I'm playing Mass Effect on XBox 360. At this point, in order to get all the achievements, I'm working on my 3rd playthrough. In a row. ME is a good game, but it's starting to wear on me. That being said, I really want 2 saves going into ME2. I want one with Liara romanced, and one with no romance. My question is, at what point is her romance flag flipped? What I'd like to do is play the game working towards her romance, and then just before she's set as "romanced" behind the scenes, make a copy of my save set (to another thumb drive or whatever), and finish the game. Then, I can load up the copy I made and finish it WITHOUT finishing the romance, thus saving me the work of having to play through a FIFTH time.

Help?

In your second conversation with her she will ask if you and Kaidan/Ashely have something going on. Regardless of what you say, she then asks if you feel something special for her. If you are pursuing a romance with Ashly/Kaidan and say yes, you feel something for her, then eventually they will both confront you in the comm/debriefing room and ask you to choose one or the other. If you are not pursuing a romance with Ashley/Kaidan and you do not wish to romance Liara, then pick the middle option "I just want to be friends" or something to that effect. Also, to ensure you do not have a romance with Ashley/Kaidan hit you unexpectedly, leave the one of the opposite gender behind on Virmire, Ashley if you are a male Shepard, Kaidan if you are a female Shepard.

Okay, I'm PRETTY sure I've got this...

Firstly, bear in mind you cannot romance Liara if you do Therum last. There just isn't time. Liara must be acquired as one of your first three hub missions.

Secondly, bear in mind that the latest time you have to lock in a romance is when you go to the Normandy's Galaxy Map after you have completed the fourth hub mission. This is the cut-off point by which you have to have established a romance.

The actual triggering conversation for Liara's romance is when you talk to her in the med-bay/office and say 'let's talk about you' for the SECOND time. And once you say it to her for the first time, you need to do a hub mission before you can say it a second.

So...

1) Play the game and make sure Therum is one of the first three hub missions you do.

2) Talk to Liara and have the 'Let's talk about you' conversation once, but once only.

3) Do all the side missions you care about doing (including those at the Citadel).

4) Do the forth and final hub mission.

5) As soon as the mission is over and you are back on the Normandy, save the game immediately when you are back in control of Shepard (which will be after a pep talk with the crew, a mind-meld with Liara and possibly a chat with the Council). This is your key save!

6) Go and talk to Liara BEFORE you go to the Galaxy Map (which will trigger the Grounded cutscene, at which point it is too late to lock in a romance). Say you want to 'talk about her' for the second time. She will confess an attraction. I think she always ask whether you already have a thing going with Ashley/Kaidan whether or not you actually do, so don't take that as a sign as a sign you are locked into an Ashley/Kaidan romance.

7a) When you want to do a Liara romance, when she asks if you are interested in Ashley/Kaidan, say 'It's not serious', and then when she asks if you're interested in her, say "I am attracted to you."

7b) When you want to do a no-romance, when she asks if you are interested in Ashley/Kaidan, say "Ash/Kaidan is special" (this is NOT sufficient to lock you into an Ashley/Kaidan romance), and then when she asks you if you're interested in her, say "I just want to be friends."

It's possible there are other paths through the conversation trees that will give the same results, but these are the ones which I know work. Plus I think I remember people saying certain responses in Liara's romance were a little buggy as to whether she's locked in or not.

You'll know whether you are locked into a romance when the Normandy is grounded. Udina grounds you in the Council Chamber. The following cutscene shows Shepard by the lockers on the Normandy when Joker comes over the intercom and announces Anderson wants to see you. If Shep is in a romance, his/her partner is comforting them and Joker interrupts an almost-kiss. If s/he has no romance, Shepard is alone.

From this point on, all you will need to do twice is the encounter on the Citadel when you get grounded, Ilos, and the battle of the Citadel.

I know this is an old topic but I am curious about something. I wanted to make a playthrough of a ladiesman Shepard who wants both Ash and asari but ends up with Liara. I am grounded on the Citadel now. I've been pursuing both after Therum (which I did after Feros) and yet there was no scene of them making you chose between them. Where did I screw up? It looks like Ash is going to be my end-game because she was the one comforting me after the council meeting. Unless I have the last conversation with Liara about her being a virgin (which looks like locks you in with her). I brought both of them into Flux and both of them didn't have a problem dancing with Shepard (if that's an indication about their feelings). Is there a chance that I will get that scene before Ilos? I'm confused.

If you play both at the same time Ashley will be jealous and will refer to Liara in one of your talks. Did you have that yet?

My uneducated guess is that you probably missed the opportunity because you did Feros first. I did the same as you with my current Shepard and I got their confrontation after completing Noveria and Feros, but I did Therum before both of those.

Since there is a new scene with everyone after each major mission, I assume you missed this new talk for Liara because you completed Feros without her.

I haven't missed a single talk. It doesn't matter that I didn't do Therum first because I did a lot of assignments and after 3 or 4 of those squadmates have new topics to talk about. So I completed everyone's story before going to a 3rd planet (Noveria in my case). And yes, I did have a jealous Ash dialogue. I even had one about waiting her and requisitioning some cold showers. I don't know why, but suddenly after Virmire it looks like Liara doesn't like me anymore although I didn't do anything to set her off. For some reason the game chose Ashley for me.

Here's the thing: the game tracks how you interact with different characters, using a "flag count" scheme. At a certain point in the game, it will count the flags to see who's in the lead.

Whomever that is becomes your primary 'love interest'. So if you're choosing between, say, Ashley and Liara, if Ashley has a higher 'flag count' than Liara, Ashley will be the LI *even if* you are pursuing Liara primarily. The game will stop counting 'non LI' flags at that point so you can only advance with the LI the game has chosen based on your conversation choices.

I guess I advanced with Ashley too much before catfight could happen and that's why I didn't get the chance to chose between the two.
