Firstly, please no spoilers! Yes I have held out this long. I like to wait out the prices on games and ME3 is looking to be in the right range.

So give it to me straight. I loved the first two games. I've heard the ending is an insult to ME fans for whatever reason but I guess that will just come with the territory. Is everything else about the game worth playing? Or did EA's touch ruin this franchise like Simcity? What are the plusses and minuses compared to ME2? Again no spoilers please!

ME3 is the best in the franchise when it comes to combat... fast paced and hardcore action fun.

The Citadel DLC is an emotional farewell to all your squad-mates in 2 and 3 so it is a must.

What I hate about it? the stupid journal does not update your quests so you are stuck running around in the Citadel trying to find which is which.

About the ending? it is somewhat changed by the Extended cut at-least better than the original still it leaves you wanting for more... which is why we are discussing heavily about the future of Mass Effect 4.

I say go for it.

Believe me, I openly criticize Bioware where it is due - but after all this time, I still consider the vanilla ME3 game to be 90% awesome. After all dlc is installed, including From Ashes, Leviathan, Omega, Citadel, and the Extended Cut it is 99% awesome. That last 1% is the remaining ending. I dont even really mind the last mission like many people do.

The thing that sucks is that everyone knows it could have been perfect. The ways to fix it are simple and obvious enough. What bothered me is not the game, but how Bioware initially addressed the ending backlash.

Still, its an awesome game. I like ME1 and 2 better, but its like deciding between sex with a supermodel and sex with two at once. Clearly the latter is superior, but its not like the former isn't mind bogglingling awesome.

At least, I would assume as much.

That's ...not a good way to handle the Citadel sidequests. The sensible way is to ignore the journal and work from the map. Everyone you need to talk to shows on the Citadel map, and there's no case I can think of where the order you hit them in matters. And with missions showing on the galaxy map, you really don't need to ever look at the journal.

Just pointing this out for Nuke's sake, since I presume he's going to do the smart thing and play the game.

Mass Effect 3 is a very inconsistent game in terms of quality. At times the game is simply amazing and other times is just cringe worthy. Regardless, ME3 rounds off a lot of the character arcs from the previous games (Liara, Tali, Garrus, etc.) in a really great way.

In terms of DLC, I would say "Leviathan" and "From Ashes" are quite essential to the story. Both fill in some narrative gaps in the game. Unlike Omega or Citadel DLC, which is not at all relevant and carries a much different tone compared to the rest.

That said, I wouldn't recommend Mass Effect 3 unless you liked the first and second Mass Effect.

If the interactive dialogue and the feeling that Shepard was your character was the defining pull in they two games in your opinion, then you're not gonna like ME3. Shepard is mostly on autopilot, lots of forced emotion, lesser dialogue options, more linearity, overall worse writing IMHO.

But there are still great moments. To me ME3 was the biggest disappointment in my gaming life ever and to others it's the best game ever made except for the final 10 minutes. I think about 50% of ME3 was pretty mediocre.

Yeah I noticed that too... near the end of the game...

If you're gonna get it, it requires you to get the DLCs that come with it. ME2's DLCs were optional. ME3's DLCs fix mistakes.

ME3 has by far the worst ending of the three games, but I'd still rank it is as the best game in the trilogy. I thought 90% of the game was great and up until the endings I had more fun playing it than the other two. It also is by far the most emotional chapter in the series.

I'd recommend giving it a try at least and forming your own decision on it. I'd also recommend getting the Extended Cut (free), From Ashes, Leviathan, and Citadel DLCs. The Extended Cut improves the endings, Leviathan is right up there with LotSB as one of the best story-based DLCs that Bioware has done, From Ashes adds a  f--k ton of lore on the Reapers and previous cycles (as does Leviathan for that matter) and one of the best companion characters in the series, and the Citadel adds a fun combat arena, opens up a new area of the Citadel and an apartment for Shepard, and lots of additional content for the companion characters. The main mission isn't as interesting as Leviathan, but it never ceases to be fun.

The Omega DLC can be skipped. It feels a lot less essential than the others from a story or character-development perspective and more action-based than the other DLCs. Only get if you absolutely want every DLC or are a huge Aria fan. Otherwise I'd suggest watching a Let's Play first and seeing if its for you.

Definitely get the DLCs if you do get it.  I love ME 3 and have defended it like hell and often angrily on these boards to the point where I almost got permabanned but obviously not everyone cared for it.  The DLCs I would consider a must would be From Ashes, Leviathan, and the Extended Cut.  Omega is alright, and Citadel is a ton of fun but not necessary.

Combat's the area where ME3 improves upon what came before.

The minuses as i saw them before meeting the trainwreck ending were the intro, the small ME1 biased squad, generally weak cameos for ME2 cast and the horrendous increase in auto-dialogue which made Shep seem a completely different character to the one i played in first 2 games. I thought it was by far and away the worst of the 3 games but with the use of PC mods i found closure to the story, so if you loved the first 2 games it's probably worth seeing an end even if its poorly done imo. As far as DLC's go i'd suggest from ashes and the EC i suppose as a base. I liked Omega(some nice roleplaying opportunities), liked Citadel(poor plot but great if you are a character fan), hated and wished i hadn't wasted my money on the awful Leviathan.

