Hide Helmet During Conversation?

A VERY poor design decision on Bioware's part not to have a helmet toggle. You are stuck either running around helmetless in combat situations (lame) or having conversation options with your characters face covered in a helmet (while the others around are helmetless). The game seems very good in so many ways, I cannot believe the screwed up something as basic as this. A big step backward from ME1. I am beginning to wonder if they let the success of ME1 go to their heads and decided in ME2 to get funky and cutting edgy instead of just giving us a good solid upgrade from ME1

I find this thread quite funny actually, i remember there being threads of the exact opposite on the dragonage forums, people where angry that their helmets did go away during dialogue and cutscenes :P

Thats because the main character didn't talk.....

Options for toggleable effects are a godsend, makes everyone happy.

It's annoying because bioware did a pretty good job on facial animations this time(lol staredowns). The cinematic immersion they were going for in the dialog is completely ruined when you can't even see the emotion on your character's face. I find it ironic there's a helmet in the game that gives a conversation negotiation bonus yet it completely covers your face and slightly masks your voice.

I for one am very upset about this. Whu would you do this? I don't even want to wear the terminus armor due to the fact I cant remove the helmet. I mean come on. Really guys? Why would you not allow this in a very highly conversational game. Its just stupid. Patch it up please.

Come on Little Paw that's not really fair to say. It is an idea at least, but since so many conversations take place (many often referring directly to recognition of shepard's face) in combat missions where no option is given to change out of your helmeted armor it simply does not solve the problem.

I was shocked to see the previous thread concerning this topic get locked down for "personal attacks". I read the entire thread from first to last post and saw that everyone was being both civil and mature. I think it was done to try and quell dissent.

Staying on topic, I really wish I hadn't pre-ordered the CE to get the armors, because now I don't even use them. The Terminus armor is great, but having it (and the other 2) block out my face ruins the immersion factor.

Without seeing my character's eyes, facial expressions and emotive responses I can't enjoy the dialog.

...and that's half the game right there.

Just wanted to mention that they obviously DID think about it somewhat, considering the Terminus armor's helmet blinks with your speech, and the voice is changed, as if you are speaking through a speaker in the helmet. (which I kinda like, personally)

...granted, the mentions of people recognizing you in the armor (which you never could have worn in ME1)while you are wearing the helmet are kind of annoying. The overall effect is still cool, though.

Same here I admit it got testy in the first thread but everyone got the message and toned down. I think they patch it BW is good with their fans.

I completely understand Bio's argument on the Collector's armor... but what about normal helmets? or the Dragon's?

Any mod or dev response on this would be great.

Be sure to not give him a helmet then even on the N7 armor it sticks with what ever choice you give him for that mission. So your stuck with the visor or nothing IIRC.

This seems like the largest issue to me. The at-will toggle should never have been removed. They did right by letting us choose the design of the helmets and the option to wear the face mask outside of environmental hazards, but they went one step too far by restricting when you can take it off at the same time. In fact, it would have mattered less if the old system of not being able to choose full-faced helmets outside of special environments actually WAS in place, but now that the toggle is more needed than before, it's gone. It's like watching a dog trying to catch its own tail :P I suppose we can hope something is done about this, but I kind of doubt it. Not sure just how much it will bother me once I get to play it though, but either way it seems like a trade in options that has more drawbacks than benefits. Of course, only Nothing is perfect.

I completely agree that for me the greatest part of Mass Effect is the conversations and character interaction, and it is not worth it for me to damage that by having Shepard covered head to toe and unrecognizable in conversation. Unless this is fixed I will be unlikely to use the promotional armor much if at all, which is too bad because they look badass. That said, I do just plan to use the N7 armor (Still very cool looking even if the stats dont nearly match up) and throw a partial mask or visor on Shepard so I can can fully immerse myself and still go into battle with a helmet or something that looks like it would be useful in a fight.

Even if we could take armor off or switch it would be an improvement. Then we could save before convo and change armor so we could see the face.

Just incase my topic gets locked.

*sigh*

I wondering if any BW employee played Mass Effect 2 with these DLC armors. I mean they had to feel it takes away from the experience. Blinking lights cannot make up for facial animations it just can't.

Question since nothing will be done is it even possible to do something similar to what Dragon Age had? Even that would be better than what is in place. I understand these armors wont be used all game but how many people bought this game with these kind of incentives?

Don't worry, the mod makers will fix it Majpain. Trust me. I know a few pretty darn good ones.

They fixed Bioware's broken low resolution wooden textures in DA:O, they'll fix this too. It's no biggie.

Sadly I don't have the PC version. I get my copy of ME2 on Friday.

I don't think it gets changed after what Christina said.

On the consoles? No.

On PC? Yes.

Modders can do *anything* given time. Atari locked out the ability to mod ToEE...yet CO8 and Livonya modded the ever loving heck out of that game. Even made a SEQUEL using the stripped-down engine.

Nothing on the PC is unmoddable.

Nothing.

Yeah, I was rather excited to use my Blood Dragon and Terminus armors...

...but not at the expense of the story. Kissing through the helmet, drinking through the helmet, being recognized through the helmet... Mass Effect THRIVES on immersion, and that sucks me straight out. So no DLC armors for me if this is the case. Which is a shame, 'cause the armor DOES look good and does assist nicely.

Not using any of the custom armor I have unlocked. Very disappointing. Worse yet it seems even with the normal armor you have to choose to be stuck with no helmet all the time and lose out on a bonus from that helmet as a result, or be stuck with it always on. It's mind boggling how a company like BioWare that got it right in Mass Effect and Dragon Age can screw it up so badly in such a highly anticipated sequel. Well, it wasn't entirely right in Mass Effect as there should have been an option and a keybinding for taking it on and off but it was a heck of a lot closer than this is!

As a developer I hope whoever is responsible for this blunder realizes it and I sincerely hope BioWare is taking steps to correct this ASAP. It's such a simple little thing that is an absolute immersion killer in a game where immersion is king.

ME thinks these armors don't really fit well with the game. Are the N7 armors the same with the helmets? I know you can at least customize it but if it blocks your face do you have the same problem?

They are. I personally enjoy the helmets. Especially how the voice is covered. Though, I do wish that we could toggle the helmet on the collector armor off. But I'm not complaining.

One of the N7 default helmets has an open moth area and a visor over the eyes, which is nice...but if you want the best of both worlds do what I did and buy the Visor from the Elcor's shop on Omega. It gives you a 10% bonus to headshot damage and lets you have a bit of "helment" without blocing your face.

Looks pretty cool too.

I love the look of the DLC armors but just like a lot of other people, I enjoy more looking at the face of my character during conversations. I hope some kind of fix will arrive but for the meantime this won't stop me from playing.
