There's only two times that she can kill someone without your prompting. The Orlesian mage when you first met her and Lord Harmond. In the former case, yes, she kills him when you could of questioned him, but to be fair he was trying to kill at the time and its possible that he would have just fought you and Sera to the death. In the case of Lord Harmond though, you can totally stop her from killing him if your Inquisitor uses the Nobility perk that renders him powerless and allows you take all his lands. Sera's totally fine you taking people alive just as long as you ensure they get punished for their crimes against the little people. You could also just decide to ally with him before Sera really starts to get peeved, which she'll disapprove of but ultimately accept.

lol On my playthrough I had that nobility perk and damn well knew if I investigated more than two questions Sera would flip, yet I always investigate to the maximum and wouldn't meta-game out of it. Sucks for Harmond... and the Inquistion.

Recruit her after you get to Skyhold. Then the Orlesian mage reveals that he's an agent of

Spoiler
. Now you have a slightly crazy rogue who helped you find and eliminate a potential enemy.

Listen to her recruitment speech: You have nobles, you have spies, you have soldiers. But all of these guys can be undone by commoners, like wipers, cooks and cleaners. This guy was done in by a commoner that was insulted by a drunk guy. (I think, that part is a bit hazy), There are probably more like him that can be found by similiar means.

After she joined she offers alot of war table missions which reveal spies, weapons traders and people with riches they want to share with the inquisition. You might not like her, but her contacts are nothing to sneeze at. You also know from the first mission that she's quick to let the arrows fly, so you take a decision instead of questioning people who make her arrow fingers twitchy.

And who knows, maybe you might learn to like her?

I will just answer this, since you provided such a comfortable question:

Does having skill and connections justify being an insane murderer?

To me, yes any day. If a person is willing to contribute to my goals, if they do not wish ill to me in particular, then I could care less about who they are and what they do with their life otherwise. I'll even help them out with their own crap, a favor for a favor.

Agreed.

OP makes it sound like we've never recruited 'insane murderers' in a BW game, when you can actually argue that the majority of companions have that side in them (to varying degrees).

But no, it's all on Sera because Sera.

The ME2 crew was the best: Assassin, thief, a few psychopaths, geth, xenophobes / cerberus operatives, exile, outlaw / merc, prototype krogan brute, alliance deserters.

Sera is barely used by me because she's a dick about elves and a dick about Cole

Im not sure why people dislike Sera for that, she dislikes when elves try & push their beliefs on her but generally doesn't hate her race & she dislikes Cole mostly because he's a creepy mind rapist who repeatedly invades her mind despite her telling him not to, but some people detest her for having those opinions which i find weird

How was what happened Sera's fault and made her a hypocrite? An ambitious noble was hurting people by herding them like they were cattle, among other things. Sera, with her limited power as a commoner, came up with a blood-less method to disrupt it. Rather predictably when you think about it, the noble Harmond lashed out quite violently in response by murdering people. He justifies it as them threatening his power (the usual as Zevran says), and blames Sera for making them a threat. For the corrupt like him, not being ambitious if it gets people killed isn't an option.

And this is why I was glad to seize his lands and title. Part of me would rather he die, but that's not as satisfying as putting him under the Inquisition's thumb indefinitely.

I don't know about the Cole thing since that didn't come up but I don't think my Lavellan ever pushed her 'elfish-ness' on her. If anything it was Sera that brought it up in conversation first and my Lavellan was just defending her heritage, however diluted it may be according to others.

It upsets my Inquisitor when people call her the Herald of Andraste but she doesn't badmouth the religion because it doesn't fit hers, just ignores them.

Not saying she can't have state her opinions, she's welcome to it. Just for people to realize they still come off as offensive.

Judging from the Orlesian mage's monologuing, taking him in alive didn't seem to be a likely option. He was blathering about being your enemy and whatnot.

That's why I suggested it only be an option if you have Cassandra with you.

Well, to be fair, it was justifiable considering the circumstances of the mission. Cerberus hand-picked the craziest bunch they could find.

Perhaps if she was able to disable him, but since he was apparently working for Corypheus, any option would likely have ended in death.