If you have the money, go for it and all its DLCs (especially Leviathan and Citadel DLC).

You will like or hate the ending depending on your own taste. There are too many different opinions on that anyway. I too have read so many times that the ending is crap, and well, I loved it and 3 other people I personally know also liked it.

Of course you might not like it, but the ending is not the whole game, and the whole game is, for me at least, the best in the trilogy.

On a side note I first played the ending without the Extended Cut and liked it, but EC is a great addition.

Unfortunatley you're going to want to pick up four pieces of DLC that will greatly enhancing your experience with the game. These are: Extended Cut (which is free), From Ashes, Leviathan and Citadel. You will never see these DLC prices decrease, and you will end up paying more for them than the actual game, that's the unfortunate point.

ME3 is not as groundbreaking as the first two, but it is a worthwhile send off - albeit a missed opportunity to have been something truly great. I would say go ahead and play it, there are some fantastic moments in there which remind you that it's still Mass Effect, the gameplay is pretty solid, and the music is still as fantastic as ever. Play it, form your own opinion on it, and take the ending for what it is.

Posting such a question in ME3 section of Bioware official forums might be somewhat unreliable... ;)

On topic, absolutely. Grab all the DLCs alongside it, or, at least, Extended Cut and Leviathan. Then From Ashes, Citadel and Omega, in that order.

If you're willing to spend money to get the DLC, sure. The DLC add a lot to an ME3 playthrough. I'd never want to roll without them.

Compared to ME2:

1. Combat is improved in virtually every respect. Movement feels much smoother and there's a dodge button. The weapons system has been reworked so that classes can equip any weapon but it lowers their power cooldown. Class builds are diverse and the combo system has been enhanced. Weapons can have customized attachments that can change your playstyle.

2. Instead of ME2's vignette-like storytelling, ME3 as a central driving storyline with story side quests sprinkled around them. So for example you'll get to a part in the story when after doing a few story missions leading to it, you'll get a world where there's a main quest but also several side quests you can do that may affect the main quest for that story hub. This happens several times in the game.

3. The ending is underwhelming but knowing that going in helps. With the Extended Cut and Leviathan you probably won't think it's such a big deal.

4. Character cast is smaller but more developed. Give Vega a chance; he's great.

All in all it breaks about even with ME2 for my favorite even though they aren't too similar.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 are a perfect synthesis of RPG to third-person shooter. Mass Effect 3 kind of places more emphasis on the shooter aspect. I like making things explode, but I really miss a lot of the RPG elements.

Regardless, if you are planning to get it, make sure you download the DLC. Without it, the game kind of loses a star.

OK.  I played the series on the 360.  Played ME1 and 2 from the day they were released till the day the next one came out.   ME3 maybe 2 1/2 times.  I now own the series on the PC and I have the MEHEM for it.  The ending was not the only problem I had with the game, but the mod pretty much fixed all of it for me.

I can't say if you will enjoy it or not.  Some do and some don't, but the game itself was fun.  I'd say if you play on the pc get it and if the ending bothers you check out the mods.  If you have the xbox or playstation and can get it for a reasonable cost, pick it up with the dlc.

The citadel dlc was fun. and had a lot of what I enjoyed in 1 and 2.  If it's not expensive you can play it once and see how you like it without feeling bad about paying full price for something you didn't care for.

I think ME3 was the best game in the series. I liked the atmosphere.  It was sad and darker than the previous games. Scanning the planets was more interesting. I think missions were also more interesting. I also liked the ending with EC. My preference of the DLCs are EC, Leviathan, From the Ashes, Omega and Citadel. It's weird that I don't rank Citadel higher because I like to spend time with my companions and that was possible in Citadel but the reason why it's last is that the atmosphere in that DLC was different than in the game and your companions would joke all the time. Like all the time. I didn't like how the MP affect the single player and it felt that Shepard was concerned about his/her teammates even if you didn't want him/her to be concerned.

Yes. ME3 has the best combat in the trilogy (by a long shot) and is also the most emotional chapter, as Han said. I also recommend to buy the DLCs, especially Citadel. As for the endings, I consider it OK with the Extended Cut.

I don't know if you're interested by that, but I add that the multiplayer is very fun.

With all this peer pressure, how could I say no?

Thanks everyone for your input. I was concerned by the initial negativity that came out around the release but I always planned to come back for a look after everything with DLC and patches shook out. Sounds like it is worth a go.

Citadel is a pure fun factor for me, it's so silly at times, but that makes it what it is  :D Loved the character interaction in it, and it's really long, so that's a huge plus too.

Don't hold your breath, themikefest. It'll be quite a while before I get to ME3 as I haven't got my Shep through ME2 yet (having switched to PC after my Xbox was stolen). But I'll add my thoughts in the future as the discussions on this "next mass effect" continue.

Oh yah, it definitely is, if just for the multiplayer aspect.  Never thought that horde mode would be so fun, but it is.
