DAI:

For my elven characters I took a root word, and then added a suffix already established by other NPC elves in the DA universe.

Erawen Lavellan (era means story, tale, dream, also refers to mage and the Fade): KE-mage

Revasanni Lavellan (revas means freedom): rogue, perfect name for Solasmance where the elven inquisitor learns the truth about elven history and is "freed" from ignorance of Dalish elves.

Mihris Lavellan (there's another character called Mihris in DAI, just copied this one)

Qunari:

Moya Adaar (named her after the ship in Farscape.)

Diamond Adaar (diamond is hard, solid but can be stunning; this character is a very fair qunari but she she is stubborn and vengeful.)

Dwarf:

Helga (because Bianca said dwarf ladies are either named Bianca or Helga)

Human (humans stink and are very ugly):

Ser Sheldon Willoughby Trevelyan VIII (a geeky name for a geeky human)

Myrtle Cornelia Trevelyan (an equally geeky name for a geeky human)

Canon World State:

Rayne Amell: Rayne has been a name I have loved since I was 16. I always told myself that I would name my first girl Summer Rayne. But being married with a different surname now, it... just doesn't work. Let's put it that way. So, I gave my canon Warden Rayne. Full name: Rayne Sydney Amell

Vector Hawke: Vector is a name I got from my time playing SWOTR, he was an Imperial companion for the Imperial Agent class, made into a hybrid Killik and was the romance of my Imperial Agent. Truth be told, it was a toss up between Vector or Malavai(another SWTOR companion, but for the Sith Warrior), but Malavai didn't work as well imo.

Alec Trevelyan: A character from 007's Golden Eye, as played by Sean Bean. I remembered when seeing the surname for the human Inquisitor that that was the same surname as the villain in Golden Eye. Plus, love Sean Bean. Unfortunately this probably means Alec is going to die in some horrible way...

Any other character I have created all have names of greek gods/deities. I have a love for greek mythology. This is something I've done since my World of Warcraft days, all my characters were named likewise (except my two mains). I do have two Inquisitors who didn't follow this.

Keilo Lavellan: Keilo means "Lily of the Valley". A sweet scented, poisonous woodland flower. I really liked this for my first elf.

Sirona Trevelyan: Sirona is the Celtic goddess of healing. So her name almost follows the tradition. I thought it was an apt name for a female mage, even if we didn't get to be healers this time around *grumble*

I'm just sticking with my current playthrough but there aren't really any meanings to the names as I usually pick mine at random

My warden is Ben Amell a Human male mage

My Hawke's first name was Jennifer a beautiful blonde female mage who kicked ass for a living

My inquisitor I called Topaz Lavellan mostly because I noticed that elves have very Vulcan sounding type names in DA and by Vulcan I mean Star Trek type names so decided to go with something like that for mine which is my current active playthrough. Like the warden and Hawke she is a mage too. Unlike Hawke and the warden though she's an elf rather than human

Humans:

Arthyen Trevelyan (Male Archer Rogue)

Caswyn Trevelywn (Male Knight Enchanter Mage)

I gave them similar names because in my headcanon they are brothers (one brought up among nobility, the other brought up in the Ostwick Circle). As for the naming conventions if I'm not mistaken they are Cornish names.

Elves:

Levana Lavellan (Female Weapon and Shield Warrior)

Gareth Lavellan (Male Necromancer Mage)

Levana is the feminine Hebrew form of Laban, meaning 'white' (if I'm not mistaken, please correct me if otherwise). Considering she's a templar and converted Andrastian, I can see how it translates to 'white/holy light' or 'warrior of light'.

Gareth is a Welsh name, and most of the Dalish have Welsh/Celtic names. It was either going to be that or Aeron.

Dwarves:

Nika Cadash (Female Dual Wield Rogue)

Gilda Cadash (Female Two Hand Warrior)

Neither really have any symbolism or meaning attached. I knew I wanted a dwarven female rogue named Nika as one of my characters while Gilda was a 'spur of the moment' character.

Qunari:

Jade Adaar (Female Pyromancer Mage)

Her actual name is Asaara (Wind) but she goes by Jade due to her unique eye color (her outer irises are violet but inner are green, which is where her nickname came up).

