I have just been to all 3 locations where the evidence is meant to be of Fairbanks' nobility but I can't seem to find anything. I have put on the active quest marker and there is an area marked purple but so far as I can tell there is nothing there. Is this one of those really difficult ones where if you search only a millimetre out you miss it? Help please, thank you.

Are you using the search function? If you are using it, then you should get the search pinging sound and should be able to follow that gold area that lights up the most, to get to each clue.

There is no gold area that lights up. I try using the search function but without the gold ring already prompting you to use it, you get nothing. All I get is a round purple ring on the map to indicate I am in the general area but beyond that nothing. Should I assume it is bugged? To be honest this is the first time I remembered to talk to that woman; on previous runs I had assumed it would just be another routine fetch quest until I saw the Tapestry and the fact that you could discover his nobility. I checked the Wiki and so went to talk to Clara. Honestly I wouldn't be that bothered if it wasn't for the fact that it is noted in the Tapestry, so I assume it could be important. May be I did the quest out of order and that has bugged it. I haven't got a recent permanent save, so I can't go back to an earlier point without losing a fair bit of game play.

I guess it is bugged for you. I never had any trouble pinging those clues...it works the same as finding the warden info and helping Blackwall. I like getting to complete the quest because it allows you to chose Fairbank's future but it really doesn't change the game much at all...one choice might give you a war table mission...not sure because I never picked the choice that is supposed to do that.
