As someone who used to pay to play on Xbox Live, I can only look at this and feel vindicated about my decision to leave it behind a couple years ago. Back then, I was concerned about whether or not that money was really going towards keeping the servers up and running, or instead going straight into MS's pockets.
The justification for this fee has always been the former, and that is that it is necessary to keep Xbox Live going in it's current state. But we now know that is not true since Gold will be available on PC free of charge and will no doubt work just as well (maybe even better) than Xbox Live on the console with the release of Windows 10.
So, I feel that these people are justified in being upset over this... revelation. I just can't believe it took one of the Microsoft's own people to spill the beans before people would even start to question whether paying for this service is really necessary at all. Are console gamers really that blind to what's happening in the PC space? One has to wonder what else Microsoft could potentially get away with when their fan base seems utterly oblivious to anything going on outside of the Xbox bubble.