1) Evelyn  (no imagination there and when someone brought up her name, I wondered who Evelyn was before I realized they were talking about my PC)

2) Maxwell

3) forgot  (too lazy to go look it up)

4) Joshua

5) Betina (because she's a patch 5 beta character)

6) PatsyBSix (for beta test patch 6)

I'm always forgetting what I name my PCs and then if they get mentioned in the game, I can't figure out who is being talked about at first. Oops  :P

I find it very hard to pick names.

A name is not just a phone number. I must have a meaning. My characters are personal and should reflect things I value.

Lately I have used the name 'Europa'.

I started over again with Dragon Age Origins. This time as a mage. An elven mage even. I named her 'Europa'.

According the ancient greek mythology she was a phoenician noble woman. Her name would be connected with terms as 'the intelligent' or 'open-minded' which fits well for a mage. It's a proud name with many depths.

Zeus abducted Europa and she gave birth to three children. Later she married king Asterios. Europa's earliest appearence was in the Iliad by Homer around 800 BC.

The continent Europe is named after her.

Eh, most of the names I've given my characters have just been random names that popped into my head.

Most of my Inquisitors have gotten names of characters from Game of Thrones (Bran, Bronn, Brienne, Arya, etc.).

I named my m!Adaar Niyaz, after, well, Niyaz, and when I Googled it later, found:

Niyaz

People with this name have a deep inner desire to use their abilities in leadership, and to have personal independence. They would rather focus on large, important issues, and delegate the details.

People with this name tend to be creative and excellent at expressing themselves. They are drawn to the arts, and often enjoy life immensely. They are often the center of attention, and enjoy careers that put them in the limelight. They tend to become involved in many different activities, and are sometimes reckless with both their energies and with money.

Seemed fitting for an Inquisitor, I think. ;)

Thanks for the comments, it's interesting to read!

Gonna drop a few more.

I choose a lot of names based on people/characters I like, but they still need to fit into ingame lore.

Viggo Cadash got his name from Viggo Mortensen

Lorena Trevelyan - Loreena McKennitt

Maven Cadash - Maven Blackbriar from Skyrim (well she was kind of a blitch, but her name is nice)

Medea Amell - Medea from the film Medea

For DA elves I try to make names out of elvish words and/or syllables from npc elf names

Iloras Lavellan

Sylwen Lavellan

Nelya Mahariel

Ashanni Surana

Mihriel Tabris

For DA dwarves I go with names that sound Norse-y

Maya Brosca

Kalryn Aeducan

Snorri Aeducan

And my two Qunari have qunlat names

Asaara - wind

Aban - sea

Reno Surana. I really like that name for some reason, and it has a good flow with 'Surana'. I got it from a Final Fantasy character, but I just googled it, and apparently it's a US city, known as "The Biggest Little City in the World". Since Reno's the most important little elf in Thedas, I guess it kind of suits her. Plus, she'd be down for some gambling.

Alyssa Hawke. It's just a pretty name, and since the rest of the family has a normal name (except Carver and his special reasons), I figured she would too. I think it's kind of regal-sounding too, which suits how haughty she is. Got that one from a Resident Evil character.

Rhiannon Lavellan / Anjali Adaar / Nico Cadash / Elariel Lavellan / Zidane Trevelyan. I haven't decided which is my favourite yet. Might be someone I've not played yet! They were all named just because I like how those names sound. 'Rhiannon' was a floor name in Corypheus' Legacy prison, so it's kind of funny. I do have a male Lavellan called 'Mahvir', which means 'tomorrow' in elfy. He's the kind of Dalish who looks to the future, not the past, so it suits him.  ^_^

(Canon) Elven Mage: Lethaya Lavellan

[lath meaning love, a root in words like Lethallin, or clansmen]

Human Rogue: Helena Trevelyan

[Helena meaning shining light or bright one]

Qunari Mage: Asala Adaar

[asala meaning soul, and a reference back to Sten <3]

Besides the Quizzy's, my canon Warden is Leonora, given the name means compassion or light and is a variation of Eleanor, which I thought was nice as she's a Cousland. I have three Hawkes I care about, all of which I picked pretty traditional names for since that seemed to fit the Hawke family MO - Malcolm, Marian, Bethany, etc. (Canon) Rouge is Allison, Mage is Morgan, and Warrior is Lillith.

