As someone who used to pay to play on Xbox Live, I can only look at this and feel vindicated about my decision to leave it behind a couple years ago. Back then, I was concerned about whether or not that money was really going towards keeping the servers up and running, or instead going straight into MS's pockets.

The justification for this fee has always been the former, and that is that it is necessary to keep Xbox Live going in it's current state. But we now know that is not true since Gold will be available on PC free of charge and will no doubt work just as well (maybe even better) than Xbox Live on the console with the release of Windows 10.

So, I feel that these people are justified in being upset over this... revelation. I just can't believe it took one of the Microsoft's own people to spill the beans before people would even start to question whether paying for this service is really necessary at all. Are console gamers really that blind to what's happening in the PC space? One has to wonder what else Microsoft could potentially get away with when their fan base seems utterly oblivious to anything going on outside of the Xbox bubble.

I really think they are just trying to promote their product windows 10. Unless you had windows 10. Do they charge PC users. I think people are under the false misunderstanding that all PC users get it for free when its just a small limited bunch. You couldn't get me to go on windows 10 even with that promotion though.

The title of the thread is "Xbox Gold Free on PC" when its really "Xbox Gold Free on PC Windows 10" honestly I don't see it as that big of a deal.

It is when they are giving it away for free.

I heard about this. Are you certain that its for free. I thought I read somewhere. Its free for one year then you have to pay or did I misunderstand it. I forgot where I read that. In any case. I'm not going be upgrading to windows 10. Windows 7 works just fine.

This just in: PC players can play multiplayer online for free. And... And I'm being told that this has been the case since literally forever.

In other news, water is wet. More at 11.

Really. Nobody should be even acknowledging this as a legitimate headline. Barring subscription-based MMOs, PC players have always enjoyed the ability to play a game online without needing to pay first (aside from buying the game, I mean). If they own the game, they can play it. It's been this way since the dawn of the universe.

Yes, I am certain. Microsoft has been very upfront about this. Also, I would argue that promoting Xbox Live as PC service is a more of a negative than a positive for Microsoft. The very thought of having to use Xbox Live on PC to play Microsoft exclusive games only serves to make PC gamers angry. They would much rather the games be distributed through Steam instead of having to download yet another publishers client.

Ya it's just the market on PC is different... in that there actually is one.

On the XBox console you only have Live with no competition, so they can charge for the service since they control the whole thing.

On the PC there are so many different services it can make your head spin.

 -Steam, Origin, UPlay

-GOG and there soon to be Galaxy with crossplay

 -Game publishers/Developers own servers

 -Fan/Private Servers

 -Peer-to-peer online games

and all of these are, for the most part, free.

If Microsoft charged people for usage of XBox Live on the PC with so many free alternatives you might as well slap GFWL 2.0 on it and call it a day.

I would prefer DRM free over Steam like GOG as there you can get your money back if there is a problem with the game.

Was it really necessary to be insulting to Xbox console players? Could you not have made the point without the pettiness?

None of this is really surprising, as Microsoft knows that Xbox players don't have much of a choice. If you don't pay for XBL then you don't play games online on the Xbox.

PC however is a more open platform. If they tried to charge us, we'd just collectively laugh at them before going back to using Steam or GoG. In all honesty there's a good chance that'll happen anyway regardless of it costing money or not. Going up against Steam is not an easy thing to do on PC.

It's understandable that people are upset, but I also don't see Microsoft changing it unfortunately. They're making way too much money from charging Xbox players for XBL, and most people will probably continue to pay for it.

Meh, as long as that XBox Live thing in Windows 10 is not mandatory to play some Microsoft titles, it can go wipe my arse with all the interest I don't have for it. And if it's mandatory, let's just say that future M$ game titles would have to be really, really good to balance out against that inconvenience. Because I am smelling GFWL 2.0 ...

And I'm pretty sure that IF Microsoft wanted to charge PC players for such a thing, the uproar would make those console users go shrink in terror. PC multiplayer gaming has always been free. If they tried charging for it, you can bet Windows 10 or at least the XBox Live component of it would get cracked faster than you could say "oh snap". Needlessly to say, whoever likely considered to charge for that stuff (and I have no illusion that they did consider it) probably got a mouthful from the guys over at the common sense department about what the PC gaming community response would be.

But it's a nice thing the console community finally gets the hint about paying for online features being BS. I mean, they already pay for the internet, and then extra just so that console can/will use it? Hopefully for them (and by proxy us), this stirs up enough to change the online service market/monopoly for the consoles.

Well, I'm still part of that fan base since I do still use my Xbox 360 as a Silver member. So, I'm not some "PC master race" type that's condemning console players. It was a genuine question since a lot of them seem really out of touch with what's going on outside Xbox.

You know how people try say what thing is superior. Xbox One. PS4 or PC. Its not exactly a real war.
