I'm new to Dragon Age Inquisition having played Dragon Age Origins, Dragon Age 2 and all the assorted add-ons years ago.

I remember, vaguely, spending a great deal of time using tactical mode but I just don't seem to be able to get into DAI's tactical camera mode; it seems rather underpowered. Unless I'm doing something wrong (and the in-game tutorials are fairly basic) I only seem able to issue a single command per character (if I move a character to a position and then select an attack option, the attack option replaces the move). I'd assumed that I'd be able to queue a variety of actions and waypoints for each character and let this run before having to dip into tactical mode again, but this just doesn't seem to be happening; jumping in and out of tactical mode with a single action in-between is a bit of drag to be honest.

Am I doing something wrong or is it meant to work this way? I'd also appreciate any pointers to tutorials for tactical camera mode in case I'm missing anything.

Unfortunately this game was developed for console first, so many options were "streamlined" to make them viable on the console. Another example is only 8 hotbar slots, due to the limited number of inputs on a controller. On PC number of inputs is not a problem, but the UI for the console was used, so the PC version is limited due to the consoles' limitations.

And so this bleeds over into tactical cam and tactics. Companion tactics now only have 4 variables for behaviour, and how abilities are used is limited to on, off, preferred. You cannot string together detailed behaviour commands to make your companions fight intelligently anymore.

As for the tactical cam, there is only one command at a time, and those commands only stick in combat. You cannot set your team up before combat by giving them move orders, as they will return to you as soon as you start to move. The hold command only works some of the time. It also seems that when you try to run away, the disengage command needs to be pressed continually until you are out of combat or the team keeps peeling off to return to the fight.

So it is very much a shadow of the way it was in the previous games, and it is meant to work this way. I don't have any tips as I gave up on using it and just play DAI as an action game, but some people play the game in this mode so hopefully they have some tips on how to effectively fight and play in the tac cam.

Thanks for the reply; Tactical cam does feel disappointingly dumbed down. I'm using an Xbox controller on the PC as it feels easier than the mouse/keyboard combo. and I still think that queuing command is perfectly viable; it's a shame really.