I have many many characters in all of the three games, so I'll just list the ones that pop into my mind first.

Eva Cousland - If I ever get a daughter of my own one day, I want to name her Eva. I like the names simplicity and and the way it sounds when pronounced in other languages as well as my own. So, I guess with her it was just that I liked the name?
Sansa Cousland - I had just begun my adventure into the world of Game Of Thrones and loved Sansa's character. Also, when Alistair yells "Attack" as his battle cry, I sometimes mishear it as him yelling "Sansa" and I thought it was supercute in that playthrough.

Andrea Hawke - Andrea was the name of my first Shepard and she was one helluva lady. That name sounds strong to me. Though, in DA2, I like the default names so I use them quite often.

After getting the Inquisition I came to a decision that once I leave my hometown and move to the other side of the country, I'll start using my middlename as my favored name. Since that decision, I've made quite a lot of Inquisitors that have some version of my name, since it being a Finnish name I don't see it fitting into the game's world as it is. For example, I have Katarina and Katerine Lavellan and Rina Trevelyan. I may be self-centered, but I just want to get used to seeing the name that I have only seen so far only in official documents and such.

Let's see.

Elves

Valenne Mahariel

Mhila Lavellan (fun fact: the pronunciation (Mee-la) translates to 'mile' in my native language)

Dwarves

Berin Aeducan

Karon Cadash (some Greek mythology influence here)

Humans

Haelynn Amell

Haewar Cousland

Erik Hawke (Erik the Red was kind of the inspiration for this name)

Lucius Hawke

Natalie Hawke (I thought her face resembled Natalie Portman)

Sylvia Hawke (a name I use regularly for female characters)

Krestan Trevelyan (a bastardization of Christian, a name I use often)

DAO:

City Elf S/S: Arya for my favorite little bad-a** from GoT

Human Noble S/S: Isabeau from the film "Ladyhawke"...also the name of my first cat lol

Dalish Elf DW: Tedron for my boy kitty Teddy

Dwarven commoner: Jaskela...discovered I had been mispronouncing a co-workers last name, but it worked for her

Elf mage: Ariadne...greek mythology, Dionysus' lover

Dalish Elf S/S: Landro...I was struggling for a name, big Billy Dee Williams fan lol

DA2:

Mage: Rory don't know why it just seemed to fit his black hair/green eyes combo

2H: River after a dear friend of mine

DAI (so far):

HN DW: Matteo...love the name, made him yummy especially for Dorian

Elf Mage:  Remanna...again, struggling for a name, had some herbs I was giving my cat - rhemannia - went with the last name well

Qunari 2H:  Asaara...I thought I was being so clever, but apparently she will be one of many named for the wind...destined for Sera

Elf Archer:  Ianto, named for Solas' voice actor's character from Torchwood, he will have red hair for IB lol

These are just my favorites - I played DAO & DA2 too many times to count, and I mean to completion.  I was never able to finish a Dwarven male for some reason in DAO.  I intend to rectify that in DAI.  :)

My Lavellan's named Delphine, because even though I spent a huge amount of time creating her in CC, when the time came to give her a name, I was like "Fµck this ****, I wanna play now" and gave her my name to get it over with. Besides, I self-insert as hell, so it was fitting.

I usually name my main characters Nimh like my username. This time I went with an Iseri Travelyan for my first run, but it really had to grow on me as it's a newer name on my 'list'.

I tend to pick names based on sound, can't really say what I look for. Usually it's a short (one to two syllable name), I seem to favor the letters 'M' and 'N'. I'm really particular about names and it takes up a lot my time when creating a character :P Hell, took me ages just to name my cat.

Iseri Travelyan, female mage

Neve Lavellan, female archer

Issey Adaar, female warrior/mage (not sure, I have both)

Recently started DA:O (first time) and named my female mage Misa Surana.
