, so I kind of made it up, I think it does exist though.
Ahyoka Lavellan: I wanted a Native American name and found that Ahyoka is Cherokee for "she brought happiness". I don't know if it's accurate, but I really like the sound and idea of it.

My Warden: Siha Maharial, I'm a really big fan of Thane in ME and loved it when he would call my Shep Siha.

My Champion of Kirkwall: Alexa Hawke, a feminine version of Alexander which means "defender of men" which suited her as a defender of oppressed mages.

My Inquisitors (so far): Teryn Cadash, I wasn't able to remember what I wanted to name him originally but then I thought it would be great for a carta thug to be named after a Ferelden noble title.
Issala Adaar, I was looking through the Qunari language back when it was first announced that we could play as one and Issala (means dust) just stood out for me.

Glynn Mahariel - Logan Hawke - Gryff Lavellan

I like elven heroes with strong G names, after Garahel. Elven tends to avoid hard sounds like that I know, but I don't mind.

Hawke is named for Logan Shepard (my Mass Effect PC) who in turn is named after Wolverine.

They are all female.

My canon warden was Ariana Cousland.  Well before that tartlet Ariana Grande came into fashion.  Hawke stayed Marion Hawke. She had her own personality and I felt it unfair to change her by changing her name. I haven't decided which of my Inquisitors are going to be my canon.  Current one is Caitlyn Trevelyan. I left my male Trevelyan as Maxwell.  I liked the name he defaulted with. I also left my elf with her default name. But I'm not really into elfy lore and whatnot, so didn't bother with an elfy name change.

I usually leave the default name

So Aedan Cousland (I love this name seriously)

and Garett Hawke

the only one that bothers me is Maxwell. It just doesn't sound Dragon Age-ish

DAO:

Raven Cousland: Raven, black and sinister bird, I made him look quite rough and with black hair obviously, he had quite uncaring and aggressive personality.

Wunther Tabris: Seriously.. no idea. I still question myself.

Catrine Cousland: Name that fits to Ferelden noble, meaning would be "pure" for that, but doesn't really fit her since she's very apathetic and selfish. Well, I guess you can be "pure" in many ways.

Juhana Cousland: It's finnish name of Swedish prince that ruled Finland one point and poisoned his brother who was king and was made of king after killing him. I really like the name and wanted to use it, and it's pretty noble name after all.

... I don't really have any bias towards human noble origin although it appears like that XD

DA2:

Ania Hawke: I randomly come up with it myself when thinking of names. It's Polish/Russian name though and means "favor, grace". She's quite optimistic and friendly woman, so I guess it fits. Sometimes her favors and trusting people doesn't end that well though like with Anders ^^;

Niall Hawke:  There is character called Niall in DAO, but I didn't remember him when thinking of Niall. Niall simply means "champion" and it obviously fits as Hawke's name. I did get him killed in DAI though.

Kayla Hawke: I was looking names in internet and I think this was just what I ended up with. It means "wood" which doesn't tell anything about Kayla. But I think it's pretty name for my aggressive assassin.

DAI:

Milica Trevelyan: Given name of my favorite actor Milla Jovovich. Milla would have been too akward, since it's my own name as well so I used Milica instead and it's great name.

Skye Adaar: I have this headcanon of Tal-Vashoths not liking to name themselves with qunari names, but since they aren't used to real names either, they just pick something concrete and something that describes themselves. Skye has blue eyes that aren't usual eye color for qunaris and was named after them.

Brigitte Cadash: Since the place is Orlais, I thought that her carta also worked in Orlais and she was given French name. Little too pompous in her mind. Means "strenght" which is nice. Basically I was looking for pompous-sounding French name online ^^; Brigitte wasn't most pompous I found obviously, but it's nice one.

I just pick names I think sound well with the surnames (although I do try to follow an ethnic flavor; i.e., Fereldens are given British names).

I am not the best with names. I searched and struggled within the deepest recesses of my mind to find mine.

What is the tradition when it comes to naming characters in role playing games?

Most default state:

Rosemonde Cousland - The name is partially derived from the germanic mund which means protector. It's influenced by the latin rosa munda meaning "pure rose," which comes in handy for extra resonance when Alistair gives her a certain token of his affection. The name also sounds more Orlesian than Ferelden, which is in consideration of Bryce and Eleanor Cousland's relative tolerance for Orlesian culture in comparison to most Ferelden nobles (I like to imagine Howe sneering over that in private). I also think it sounds Regal, and appropriate since she's my Queen Cousland.

Juliette Hawke is just because I think it's a pretty name. It used to be Vivien, but then a certain character was revealed.

Angelique Trevelyan, also because it's pretty, continues the theme of names with a French Orlesian origin, and I intended some irony in that she looks very angelic to me in appearance, but she's very, very willing to be unlawful/"chaotic good".
