The viewership grew at such a rate that it was multiplying on a yearly basis for a few years straight, and the growth is still quite good. CS:GO at katowice viewership went almost as high as one million viewers over the four days of the event. This growth surged at around the time that valve started pushing lots of cash into promotion and prize pools, and it's something I barely have payed any attention to over the years but I suppose valve has some long term plans to advertise steambox and the like during these competitive events.
Just my theory though, I have nothing to indicate that I'm correct, but I think it makes good sense for valve to try and get a big twitch.tv viewership that they can advertise to.