I think it depends tbh, some stuff the Dalish inquisitor can say can be abit insulting towards Sera just cos she doesn't act like a traditional elf

The conversation at Skyhold is a example, when Sera mentions the Maker/Andraste & 1 of the Dalish inquisitor's responses asks her why she doesn't believe in the Creators instead of human gods

I'm sure there probably was an option to ask Sera why she doesn't act like most other elves or why she worships the Maker instead of the Creators (idre) If that's what you're getting at then yeah, maybe she can get upset. Regardless, she doesn't have to kick dirt on the Dalish's beliefs in retaliation. A simple "That's not how I was raised" or "I only believe in the Maker" would suffice.

At least you know she has contacts you could use so it's not as bad as Sten or Zev in DA:O .

She hates it when elves and "push their beliefs on her" but she worse than most with her own.  It not just that she doesn't like people expecting her to believe in the elven stuff. She insults their beliefs and looks down on anyone who follows it.  If your inquisitor is an elf she will call your beliefs "demon worshipping lies" and call you stupid (she only gets point here to make up for that in that if you tell her being stupid has never stopped her opening her mouth before you get an approval from her). If you romance her she will break up with you unless you tell her your beliefs are not important because it's just "not her" when it's not even about about her. It not like you ask her to follow your beliefs or come live with a dalish clan, she can't accept you don't believe in the maker. If you romance Solas and get the tats removed no matter how high your friendship is with her she will take the opportunity to be a ****** about it and mock you some more. She is, as usual, a hypocrite.

No matter how many times I see the scene, no matter what type of character I'm playing, I just can't seem to justify allowing Sera to join the Inquisition.  I can't help but be reminded of Zevran in DAO whom only once did I allow to live, and that was with my low-down rogue dwarf who saw the potential have having an assassin.  To all my other character the option to let Zevran live shouldn't have even been given.  He should have just been slaughtered like anyone else who attacked me.

And then there's Sera.  Meta-gaming I know she has skills that my group may need, yet ... who in their right mind would really want her to join?  It all starts off with her setting you up in an ambush.  She murders some guy and admits she doesn't even know who he is.  Her friends take the pants, not the weapons, from the guards that attack you next.  She's obviously nuts.  So unless my character is also insane, and I'm asking seriously here, why would you want this person in the Inquisition?  Does having skill and connections justify being an insane murderer?

I'm just trying to realistically role-play here, but hit a brick wall every time I meet her.

Thanks.

It starts with her informing you that someone in Val Royeaux wants to hurt you and telling you to expect trouble. I'd hardly call it an ambush considering an ambush requires being taken by surprise, which you were clearly not. You knew full well that trouble could happen. The notes informed you that your actions within the city were being watched

That guy she "murdered" made no secret of wanting to attack you. In fact, he did attack you. So I'd say it was more coming to our rescue then anything (not that we couldn't have killed him ourselves).

And her friends didn't take the pants. She did. Because she found it funny. I did as well, and yeah it would've made more sense for her to take the weapons but under the circumstances I don't really care that much.

Her skills with a bow plus her connections make her a valuable asset to an organization hoping to help the world. If you don't help the little people too, then what good are you?

Besides, better to have her as an ally then risk being considered another target and having resources wasted trying to deal with it.

Aww, but seriously, though, who's better is always debatable. I have my favorite and you have yours, and to each his own. :)

Still, I can see why some people like Sera, and why some people hate her. Lukas wasn't joking when he says Sera is to love or to hate character.

I'm 99% sure a writer (hers?) said she was like a female Alistair. Might have been in her bio. And I definitely agree, they're very different, which is why I was so confused and let down.

She's intense, to say the least, but I wouldn't compare her to Zevran, who literally was hired to kill you and will attempt to again if you haven't gained his trust. Sera, for the most part, is someone I found surprisingly refreshing, both as a character and as a romance - her's remains my overall fav, and she's not even my fav character. I think she can be polarizing and grating otherwise. She's completely zany and uneven yet unapologetic about it. I don't think her being violent and brutally killing some obnoxious guy who literally had just tried to murder you or her reckless behavior necessarily qualifies her as being insane. Perhaps aggressive and confrontational, but definitely not insane.
