So, I've recently decided to continue my playthrough of the 'Inquisition' after I dropped it after the Mythal Temple.

The reason I stopped playing was because the game just grew increasingly repetitive and boring on me. Not sure why, but the world just felt empty and lifeless. There are so many areas to explore (too many, IMHO), yet the grinding is always the same: scout, establish camps, kill X amount of mobs, "light a candle"/'collect X hides or resources" (I'm an Inquisitor for God's sake, on my shoulders lies the future of Thedas and you send me on this meaningless quests?? whyyyy? what do I have my army-minions for?) which completely broke immersion for me and left mw with a bad taste of laziness coupled with a huge amount of MMO-like nature. So, i got bored (for the first time in my life) with a Bioware RPG game, which I hate to admit.

Anyway, back to the topic, the other major issue gameplay-wise I noticed after firing up the game again was that the areas seemed completely dull and lacked character (apart from the visuals, those are stunning!), because the background music specific to the area was next to none! Okay, that's a lie, after an hour or so of complete silence, I heard a 10-seconds cut... and silence again. Wanna talk about what made Skyrim's atmosphere and immersion great? PROPER BACKGROUND MUSIC when exploring the world. 2-3 themes is not enough for a game of this scale, c'mon!

So far, compared to the other DA games, nothing beats the masterpiece that was Dragon Age: Origins.

The more I play, the more I just keep finding things that break the immersion for me.

The game is just kinda... boring :(

Shame.

That may be a bug? I know for me there were occasionally a few minutes here and there of silence, but I almost always had music playing in the background while I ran around doing whatever.

Maybe. I'm playing on PS3 and have the game fired up on the background while browsing the forums, and not a single tune played in the 30-minutes window that I'm here.

Ah that sucks :( I don't know exactly how many tracks they have slated for background music, but I never had any silent stretches for that length of time.

I miss Inon Zur. His (background) music gave so much atmosphere (not atmospheric/ambient music, but atmosphere). His tracks like Party Camp and the Dalish Elves Encampment and Elves at the Mercy of Men, I'll take any day over the endless repetitive percussion of Skyhold or the about 4 brass-chords you hear in the Hinterlands. It's grand shame.

And don't get me started on comparing the Main Themes (one is gorgeous, one Is standard "epic" boringness)

I have no understanding for that they kicked Inon Zur out, who was the sound of the series, and went with Trevor Morris instead. And apparently asked him to recreate his Tudors soundtrack for a lot of it. Now I like the Tudors' soundtrack.. but for the Tudors. Not for Dragon Age. For Dragon Age I want brooding Inon Zur. Not awash-with-pro-tools-reverb Trevor Morris. Cutscenes may have some decent music, but it all reminds me of things Morris has done before. Which mostly sounds very un-Dragon Agey.

Ah well. Maybe they'll go back to Inon Zur next time.

If you're gonna change the composer of your fantasy game, there's only one right answer anyway: Soule.

Personally, I wouldn't say that the soundtrack is bad. I enjoyed the main theme and the Skyhold cinematic music.
But it's the tavern songs that I'm completely in love with!
Empress of Fire in the reign of Lion... damn stuck in my head :)

i agree with some of the OP's comments. Grinding is increasingly annoying.

Hinterlands and Forbidden Oasis kind of mess up the rhythm early into the game, for me at least. The grinding  is too long before you trigger "In your heart.."

After it becomes a lot more fun but loses wind toward the final quest. And i never ever bother with the riddles ... Myst was 15 years ago guys , no need to revive it.

The soundtracks are fine most of the time. They translate the atmosphere of each map pretty well ..ok, Exalted planes humming gets on my nerves after 15 minutes but it's the only one i can't stand . And the track when fighting dragons is great .

I also noticed occasional hiccups in the audio, when suddenly music stops for no reason, only to pick up again after a minute or so. But this is minor.

The soundtrack is pretty great, but the game is too quiet 90% of the time. Previous BioWare games did it right. I also don't like the fact there's no combat music during regular enemy encounters... *sigh* so much quietness.

Agreed. Trevor Morris' work isn't bad (I really like his work on Vikings), and there are some good tracks in Inquisition (though I must be the only one who isn't a fan of the tavern songs, particularly the Warden one), but the lack of atmospheric music really hurts the immersion. With Bethesada's open-world games, there's always some awesome music playing in the background that enhances the experience; here, the absence is notable and disengaging.

Yeah, so they got Trevor Morris to compose this fantastic soundtrack, and then they thought it would be a good idea to hardly ever use the music because, you know....it creates atmosphere not having music.

Yes (hard to believe I know), this was an explanation given by one of the devs.

They actually thought that less is more as far as music goes...

The Bioware devs have lost the plot on so many levels with this game, it's not even funny....or is it? I guess it is kind of hilarious, coming from a game developer calling themselves "veterans".

They actually said that? I have no tears left...others I would cry again. The little I hear the soundtrack I really like it...but the moments when I get to listen the music are far and between.

What the hell is wrong with BioWare?

And what if it is? I've payed a full price for this game and been a devoted fan of the Bioware games since Baldur's Gate first came out. Do I not get to say my impressions of the experience?

But then again, when there are so many people unsatisfied with the product, there must be a grain of truth to it and not just some school-boys whining, don't you think?

The way I understood it, they meant that they wanted to focus more on the sounds of nature... much like in real life when you go into a forest, you don't have any music playing in the "backround" only nature's music.

But I agree, it was not the wisest design decisions. As others pointed out, Skyrim's atmosphere was BOOSTED a lot by that music. Different music at day and night, at dawn,at dusk, in the caves etc. So every inch of the experience was covered.

They gave bg music the same 'random' treatment they gave the banter. It... didn't really work.

I remember - a tweet? A blog? Interview, podcast.. I can't remember... saying that the music was deliberately supposed to be sparse, to enhance the environment instead of the music just looping forever until it was repetitive. By their own admission they probably didn't make it quite frequent enough.

I agree the music frequency is annoying. I end up listening to my own instead through a player - then when they DO start music, I get clash. If I turn the in-game music off, then cutscenes instead become... weird. Really highlights how much work the music does in putting you in the correct emotional state - it gets removed and suddenly everyone looks like dolls on a stage: "Now kiss!"

EDIT: I will say this though. I like the fact that there wasn't constant combat music. The only game I've EVER like combat music for was Borderlands 2. Even Skyrim and Fallout 3/NV couldn't cut it - got mods to cut that **** out so I can enjoy exploring music without sudden

DUH

DUH-DUH

DUHDUHDUHDUHDUDUUUUUH

...letting me know enemies are nearby (more fun as a surprise! Makes dungeons scarier). No music is good if all you hear is the first 30sec over and over again.

Yeah the lack of music really bothers me. The music that is there is amazing but it cuts out in like ... 5 seconds. Exalted Plains is the worst. It's so beautiful visually but all you hear is a low hum. This coupled with the sporadic banter (which is now completely gone in the Western Approach for me after the patch btw. Even with the Cheat Engine banter trigger I can't trigger banter there) really makes everything feel empty.

Every Dragon Age has zero BGM.
