Game does not save. Using both the quick save and normal save registars that it saved the game.
However, if you try to load a saved game. No careers or saves are listed. Indeed after exiting the game the only option is to start a new career.

I've started over 3 times now all using a sucessfully imported ME1 Career. That inports in fine and lets me play as long as I want (4 hours lost the first night thinking saves where working). No loads are possible or continuations.

No, I am not a fool and only trying to save during combat. I learned that from ME1. The game reports saved success.

Just bacause I'm desperate to play my game I looked into the GameSettings.ini file.

The below looks wrong to me:

[SaveGames]
Location=D:\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Save

Shoulding that line be pointing to the ME2 save directory?
Something like this?

[SaveGames]
Location=D:\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save

I'll start another game and see if saves work trying that change.

The above is a screen of what I'm getting when looking at the Load Screen after making several saves both quick save and normal.

Please help.

Trying a different import, or starting a new character. Nothing makes a difference.

They had this same bloody problem with ME1. As I recall it's caused by something like not having your My Documents folder on the same drive as your game installation. Unfortunately I can't recall what the solution for that bug was and can't seem to find it atm.

But really Bioware, is it so much to ask that you fix known bugs between bloody games? This is completely asinine.

Running Windows 7 with My Documents on C, with Mass Effect 2 on D.

Could it just be not having your My Documents folder in the standard location?

Ah ha. I knew it was the same issue. Refer to this thread for the solution. I can at least vouch for it working on XP.

And yet, if you have Dragon Age installed on the exact same system, it doesn't have this problem.  Seems to me they just recycled the old code and didn't bother to fix it.

To be more clear. Saves seem to be working. At least they are now.

LOAD is what seems to be broken.
When I save the other saves list.

Load does not show any careers or save games.

I have successfully continued playing from a save using the Resume from the main menu.

I read the thread and tried chaning the folders to not be read only.
Why would ME2 have trouble working with the directory that it created?

I'm having the exact same problem. It's weird that it found the correct directory and created the saves, but then doesn't seem to want to recognise them.

Gah! I'll post to Offical Tech Support.

But all they ever do is make me fill out a long form and then 2 weeks later send an email directing me to a unrelated FAQ and a comment on my system.

Some comment like, "Sir your reported GPU of ATI 5870, is not on our list of tested and approved GPUs. It most likely is too old and weak to play ME2. This is probably why your save games are not working."

Haha, so true.
I tried it again logged in to a guest account to see any difference between default My Docs location and another drive. Seems it forgets to create some folders (empty) and a Profile file (which I think keeps your EA account details - explaining why I had to keep logging in each time I start-up).
I'll have a deeper dig when I have more time (busy with work and moving house just now).

I was actually refering to KevSteele's post just a little ways down the page. It seems that when your My Documents directs to a root drive instead of a directory within the drive that ME can't create certain folders within the \\Bioware\\Mass Effect dirctory. Notably the Profile folder and the ones it creates for new characters. It still creates the game saves, they just get stored aimlessly under \\Mass Effect 2\\Save instead of under the \\[char name]_XX_[profession name]_XXXXX folder they're supposed to go to. So the game can't associate any of your saves with a given character.

Here's what I did step-by-step.

1. Created a folder named "My Documents" under C: (I'm personally using XP, I believe for Vista you would need to name it just "Documents" and I don't know about Windows 7)

2. Redirected the "My Documents" link under the start button to the new directory. Without moving any of the old files over.

3. Started ME, logged into the EA network, and started the game.

4. As soon as all those bloody unskipable cut scenes were over, saved the game.

5. Redirected "My Documents" back to its orignal position, again without moving anything.

6. Copied and pasted the C:\\My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect 2 folder whole cloth into the \\Bioware folder I had in my original My Docs drive.

I suspect that if I ever want to make another new character I'll have to do the whole dance over again.

That's more or less the plan I had to try out tonight. Except instead of temporarily redirecting My Documents, I was going to log in to my PC under a guest account which has My Documents in the default location.
If it works, that'll be a confirm for Vista users.

This is very frustrating - especially for Windows 7. There are so many "My Documents" options I've forgotten how I configured it the way it is. But I did install Mass Effect 1 and can save fine with it. But Mass Effect 2 seems less informed.

Based off of Attic Lion's guidance I got loads working properly.

Still a very lame bug in ME2. Worked on same computer for ME1.

Thank you, Attic Lion, I finally got everything working after having the same problem.

Luckily, I didn't have to restart yet again. I took my half-working saves (Ones I used via the save feature and resume, when load was broken) and replaced the files in the new profile folder, and presto, it worked.

I'm not sure if another character would require it to be done all over again, but if nothing else, one could just place the saves into the old folder (Although the career data wouldn't be accurate).

Anyone found a solution for Windows 7?

ME2 saves the save game files at "BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\Save" but the game doesn't see them when you select Load from the game menu and New Game is all you can select at start-up.

I heard this problem still appears in ME3. Is this true?
