Even that would be clunky as hell though. The best solution is simply linking the function that opens the armor customization to a main menu item. Not ideal but better than having to use "stations" littered all over the place. Some of the design decisions in this game just boggle the mind.

lol ye, to Biowares credit, if they reading, ;) hope they don't get some people wrong in thinking that people will always find something to complain about, most people think what they've done with the fact that you can customise armor and that each piece can be individual now as well all the host of improvements to the game are absolutely great =], it's just this one aspect is a bit 'strange' in regards to the way it was  designed, it doesn't seem like it was thought through properly, altho maybe it was...and this is the decision :blush:

Potential solution: If designed from the beginning, would be to go one step further than DA:O and make the helmet actually come off during conversations for armors i.e. it disappears off your face and like lies behind Shepard's neck/upper back still attached to the suit - something to that effect. That way you don't need to toggle anything and every-time a conversation begins the problems are solved in not being able to see Shepard's face, and when the conversation ends you're back into combat mode :)

Honestly, there are multiple solutions they could implement. What really bothers me is that they didn't seem interested in even pursuing them. Christina Norman even said she knew about this before release and let it go through which just shocks me that she couldn't see the problem with how immersion breaking it is. To have huge helmets being worn in a game where you spend half of it in conversations is just yeah....seems like an obvious "We shouldnt do that, no one can see their character!" thing to me.

I was pretty upset when I first noticed it too. I've had to completely give up all three of my DLC armors and go with the basic helmetless option. It blows. Maybe they'll fix it, or someone will be able to mod it out on the PC.

I wish, the first thing I looked at doing before posting here was how to change it myself.  The answer, not possible because they locked out basically every type of modding you could want to do.  I can't even enable the console.  About all I've been able to do is change a few keybindings.

If they won't do it, at least let us do it.

so pretty much the PC got a 360 port? this is rather ridiculous especially compared to how we were treated with Dragon Age

wtf can't we open the console? if people want to cheat so be it, it's a single player game

As I posted in another thread. ( That i've now lost track of - or was it this one? )

A solution to the customisable N7 helmet toggle could be that when the toggle is toggled, the helmet instantly goes tiny and is hidden inside Shepards head. That way we're technically still wearing the armour but we can't see it.

you should use the special armor for combat situations. and when you're just walking around switch to something else

That would be great--if I didn't have to go back to the Normandy, take the elevator to the first level, go into the Captain's cabin and swap out my armor every time I wanted to do that.  ;)

I find this thread quite funny actually, i remember there being threads of the exact opposite on the dragonage forums, people where angry that their helmets did go away during dialogue and cutscenes :P

Thats cause sometimes it was better NOT to see their faces... many wierd facial glitches that were best hidden.

It didn't help that your character was a Zen master with a vow of silence.

From Christina Normans Post

"...but after talking with the lead character artist I understood the armors were implemented as a single piece for a variety of technical and art reasons."

As a programmer myself, I understand totally. The "if" statement needed would totally take too much time.

if (player.DoesNotWantHelmet)
    RenderSuitWithoutHelmetForCutscene(Armortype player.usersarmor) //Pass in current armor type

I would probably need another if statement after the cutscene to put the helmet back on.

//before cutscene ends
if (!player.HelmetIsOn)
    RenderArmor(Armortype player.usersarmor);

This is one thing that really disappointed me. I was looking forward to running with the Terminus armor, or the Blood Dragon armor, or the Collector's armor, at the start of the game when these armor's would still probably be useful. But, I'm also hugely attached to my character and the face I've created for her - so to have to obscure that for a large portion of the game just to wear some armor really takes you out of the moment.

So it's helmet-less N7 armor for me, until they get it sorted out. Luckily the N7 armor and its variations don't look bad, and I like that I can color it myself - but it still makes me wish they would change this. I'd love this game a lot more if I could keep my helmet for combat, but toggle it off for conversation.

The helmet thing really bugged me in Mass Effect 1 too, and as such, I had it toggled off the entire game. But you didn't lose out on potential stat boosts for doing so in that game. :-\\

Amazing game, huge improvement over the original, etc., etc.

BUUUT....Really missing the on-the-fly helmet toggle from Mass Effect 1.

Seeing as not got the game I am just making assumptions from videos/streams I've seen but doesn't the 'helmet' in ME2 have its own individual stats?

Remind me, did the ME helmet have its own individual stat? No.... thus the above statement you have made is irrelevant.

You want the helmet stats without the helmet? Sorry but that goes against logic.

The only reason y I like keeping the helmet on during cutscense is to alter his voice. With my character model the voice doesn't match and makes him seem like a douchebag, so the helmet alters it to sound a little more manly. But that's with the collector's armor that I recieved.

Yeah, I'm not convinced by their artistic reasoning either. What good is a work of art when people don't even want to put on their character because it conflicts with the game immersion?

Further adding to that, what good is it when it potentially affects the other parts of the narrative? All of that work with the characters to convey emotion, dramatic effect and etc is all ruined by some artist giving you buckethead and calling it a worthwhile DLC reward.

This is what I said earlier, for Bioware to go to all the trouble of designing the DLC armour and N7 head pieces and then to not have the helmets so you can togle them on and off, just means that they wasted their time creating them in first place as a lot of people won't bother with them.

My opinion is that armor looks fantastic, can provide some nice stat boosts, and it's a harmless freebie.

I even understand that making them one-piece sets was an intentional decision.

I just believe that decision was the WRONG decision. And it happens sometimes. Not all ideas can be slam-dunk winners, and I certainly won't burn them at the stakes for experimenting around and changing proven formulas. It was an oversight with good intentions but flawed execution.

because of this, I haven't been using the armors I was so excited about. Oh well. Not like the armors are absolutely required... and I like customizing the other ones a lot.

I am disappointed with this issue. I love the game, but they dropped the ball here. IF the armor was develloped as one piece and they knew it could or would not change, they should have altered the dialogue. It is beyond ridiculous that key moments in the game become laughable due to this design decision. "Shepard, is that you?" when I look like an alien lifeform is just plain silly. Silly enough to force people to avoid using the armor that they were looking forward to. It is a big enough issue to make people (like me) not want to buy the Collector's Edition or pre-order in the future. I would have still bought the game, likely even the CE, but I just would have not pre-ordered. It just seems like a big oversight despite them saying they knew about it beforehand. To me, that is worse than them saying it was a bug. If they knew beforehand, I would have liked to know that I would not want to use the armor in the game.

lol he didn't say that at all...he said that in ME1, if he wanted to play the whole game being able to see Shepard's face, then he could do that without losing a bonus to stats because the helmets gave no bonus to stats in ME1 - so he could have them toggled off without losing stats.

He wants to be able to see Shepard's face with emotions, reactions and facial expressions in ME2 while still being able to keep the stats for the helmet - which is perfectly understandable since a large portion of the game is cinematic dialog cutscenes, with Bioware putting in a LOT of effort in facial animations and expressions.

A perfect solution to this was for Bioware to design armor in such a way that helmets come off during conversations, and are still attached in some way to your armor, and then they come back on after the conversation. In this way you would not lose the stats (because its still attached to armor) and you would be able to see Shepard's face during the cinematic dialog scenes ;)

You are out of luck with the dragon and pre order armors, the helmets dont come off. However, i cant say anything about normal helmets.

I think we can all agree that this is right about unacceptable. This proves that all the pre-order type of marketing crap is indeed crap the developers didn't put any loving into. I was looking forward to the dragon armor, but if I can't take my helmet off I simply don't want to wear it. I'm proud of my Shepard's badass face.:

I already posted this in one other topic, but for those who missed out on his awesomeness...
