I am having trouble with this boss fight. Nightmare hasn't been that difficult until now.

I am a level 15 rogue with Dual Daggers.

I have with me:

Cassandra - Weapon/shield & Templar

Blackwall - Weapon/shield & Champion

Solas - Winter & Rift Mage

I have with me 8 healing potions (after the supply cache before the fight), but no grenades left (those damn pride demons sucked)

I have the strategy guide and it said that the nightmare was immune to spirit based attacks so I didn't want to bring Dorian who is my main spirit mage... however now that I am in the fight it says the boss has a spirit vulnerability -_-

I just want to know a solid strategy for this fight. I seem to get to the "second round" and cant even survive passed that because of the spiders or the nightmare's main attack that drains your health.

I struggle with having to ALWAYS stop with the tactical camera and order a party member to do a certain attack. I understand it adds to the difficulty and strategy of the game but to me I just want to be able to know that the AI can handle it self and I don't have to stop every 2 seconds to give a new order and I can concentrate on keeping my character alive.

any advice and help would be greatly appreciated. I do NOT want to knock down the difficulty.

Thanks

What's your rogue's specialization?

As far as general advice, ignore the Nightmare entirely whenever he summons adds. The adds are much deadlier and are easier to kill, so focus them down first. The only exception to this rule is if you had brought 2-3 rogues. In that case, just lay waste to him as quickly as possible, and mop up adds after he falls over dead. Also, you'll want to make use of the pillars to avoid spiders' ranged attacks. If I'm remembering correctly, you can also stay very close to the pillars to avoid terrors' burrow attacks.

The only really damaging attack the Nightmare has is a DoT spell he'll every so often drop on one of your party members. When you see the status effect appear in your tray, or if one of your party members is suddenly hemorrhaging HP for no obvious reason, you'll want to use a dispel or spell purge as soon as humanly possible.

Arvaarad makes good points. I ran around killing those stupid spiders while ordering my teammates to focus on the Aspect. Whenever there was a gap between the adds, I'd join in. On my rogue PT, I went with assassin, so a nice, if cheap, way of dropping his health was to save up mark of death and hidden blades just for him (preferably from stealth at close range to maximise the number of hits that crit).

I'd simply add that you may want to keep mark of the rift on your bar for this fight, just for the bit where the two terror demons pop up together. Drop the mark on them and waste them while they're stuck, and then proceed to murderise the Aspect.

trying to run around killing all the spiders, but 1) they just keep spawning and 2) I don't know whats up but even when I am in stealth and attack I barely do anything to them and cant kill them quickly enough. Cassandras Purge ability doesn't regenerate fast enough to use it before the uses another DoT attack and I cant move then quick enough off the mark before it gets Cassandra and blackwall.

Ive tried saving my Mark of the Rift for the terrors too. I got to that part mainly because the nightmare rushed my tank and he hit the side of the wall dealing 30k of damage and immediately sent in the terrors after 5 minutes of fighting. I hit both terrors with the Mark of the Rift and it did a decent amount of damage to them but while running low on potions it was hard to get away from them.

I turned it off for the night. getting a bit frustrated that I cant even beat this...yet it seems so easy from what everyone says.

1) Which specialisation did you choose?
2) What daggers are you using? Did you craft them?

I found that the spiders died quickly enough if I attacked them out of stealth, and from behind for flanking bonus. You may sometimes get aggro while attacking them, even with Easy to Miss (passive), but flank attack can help to mitigate that, and will helpfully restealth you if you have the upgrade.

Also, have you given Solas dispel? It's pretty useful in general, and running with that and spell purge on Cass might help when one is on cooldown.

Edit: sometimes taking a break and coming back can help. The first time I encountered the Ancient Rock Wraith in DA2, he kicked my butt and I had to turn down the difficulty. The next day, I retried on nightmare and beat him. :)

Is there a way to restart a quest? I didn't create a separate save file. I have a feeling that is the only way.

I play NM only and never use tac-cam. My experience is that pause/unpause is better if you really need time to think.

Anyway, focus adds first always. I think he spawns them at certain time or health intervals.

You can do this. The fight really does become much more manageable if you use the pillars, you'd be shocked. Just have your party hold behind a pillar, and wait for the adds to come to you.

Multiple ranged adds is what creates most of the difficulty. The only power the Nightmare has is the dispellable DoT and a decent chunk of HP. Aside from his adds, he's easily one of the least threatening bosses.

And when you stand behind a pillar, you take away the adds' ability to snipe at you or burrow. At that point, you can just kill them to death.

Yeah dude, don't give up yet!

On top of what's already been mentioned, since you have 2 tanks, maybe try to get Cass to aggro the boss. I'm not sure how his aggro management works, IIRC sometimes he just targets people randomly no matter who's wailing on him, but in general a few hits from Cass should get his attention. Then kite him behind a pillar with her. When the adds come round the pillar, use war cry on Blackwall to get their attention and keep the heat off Cass if possible. Since your party is grouped together, no matter who the Aspect targets with his DoT, Dispel and spell purge will clear it.

Also, you could try changing companion behaviour to stop them using health pots, and manually use them to stop wastage, you'll be surprised how far 8 pots can go.

Thanks for all of the advice everyone, I used every bit of it. Finally beat him a couple minutes ago. Took a lot of patience and a bit of luck. Saving the mark of the rift for the terror demons was huge and between "rounds" I just went around reviving everyone so they could deal some damage before they died (changed the companion usage of healing pots to manual).Near the end I struck a bit of luck when Hawke and Stroud were both attacking the nightmare and ignoring the spiders. I then sat behind pillars, picked off all but one spider with the stealth/hidden blade combo and was careful to not have the nightmare spot me. eventually sat and let hawke and stroud pick away at the nightmare while I carefully and sparingly did a hidden blade attack. I was down to 1 healing pot and didn't want to revive anyone as to draw the attention of the demon in the corner. Took FOREVER this way...but hey its finally done.

Thanks again!

I got late to this one, but for future fights make sure you craft good daggers. Those spiders really shouldn't have taken so much time to die from the attacks of a DW rogue. Also, I don't think you ever really need 2 tanks in this game, you might want to consider replacing one of them with an archer next time, for more DPS.

I agree with Alan. There is no reason to bring two tanks.  The best defense is a better offense.  Make sure your companions' gear is adequate and comparable to your own.

A timely application of bees are the solution to most problems in this game. ;)

I am playing a dual dagger rogue in my current run, but haven't gotten to that section yet.  However, I have already picked up a tier 3 dual blade schematic (hissing wastes maybe, I forgot exactly where it was).  As others said above, crafted daggers (well, crafting anything in general) will make your life a lot easier.  I stacked chance to cast hidden blades (one was 4 hits, one was 3).

But I am too late to this party anyway since you already beat it.
